Following the example of the Woodstock festival, the "Roca Roja" festival was held in Chile. The images are from a live television presentation and also from that festival, as well as other images from Chile in the 70s. Los Jaivas (Hi Bass) are a group that makes Latin American rock-folk music. Still active.

You should probably check out the brothers Los Vásquez from Chile. They sing mostly pop and rancheras (a Mexican type of music). They have beautiful voices and great instrumentation.

You surprised me with this reaction to a band that is already a true musical heritage of Chile 🇨🇱.
They started as a band in 1963, calling themselves 'The High & Bass' (alluding to the difference in height between two of their members. One very tall and the other very short. In Spanish 'alto' refers to a higher magnitude... while than 'bajo' to a lower measurement).
Then they Chileanized their name to 'Los (the) Jaivas' (The jaiva is a crustacean... a type of crab).
(You can pronounce it like: HIGH - BASS).
The drummer in the video (Gabriel Parra) died in a car accident in 1988...
The singer (and guitarist, and flutist) Eduardo 'the cat' Alquinta also died several years ago (2003).
Despite that and the passage of time, this band continues to exist. They recently celebrated 60 years of trajectory.
Their drummer for several years now is the great Juanita Parra, daughter of the drummer in the video...
They are great musicians, and always faithful to their Folk-Rock style, which mixes Andean folklore (from 'Los Andes') and progressive and at times psychedelic rock.

The original name of the band was The High Bass (1963). They change this name as Los Jaivas in 1968. The correct pronuanciaton is like High Bass as sound in spanish. They was founded in Viña del Mar city, Chile. This song title translation is " Look little girl"

Hi Sue! I'm new at the channel and cause of Los Jaivas. they are from Chile and this song is from 1972. They started during the 60's and are still active. Some members passed away like the vocalist "Gato" Alquinta and the drummer Gabriel Parra, but some family members replace them. Parra was a huge drummer recognized internationally. Their style is folk rock and progressive.

This song is about a little girl which lose her dad on a cold night... because they were homeless.. the singer saw this on the newspaper and inspired this song... "for the daughter of a man with crystal eyes and newspaper sealed on skin" the man died, so that's crystal eyes, and homeless people when died on street, they cover them with paper, or newspaper.... and that's the sealed body... sad , but beautiful song for the little girl

Great reaction! Los Jaivas are turning 61 this year, and they are still around and playing! They are an amazing mix of rock, Chilean folk, folk, psychedelic rock, progressive rock , Andean music, classical music, and more. And such a great song "Mira Niñita", an absolutely classic in Chile. if you have the chance to check "La Conquistada" (original version) could be awesome.

Nice to see you reacting to the Jaivas. This band dates back to 1963 to date. Over time they have replaced some of their members who are no longer with us, such as the drummer who was replaced by his daughter and the vocalist, both already deceased. It is a great group from my country. His most important work is titled Heights of Machu Pichu. It is about the musicalization of the poems of the Chilean Novel Prize Pablo Neruda in honor of this great Inca civilization, discovered in the middle of the mountains in Peru. I'm also surprised to see that you have very good musical tastes. I see very good albums behind you, especially that of Electric Light Orchestra of whom I am a fan, I am referring to the great Out Of The Blue Album. A work from start to finish, thanks to the talent of my hero Jeff Lynne and his great band. Greetings from Chile.

I love when people from other places get to know and enjoy Los Jaivas, particularly because their manner of singing and some sounds can be unfamiliar. But that's the interesting part of it. I hope you react to more songs from them. I personally love "La Conquistada" and "Bosques Virginales." I know someone previously said that the name is pronounced like "Los Hi-bass," but that's not quite correct. It's more like "Los Hi-vas," with "vas" pronounced as in the word "canvas."

They are pioneers of a style of music that seeks to rescue "the primitive sound" of the people originating from the South American land (Andean and Chilean) and also of "Latin American folklore" (music that was born from the musical and cultural mix of the Spanish Empire (invading ) with the native peoples (invaded)). All this music played with traditional rock instruments (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, piano, etc.) + indigenous and/or folk musical instruments.
In summary:
Progressive rock + psychedelic rock + native music + folk music + details of classical music (piano especially).
PS: You must "imagine" similarly as if in EEUU a Rock group rescued the music of the Apaches, the Sioux, the Cherokees or the Cheyennes (to name a few) and will play it in the 21st century.

It is a very old band and many of their videos are difficult to find (original version) because their channel is not updated (many of their videos are uploaded from unofficial accounts)
They are difficult to find, that's why I recommended those specific ones.

And yes, the music had an emotional quality to it, even though I didn't know what they were singing about .. But I don't know if I would listen to a lot of this type of thing ..
