It would have been very great and epic if Ironhide actually metaphorically gave Sentinel Prime a taste of his own medicine by killing him instead even by using Sentinel Prime’s own Cosmic Rust Cannon against him. This can be like it is a What If called “What if Ironhide killed Sentinel Prime?” Besides, Ironhide is too valuable. And can you imagine what would happen next when Optimus Prime arrives and how Ironhide killing Sentinel Prime would affect the rest of the events that follow.
This is just my opinion. But what if it be when in this scene, Bee could save Ironhide at the nick of time and then Sentinel left with Ironhide and Bee are both safe. And in the final battle, Sentinel shoot the Cosmic Rust Cannon at Sideswipe and leave Sideswipe to dead. Ironhide was pissed by it. So he tried to chased Sentinel in order to kill him. Then in the Primes war scene, Ironhide was the one who receive the stab from Sentinel in order to help Optimus not be slash down an arm. Then in the end of the battle. Optimus killed off Megatron and then used his Ion Blaster Cannon to shoot at Sentinel. And Ironhide asked Optimus to turn the favor back at Sentinel by his Cosmic Rust Cannon. After it, Ironhide said: This is for Sideswipe. I think it's gonna be much better right?

Ironhide's death in the movie is SHOCKING. The first time I saw the movie in theaters, I NEARLY CRIED when I saw Ironhide's head come off.
