I like how this video uses statements like "And generally consent to its disclosure" and "There are some exceptions, but the general rule..." to dance around the fact that FERPA no longer REQUIRES parental consent in most situations, even for private "research" purposes.

FERPA is related directly to the CEC and NASET standard of ethics for special educators by collecting data, records, and emails from parents.
The characteristics and behaviors that will make me stand out as a teacher are to always get parental consent first. It is very to keep our students' information confidential. There are a lot of rules and regulation to go by, but it is very important to keep families information confidential. These rules include IEP’s and family history.

Ok, the U.S Department Of Education, hear me out. What if, you can change the U.S Education system, and make School here better? Look, students nowadays are depressed with the amount of homework, stress, and anxiety they’re having. With all due respect, I know back in the day, times were different, but still...nothing has changed. Here, let’s take a look at a good example.
A phone from 100 years ago, now that’s a IPhone. A car from 100 years ago, now it’s...ok it’s still a car, but now it comes in all different colors and such, and a school from 100 years ago...yup, nothing has changed. Students go to school for one reason, not because to learn, because it’s law. Besides, most of the stuff you “learn” in school, you gonna forget about it. I mean look at Finland, they’re having a great time, because the person who runs the education their actually CARE for the students and not just want money. Also, teachers here should earn just as much as doctors. Instead of focusing on the death of Shakespeare, let’s focus on collaboration.
Get rid of those simple tests, because here’s the kicker, tests don’t determine who we are, our strength and abilities do. Even if you fail a test, you aren’t a failure. You don’t need to learn about rocks if you wanna be a chief one day. Also, do you not care for the students thinking about suicide because of school? Do you? Or do you just want money and nothing more? School needs to actually PREPARE students for the future, because lemme tell ya, learning about rocks ain’t gonna do it. Let’s teach students the basics, like how to pay taxes, how to survive out in the wild, etc. It’s sad that channels like The Weather Channel teaches people how to survive in the weather rather than learning the slope of a formula.
Also, HAVE YOU NOT SEEN THE SCHOOL SHOOTINGS?! Open your eyes! Students are dying! See, it’s obvious you don’t care for students, you just want money. You say that “Ugh, video games are causing those school shootings.” ...well no. Do you possibly think that if I play Mario, I’m gonna shoot up a school? Here’s what actually cause school shootings: Depression, having no friends, anxiety, being abused, etc. See, this is why we should focus on COLLABORATION! Because one day, when you realize those students go to school, they ain’t coming back home.
So The U.S Department Of Education, let’s change. Let’s change the whole education system here in the U.S.A and make it better. Let’s put smile on students faces, let’s make teachers earn a decent wage, let’s get rid of those tests, let’s ACTUALLY prepare students for the future, and most importantly, let’s just let kids...be kids.
    I rest my case.

Please correct your video to elaborate on the whole "private unless parents give consent, with some exceptions." These exceptions state that for any reason deemed useful for ed studies (read: google, microsoft, any corporation, any testing company, and behavioral analysis company) the school can, will, and does share PII info without consent, and with no recourse in most cases for a parent to opt out of this "sharing." This kind of deceptive talk and half truths are what's making sure we the people do not trust, and should eliminate, the dept of ed.

It's impossible for a school to use computers and other digital services without providing information to the third party which provides those services, which could be something as simple as, "here's a list of students and employees who can use your service." However, the 3rd party company has to be held to a higher standard when the data is protected under FERPA than they would otherwise. For example, Microsoft has taken steps to honor FERPA. www.microsoft.com/en-us/TrustCenter/Compliance/FERPA Asking schools to manage their digital assets by themselves would be like asking them to build their own desks and chairs, and write and publish their own textbooks: it's a lot of work, and very expensive.

I really wish ferpa and ppra would just be clear about when parents rights cease to exist.. one little line saying “at 18 these rights transfer to the student” .. a very simplistic statement … so really the ‘f’ disappears and a parents rights to access the kids grades and performance completely disappear.
I think this, for a family is extremely divisive. They should have a path for a parent to become included in the adult child’s decisions. The only path currently is one where the child shares the account logins and setup, up front. This is great and I hope for your family’s sake it’s possible but it’s not exactly intellectually honest. Am I wrong here?
