    never thought of religion once the hundreds of times I have heard this song. It is only mentioned in the first line. then my mind wanders to what I believe the song really is trying to get across. Just love for someone, that if you allow yourself to look past the fear of love, you will be set free and have love for someone(maybe just yourself) someday. "Love it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you, it will set you free. Be more like the man you were made to be."

Clearly not a christian band. But I believe that music was made for people to interpret it in different ways. So, the way I interpret some of Mumford and Sons' music is in worship.

Love for the average human means saying sorry when our imperfections cause us to act in any way that isn't loving to others. Acknowledging weakness to others when we mess up and saying sorry not only strengthens us, but is one of the most loving things we can do for others :)

    This song isn't really about Christianity. I mean, it can mean whatever it wants to anyone who finds meaning in it, but as many have pointed out it's clearly related to Much Ado About Nothing. It has many lyrics from a song in the play, as well as other lines. This song seems to be based around the character Benedick in my opinion.

  • @AdventurewithDave
    @AdventurewithDave Před 11 lety

    I think only they know. Mumford and Sons are clearly not Christian as a band, but they do come from Christian backgrounds. For example Marcus' parents are long standing leaders in the vineyard Churches. So he has definitely been influenced by the Christian faith is some way, and you could quite easily argue that their music is influenced by this. I used this song for my baptism because of it's poetic lyrics yes, but also for deeper meanings (which they may or not have intended to portray).

    Lyrics have nothing to do with (any) religion. They're just having fun with Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing". ‘Serve God, love me and mend’ and ‘Man is a giddy thing’ are lines said by Benedick. I hate to jump in on any shtupid debate on the web, but Shakespeare came from an England that was heavily influenced by Christianity. One could even argue that England was at that time a Christian nation. You don't have to agree that it is a purely religious song and it doesn't have to be purely atheist or agnostic. It is a beautiful piece of poetry set to beautiful music.
