10:58 instead of promoting, black can be tricky and play Kh1. Taking the pawn would be stalemate! But there is Rh8#. In some endgames this stalemate is the reason why it's a draw. (when Rh8# isn't possible because it is on f2 and the white king on g3 for example)
Well Rh8 is no mate....white is indeed winning but its way more complex than that
@@saschaderschach-sensei3564 we have Kf2!! Kh2 Rxg2+ and white is winning
Congrats to all the winners! Keep dropping those nice chess videos, Nelson. Love your content!
You might need a bigger vase with more pawns. Being such a low number and being within some obvious boundaries made it too easy. I think it was obviously more than 40 and below 150. I think I guessed 75. But with only 110 rational options you would expect around one out of every one hundred to get it right, more if it was predicted by a bell curve.
Hey dont give the man good advice if it benefits us with giveaways
89 pawns
I say 69
Also, just to mention that in the last position, you can also win by playing Kf7 (1. Kf7 g4 2. Rg8 Kf4 3. Kg6 g3 4. Kh5 Kf3 5. Kh4 g2 6. Kh3 Kf2 7. Rxg2+) or Rg8 (and it's the same idea, but you play Rg8 then Kf7). So there were several ways to win, but once you choose one, the rest of the moves is always forced (if black plays the "best" moves)
nice
How about Rd5?
I'm kinda new to chess and your videos are so helpful and entertaining at the same time! Because of you I was able to climb 200 points in a week! Thanks so much! ❤
Glad to hear it!
Me too, im now in about 2 weeks at 400-300
From 300 to 1298 in 10 months
@@andrewwong6500 from 1000 to 1360 in 2 weeks
@@bolnet632 because I quit chess for 3-5 months then I found this YT channel
You didn't go into why Rd5+ was a drawn position, but what I saw was a forcing line where if the king leaves the f file then I win the pawn, and if black tries to promote to a queen then it's mate. Stockfish told me there are 2 problems with it though. The king can run to the corner when it gets to rank 1 and it's stalemate when I win the pawn (nice tactic for the b and g rank pawns). And they can also promote to a knight.
O…k..?
I appreciate this.
Rd5+ should have been analyzed more! you can get always opposition backwards with white king, but there is unexpected underpromotion on G8 to knight! Or stalemate, check it out with engine, quite cool.
By under-promoting to a knight it creates a root-knight endgame. It's still a win for the rook side.
8:56 I second this! Love those endgame quizz
Just love this channel. I watch your videos as soon as you upload them.
Hey there! Recently discovered your channel, really helpful stuff, thanks a bunch!
The sound quality is so crisp it’s much appreciated 🙏
I'm the chess noob who analyzed this as though the pawn was moving in the other direction. (yeah, just dumb) But now I'll need to check this with stockfish with the board flipped.
I used to do that a lot. Always assume white is going up unless it is explicitly stated otherwise.
It literally said that it was going down in the doc
@@tugs8689 You are so smart. I have so much to learn from you.
@@tedlis517 oh wait I guess you didn't like fill out the form last week. Cause it was stated there but if you just paused during the video then it's understandable
At 7:06 I would not attack the pawn with the rook after that - because the rook separates the king and the pawn with the g file. I'd just keep it there and bring my king closer. If he moves his King too close to the rook, just attack the pawn. If he moves his pawn too far down, just attack the pawn and the king can't save it. For him to move both pieces down would take him a long time.
Stockfish 15 randomly likes many of the moves, including Kf7 which is mate in 23.
lmao i answered this entire quiz with moves for black and was thinking so hard
Hello nelson. The courses are live one on one?
Ah rook and pawn endgames feel like my achilles heel
These quizzes are a ton of fun!
