[AC] ドギューン!! / Dogyuun - 1-ALL Clear

  • Just a simple 1-ALL.
Dogyuun came out in 1992 in the arcades and is one of the lesser talked about Toaplan games.
The art and music in this game is super out of control, they went full out in that department. Unfortunately they skimped out on other aspects, namely the gameplay and the scoring. It also has several game-breaking bugs.
In terms of design, it reminds me a lot of Tatsujin Ou but not quite as long and with much less anal recoveries after death.
The system of the game is fairly unique. You don't have bombs or speed options in the traditional sense, but instead you can pick up 'modules' that give you special properties.
Speed-up Module - If you hold the B button, you move at 3x normal speed. It also gives you two options that block bullets. The options shoot tiny lasers if you are equipped with the blue weapon.
Bomb Module - Gives you a one-time-use bomb. Very powerful, can one-shot most midbosses.
The game has four different weapons.
Blue - Forward laser. Autofire helps to make this thing keep firing.
Orange - Homing lasers. Easily the best shot in the game, makes quick work of everything without having to aim. It also gets more powerful with autofire.
Green - Penalty weapon. Don't ever pick this up.
Purple - Similar to orange but way worse. Mostly useful for the stage 3 and 5 boss.
The homing shots are good but also somewhat unreliable. Since they don't always move in the direction that you want them to move.
You only get two extends in this game. Though there is a secret, probably unintended, extend. If you use the tractor beam to carry the 1-up after the stage 4 boss all the way to the start of stage 5, you can make the boxes collide with each other and spawn two extends.
This is pretty hard to do though, since you lose the box if anything hits it. Losing it isn't a big deal though, since the 1-up box will still spawn at the beginning of stage 5 if you missed it.
I almost carried it to the boss but I dropped it right before it like an idiot.
The game is actually quite hard. The rank gets very high very quickly and bullets become lightning fast. Luckily a death lowers the rank significantly for quite a while.
Mame defaults to the Europe version of the game, but this version is waaaay easier. The rank never gets very high in that version.
There is a bug with the stage 7 boss where the game can softlock if you hold the shot button and keep shooting the boss. Tap when the boss only has a sliver of health left.
The game is also supposed to loop forever, but duo to a bug, the game corrupts and hardlocks after loop 4.
Scoring is busted since bosses don't time out. You can milk forever during the stage 4 boss in a spot where he can't hit you.

    Weapon info:
Mega Shot -- Starting weapon. Strong central shot, but very minimal coverage. Most of the game can be cleared with this weapon. Tapping faster or using autofire can make this weapon a little stronger.
Psycho Beam -- Swirling homing weapon. Lots of coverage, but only two beams can be on screen at a time. A pleasant weapon to use, but the power can seem lacking at times. Tapping faster or using autofire make no difference.
V-Laser -- Shoots a laser in the shape of a V. Center is left exposed, but there is decent side coverage. Helpful for some bosses and certain enemy configurations. Tapping or autofire prevent this weapon from working.
Homing Fire -- Shoots two pairs of homing lasers that travel in straight lines and right angles. Tapping or autofire will result in both volleys leaving quicker, but no help beyond that.

Thanks for this run, Jaimers!! It's one of my favorite Toaplan games, personally.
I remember how people were extatic when Ketsui was out, and were impressed by the fact that there was almost no break between stages, but it was already a Toaplan tradition (Dogyuun, Tatsujin Ou/Truxton II, ...etc).

The whole game was initially supposed to be a mech-based overhead action/fighting game, but the prototype apparently did poorly during location testing so the concept was scrapped and Dogyuun was swiftly remolded into a shoot-em-up, not particularly surprising, considering Toaplan's history. This little segment is all that remains of the original game gameplay-wise, but I think quite a few of the bosses (and definitely the title screen) probably made the transition more or less unscathed, seeing how many of them are giant humanoid robots.

It seems like this game's name must be a Japanese onomatopoeia, making it a sort of predecessor to (do)donpachi, but I can't figure out exactly what it's supposed to mean.
The "do" is probably the same as in dodonpachi, that is, the sound of a gun firing. "Gyuun", on the other hand, is the sound of something being squeezed. What does that have to do with the game I have no idea.
