    We surprised our Korean exchange student friends with K-pop’s first ever Filipino line! *Are you excited for Elisia, Gehlee Dangca, and Jin Hyeon-ju’s debut together with the other girls of UNIS?* 💜

      100% Agree with you. IMO most of the time it’s the parents’ fault. My 30s housemate who’s Vietnamese American went to Vietnam to learn his roots bec he had an identity crisis living in America trying so hard to fit in and his parents did the same. When the society rejects ur culture u usually try to adapt hence u focus on fitting in. I can’t blame her. People should not judge so hard on mixed people. They just try to survive and if we look back on some issues how Koreans actually discriminate Filipinos/SEA people we should understand why it took her long to accept her identity. Let’s encourage her to embrace her roots, for sure many can actually relate to her and maybe in the future it won’t be so hard for the mixed babies.

      @@yumeesc Well said!
      I'm sure Hyeonju's mom is happy that Hyeonju got this opportunity to embrace her other culture, as she seemed to have involved Hyeonju in various Filipino activities/festivities when she was much younger. But as an idol who had to move to Seoul at a young age to pursue her dreams (far away from her family on the opposite side of South Korea), the chances to visit the Philippines stopped short. And as a public figure, she must have been cautious about what to reveal about herself.

    One thing I notice is that Filipinos have VERY diverse looks, more than Koreans who seem homogenous. But Koreans think we only have this one set of look (brown skin, flat nose) that's why they get so surprised. I don't know if that's a good thing or not, lol, because they can't fathom us being pure (full) and looking like that. The fact that they're all super surprised is a bit concerning actually. Like how do they even see us?

    • @elsplanet
      @elsplanet  Před 3 měsíci +46

      You have to keep in mind that one thing that increased the shock factor in this video is that I never told them anything about the girls’ origins before the reveal towards the middle of the video. However there is also a reason why they see us that way. I lived abroad most of my life (In the Middle East, and USA specifically), and I have been to Korea as well. To tell you the truth, we Filipinos (Specifically OFWs) do have a certain look. It’s not like these stereotypes didn’t exist for a reason. In fact Filipino-Americans seem to be pushing this narrative of what a stereotypical Filipino looks like as well. So I really I have a feeling that it has to do with what a majority of Filipinos look like at a specific place. In the Philippines, we are bombarded by (1) halfies and mixed-raced Filipinos on media (Specifically mestizos/mestizas), and it is very common to find (2) Filipino-Chinese people (Chinitos/Chinitas) here as well which is why it’s easier for us to know how diverse we are. But to tell you the truth, it is more common to see brown-skinned Filipinos abroad. If you don’t fit this, it’s very common to hear “you don’t look Filipino” anywhere in the world. There’s a socio-economic reason for this and I wouldn’t get too deep into it. But just know that there’s a reason why we do videos like this on my channel. It’s to introduce people to our culture, and (like we did through this video) break stereotypes ☺️🫶🏼 As always, spread the love and God bless! -EL 💜

      koreans actually have p diverse looks but the people they deem good looking are much fewer than what's normal because of absurd beauty standards. you would find a person that should be considered very pretty elsewhere but koreans won't look that person's way for some reason.

    • @qwertyboo
      @qwertyboo Před 3 měsíci +15

      @@elsplanet Even discounting the actual halfies/Wasians/Chinoys, I think we're pretty diverse. Elisia and Gehlee are proof of this. In before someone says "but they are outliers!", I do not think Gehlee has an outlier look at all. I think you would not be hard pressed to find someone who looks like her in a common high school setting.
      I honestly think most Filipinos look mixed and ambiguous which is why thinking we all look like, say, Melai Cantiveros is just an insular approach. Maybe some people will disagree and that's okay.

      That's why it's so funny when foreigners say, "They don't look like Filipinos". Well, what does a Filipino look like anyway 😭 There's no "one" specific Filipino look. People in the Philippines have a wide range of looks. It's not homogenous like Korea. There's a reason why there's 3 beauty standards in the Philippines: Moreno (tan/brown skin), Chinito (East Asian features) and Mestizo (Caucasian features).

      Yeah, that's interesting since the Unicorns from Universe ticket also focused on Gehlee's dance. and a lot of filipinos were annoyed

    some claimed that Gehlee and Elisia (not only in this video) looked mixed not bragging but as am exposed to tons of people from all walks of life. . .you can really see diversty of faces not just inside a government school in the PH but everywhere . . beach, market, buses, malls even your neighbors . . morena, chinita at mestiza meron at meron talaga kahit saang sulok pa ng pinas kahit isla pa yan, may bata talaga na maputi u maganda kahit na kayumanggi kahit na ung mga magulang ay purong pinoy matangos ang ilong . . good thing EL's planet got this nice intro video for UNIS because few months ago, I watched a video about Ppop at parang di masyadong okay ung pag present ng Hori7on correct me if am wrong . . FYI lang Elisia is a cousin of Marcus (bunso ng Hori7on) and I thank you

    The fact that the 4th Filipino, Aya Natsumi, had a high possibility of debuting too and the judges knew that, so they eliminated her themselves despite doing the best in her group.

    I meet Filipinas this pretty all the time, but you don't see them on TV. For some reason PH media doesn't promote this look. The second two really look PInay, I recognized it right away. The first one didn't surprise me. Korean DNA is very potent. Even 1/4 Koreans look like Koreans.

    filipinos are actually the most talented and prettiest people I've ever seen for real, there isn't something they can't do!! seriously
    (not important)
    edit: I am not from the Philippines!! I have always been intrigued by other cultures and Filipino people (?) really caught my attention when I saw several videos of them effortlessly hitting high notes and then more recently saw that they dance well (innah bee being my fav).. and then when I saw the food they make (like jeanal(?)) and then I also watched a video of miss universe of the year and filipinas won many times!! that's why I commented this