Could we get another rating range? Like 2000+ for example because I think that the 1600 suggest different moves than the 2600 :)
Very few people watch him at 2600 level I would guess only like one or two votes
Good video
Bro does scholars mate every game and always brings his queen out
3:26 you say it's a draw but stockfish shows it's a win for white!
if you do the vase again you should use a king or queen cause even if none were damaged theres a random number
Bring back these weekly series
In position 1 it's possible to move black king near the pawn without moving it. Seems like this case in not covered.
I wanted to see what I did wrong in the last position and there are actually 4 winning moves: Rg8, Rf8, Kd6 and Kf6.
Kf6 is an illegal move in the last position but sure
@@Stefan-xh1hi Kf7
@@trdi Ok, well you wrote Kf6.
the final pawn to his king be like: now who's protecting who huh?
*ROOK TIME*
Why did you stop the quizzes?
Please tell me if i missed something. In Position 3 the Rook starts at D8. ( At the 11:45 mark) you talk about the wrong move. If the Rook starts at D8 then moves to D6.... Doesn't black have to move? i saw you move the rook... however i did not see you move any black pieces. I see you move the Rook from D8 to D6 then not move black then move Rook to F6.... What did i miss? Thanks
It didn't move it was just a different position
what about Rd5?
what about Rb6? does it work?
i wonder how many points of advantage you can be up without a forced mate?
I saw position 2 differently with Rg1+ I saw if the king moves to the right the pawn can never promote, and they they will get trapped in the corner and mated by white
That doesn't always work because there could be stalemate traps.
1:59 it' like "racing kings" on lichess. anyone play that variant?
I wanna ask what was the 1601+ and all that sort of rating
What if the king goes to h5 then rh1 then king g6?
Nonono… at 5:07, play Rh1 then Kxh1 then Kf2 to draw fancily…
10:59 eroc would do kh8 with premove rg7
Lets go!
1:29 can't you skewer the pawn?
But if they use horse, don’t they get the extra move?
No way I forgot the pawn could move two squares in the second position do I have a brain
I was 6 off on the pawns! Just 6! GAH! I wouldn't be so heartbroken if I hadn't been so close 🤣
Hey Nelson, I've been struggling with vigilance in my games. Do you know how I can fix that?
Define vigilance in chess.
@@MrGodofcar observant of mine and my oppents moves, seeing where certain tactics and/or mating patterns apply, overall pattern recognition, etc
@@wnJhntn You need to think for longer. I had the same problem and it can be very easily fixed by just putting more thought into your moves
@@eternxlhaaris5811 okay. Thank you
me a 600 getting the best 1601+ move every time but has never been in a single 1 rook vs 1 pawn endgame xD
Trippy shit Teacher🤯 Thank you for the video ❤♟
Noooo😫😫!! I guessed 83 pawns. I counted the possible pawns around the vase circumference times the height plus some inside and i was between 80-90. I just needed to guess a number from 1 to 10😩. So close but i feel good for my idea being that right
what would be the result if white played rd4 in the last scenario?
The thumbnail is crazy
3:45 But why don't you just move Rook to the bottom rank
at 3:55 couldn't you just move the rook to b1 and bring the knight over they can defend with the king but always have to move said king and we can move the king whenever we want by wasting moves with the rook
Yes, but it's a draw
12:23 what if we tried rook g6 instead?
Kg5 and repeat i guess
@@commanderweeb9949 I'm going to assume you meant Kf5 because Kg5 is illegal. After Kf5, I was thinking that white plays Kf7, but I'm having trouble visualizing/analyzing the line beyond that.
Another option that I've analyzed (mostly) after Rg6 is Kf4 then Kf6. At this point, as far as I could tell, it is a draw, but *if and only if* black pushes the pawn instead of making another king move.
Can't black just move the King left and right or pushes the pawn 1 or 2 times and then only move his King and get a draw?
which position? because wasting time means that white has the time to set things up so black has to move the way white wants (otherwise black loses)
for the first position if black waste time then the white king has time to go in the pawn lane and prevent promotion forever
the other two are already race against the clock
With all the positions i had the top move of 1601+ whats my rating then?
