    Bobby, I've been there with algae plugging my fuel filters. Don't treat with shock products because that will kill the algae and it will continue to float around in your fuel and plug your filters. You need to use an enzyme treatment for diesel. It will digest the algae and clean your entire fuel system. It's the color of windex and was the solution to my ongoing issue. If you have fuel filler ports made of chrome plated zemag (magnesium pot metal) remove them and replace with stainless fill ports because they won't pit in the o-ring sealing area and be helpful in keeping water from intruding past the o-ring. Cheers

    Bobby, Just looking at that fuel coming out of that filter. I suspect that someone in the past has been taking the used diesel engine oil and putting it in that tank. Thats a old practice to save on paying a disposal fee. And technically it works. But this is what you can get if there was to much oil added to the fuel. Because in nearly 40 yrs of working on diesel engines, Unless your generator is pumping its engine oil back into that tank from a return line from a mechanical fuel pump. Ive NEVER seen a mess like that unless it was someone adding old engine to the fuel.

    • @davidslinn5920
      @davidslinn5920 Před 3 lety

      Is it just another place to store used engine oil for disposal some place cheap? Or what would the long term plan be after storing it in that tank?

    • @Pyle81
      @Pyle81 Před 3 lety +3

      @@davidslinn5920 No, the purpose is the burn it in the generator. Diesel engines will run on just about anything from peanut oil to some pretty contaminated fuel. And since disposal fee's today have gotten so out of hand, some people resort to just burning it in there Auxiliary fuel tanks for the generator and even oil fired heaters in colder climates. Im guessing that you may have never seen a "Used engine oil heater" commonly found in large heavy duty commercial truck garages. Because when you have 50 semi trucks on the road 5-6 days a week. At 5-9 gallons of oil per truck. When you change oil every 10-k miles it adds up FAST. So you either pay to have it taken away or you invest in in a recycle burner and benefit from the waste product instead of paying to make it go away. In the marine industry (warmer climate) There's little use for making heat. So its a large cost to pay to make it go away. So some old school practices was to just add it to your fuel and not pay for the fee's. However, then you get this situation of filters that need maintenance and service sooner. So you have to weight the cost. Filters and maintenance cost increases, versus disposal fee's. I could only imagine what it would cost to have 10 + gallons per engine pumped out and then hauled away from inside a marina in a Caribbean area would cost a boat owner. But it wouldn't surprise me if it was at least $300.00 to $500.00 for a complete maintenance of both mains and both Generators. And thats just the disposal fee, not the new oil and filters and labor.

    • @davidslinn5920
      @davidslinn5920 Před 3 lety +1

      @@Pyle81 Thanks for the info. I've never dealt with diesel engines in any capacity, so this is all new to me. So basically you're saying they're "dirtying" up the fuel for the generator, knowing that it will still run on the dirtier fuel, and therefore burn it off into the atmosphere instead of paying to dispose of it. Overtime, however, will lead to Bobby's situation - where all the sludge in the dirty oil has accumulated in the bottom of his tank.

    • @Pyle81
      @Pyle81 Před 3 lety +2

      @@davidslinn5920 Yes, thats basically the idea of just burning. As for the long term?? That's hard to say, Depends on how much has been put in there. Also in this situation its hard to know when that generator was last serviced. Or when that was last even looked at or cleaned. This is the growing pains of purchasing a older used power boat. You're bound to find pit falls, And especially in a boats that are sitting a lot and not used on a regular basis. This is something that I would watch very carefully and in a week or so. Or in set amount of running hours id be opening that fuel filter back up and looking at what it looks like. That will give you a idea of what's going on it that tank. Id also probably invest in a clear section of hose. And do a dip test. And pull some fuel out of that tank and see what it look like. There's also a bacteria (Diesel Bug) that can grow in diesel fuel tank. It's easy to detect, and easy to clean up. Most of the time just getting a few gallons of the additive will take care of the problem. I will say this, Ive delt with Diesel Bug in the past. And have never seen fuel that ugly from Diesel Bug in those filters that he showed in the video. But if all the fuel in that tank looks that bad from Diesel Bug and not someone adding used engine oil (The dip test i mentioned) Then he has real big problem on his hands. And I doubt just adding a cleaner will fix that. If that's the case, A complete pump out of ALL the fuel in that take, and then a "douching" and then pump that fuel out and then refill with known good clean fuel and add a preventive going forward will likely be the fix. Id hate to see the cost of that 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ However any Detroit Marine Engine (or any heavy duty marine engine manufacturer) Can test a sample of the fuel and tell you 100% whats going on in that tank. And thats what I'd be doing if this was my boat. You get the test kit and take the sample yourself and have it tested for pretty cheap.

    Only real liquid wrench and a drill and punch might get the gas cap off. If it doesn't have dimples it needs a few and punch it at an angle in the loosen direction might get it off in one piece lots of wrench, it will set up again so stay with it

    Hey Bobby dont use a torch to loosen the rusted fuel cap.🚣‍♂️.. all the fluids in the gen SET, should be trashed. And REPLACED, after you flush the system.

    Owning a boat and owning toilet are basically the same; eventually you are going to embrace it in order to work on it. There is no way around it. By the way, your boat is no way like a toilet. Awesome boat!!
