- Prince William flew off in a helicopter after he was made leader of an Army unit by King Charles in Hampshire today. His Majesty was spotted arriving at the Army Aviation Centre in Middle Wallop, Hampshire, where he officially handed over the role of Colonel-in-Chief to the Prince of Wales.

First chair is the pilot at the co-pilot gunner position. Pilot normally sits the higher up chair 2nd chair. This allows them to see their flight path and obstacles. First chair allows focus on ground forces support. Both chairs have a flying station and a combat station so somewhat interchangeable.

Instead of listening to tabloid, information are available including in USA where part of the exam was done and he was extremely appreciated by the US instructor who said that they were impressed. Records are available. William never passed the exams as he cannot. It was also clearly explained. The Apache has two pilots: a Pilot who sits in the rear seat, and a copilot/gunner (CPG) in the front seat. The CPG is a fully trained and qualified pilot, both stations have flight controls and the aircraft can be flown from either seat, but for typical flight operations the pilot focuses on flying the aircraft while the CPG focuses on the sensors and weapons. The pilot is usually the senior/more experienced aviator of the two, and the CPG is usually (but not always) a more junior pilot.
Both prince William and his brother Harry are CPG, this doesn’t mean they can not fly the helicopter but their primary task is to be the gunner.

@@susansmith6737actually Prince WILLIAM served in the RAF Search and Rescue, joining in 2009. He served as a PILOT there as well. And served until 2013. He was involved in 156 rescues which resulted in 149 people being saved. The start of his military service began in 2006.
He then served as an air ambulance PILOT for 2 years with East Anglian Air Ambulance, starting in 2015 until 2017. No one said anything about a decade, but since you did it seems Prince William did serve for over a decade.
Now that is a true aviator...and much deserved reward!!!!

How recent was this? As second in line to the throne I thought he was prohibited from flying military aircraft at this point. No doubt he has excellent skills as a pilot knowing and reading his past service history.

One of the things I admire most about the royals is that they all have served in the military and can lead from a place of experience. I can't say that about American presidents. I say this as a military wife who's husband served for 14 years.