Some ppl had kb7 at the second position😂😂
89 pawns
10:48 if that was a bullet game black could play Kh1 stalemate
Not only in bullet...its somewhat tricky to win
That 2626 move in thumbnail is checkmate
Yeah no sh that’s why it’s highest
when people give their chess elo, is it like on 5 min games, 10 min games, 30 min games ? because i'm a 300 elo on 5 min and 900 elo on 30 min haha
What would happen if I played rd5 at the last position I definitely saw a win there
Oh nevermind
128
Im rated 450 and i saw a 1600+ move lol

Beautiful baby ❤💋😃 Good job Mama!!!
In position 1 why didn't you go rock b1
Becaus the one shown in the video is very simple and it works.
89
Dang, i was 90 pawns off!
Damn i got it right 6 months too late
Damn, I’m guessing 87
Wow i was close. I guessed 94
Rook d4 in last position most obvious... king cut off, no calculation needed, not sure why it's not covered?
Because Nelson already said earlier in the video that cutting off the king only works if the king is on the back three ranks. And if you look carefully, the king is not on the back three ranks.
i guessed 89 lmao but i was too late
Damn I guessed 90
In 11:00 (position 3) what if i play king to h1 rook takes g2 is a draw :)
Kf2
Rh8 is mate in 1.
And if it's on a different file, then the white king can take next move.
Damn 89 pawns i said 92 so close
rook to g 1 check
people who said 88: 🗿
p2 isnt Rb8 winning
Omg I was so close 😩 I said 91 pawns
Every time, I thumbs-up and watch the video, and every time CZcams fails to deliver the next video until I've already missed the next-next week's quiz...
Me getting rg1+ being 200 elo
At 13:30, how does Rd5! not win?
It's Rd5? because it really doesn't. It improves the black king while doesn't improve the rook. What it does, though, is that it makes space for the white king to advance, but it's not quite enough. You could actually try to keep making more space for the white king in a similar fashion and hope that you can mate when black eventually queens. It's a nice plan except that maybe the black doesn't queen... In fact, they have two options. They could get a knight instead of a queen and enter a drawn RvN endgame. Or they might put their king in the corner with a smart stalemate defence. A concrete line can be 1.Rd5+ Kf4 2.Kf6 g4 3.Rd4+ Kf3 4.Kf5 g3 5.Rd3+ Kf2 6.Kf4 g2 7.Rd2+ and now black can choose between 7...Kf1 and 7...Kg1!.
If 7...Kf1 then white plays 8.Kf3 forcing black to play 8...g1=N!. That's a draw if black plays correctly. More recommended is 7...Kg1!. Now no matter whether white plays 8.Kf3 or 8.Kg3 black plays 8...Kh1! and gets the draw immediately. The pawn queens next move unless white captures it 9.Rxg2 with a stalemate.
@@rizka7945 Instead, 3) Rf5+
@@byronwatkins2565 Then 3...Ke3 and there is no chance your king is going to catch the pawn in time. Say 4.Rg5 Kf3 5.Kf5 g3. White might as well sac the rook now to end the game sooner.
Don't play random checks in rook endgames! Most often they just help your opponent.
@@rizka7945 Agreed. Thanks.
Damn I said 84 closeee
Dang I guessed 74 not that far off 😞
Broooo I was 9 pawns off L for me
holy shit i guessed 89 and i even wrote it in the comments
and nelson replied too yay
Rook to b6
i said 92 😭
I said 88 pawns :o my thoughts were i counted the amount of visible pawns, multiplied that number by Pi and concluded around 90, then I was like wait it probably a multiple of 8 so I went to the nearest multiple of 8 so close bouncing between 90 and 88
Waow almost :o
Haha, that makes me happier that I missed by 14 (I guessed 75)
If I had bothered calculating anything and was then unlucky enough to miss by one, it would haunt me and become a whiney story I tell people for a year.
