I really really needed to hear this song at this exact moment. Thank God. I have something that has handicapped me my whole life and I realize I can change with the help of God. I really appreciate the video.
I believe that this is truly the best song in the world.
This song just makes me smile and lifts my heart.
this always makes me think of when Gabriel died in Supernatural :c but i love mumford and sons so i can't help but listen to it. such a beautiful song.
Whether they see it or not, there's an awareness & conviction in their lyrics.
Mumford and sons marathon for me!!
I'm not religious at all, agnostic actually, but this song, brings me to life.
I love this song. This is the first time I have heard.
Love does set us free, and allows us to be who we are made to be.
never thought of religion once the hundreds of times I have heard this song. It is only mentioned in the first line. then my mind wanders to what I believe the song really is trying to get across. Just love for someone, that if you allow yourself to look past the fear of love, you will be set free and have love for someone(maybe just yourself) someday. "Love it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you, it will set you free. Be more like the man you were made to be."
The actual, true lyric is "to cry". I do agree that it would make sense to have it say "a cry", but the words you have in the video are correct. Thanks for making the video, too! I love Mumford and Sons!
this song.. no matter how many times i listen to it, still gives me chills..
Wherever the words came from, they are beautiful, as is the song. Marcus could sing at my baptism any time! Whether Shakespeare's original words were intended as Christian, I think they are made so here. I really love these guys.
This song reminds me of Much Ado About Nothing, our school did this play and at the end the final dance was to this song. A lot of the lines in this song are from the book/movie.
I hope I am not misreading this song, but it makes me happy :)
NEW FAVORITE SONG!
Beautiful song
if i were to ever make a movie, the ending would have the hero, covered in dirt and blood, squinting from the sun, walking in slow motion through a field to this song..
People never cared about each other. We just stopped hiding it. :/
God's love is unconditional. It will not betray you. It will not dismay you or enslave you. God's love will set you free. I dont know if Mumford and sons are Christian. Clearly not a christian band. But I believe that music was made for people to interpret it in different ways. So, the way I interpret some of Mumford and Sons' music is in worship.
Only a few more hours before I get to see them play. Hope it stops raining soon.
I wanna cry. This song is perfect T.T Love Mumford
im not religious but i love this song.
glad to know i aint the only one
i dont believe in god but still love Mumford&Sons
1 person is betrayed, dismayed and enslaved. the rest of us are free
Pray tell, where is she that shall set me free?
Most of the lyrics are taken directly from William Shakespeare's play "Much Ado About Nothing", while a large portion of the album is inspired by many of his other plays.
Am I the only one who listens to this song just for the most epic musical climax ever? :x
every time i hear this song it always make me so sad to know that the world has changed so much and that many people dont give a shit about your feelings anymore, what happened to make people stop caring about each other?!
Its not the fact of religion, the basis of this song is actually about one of Shakespeare's plays Much Ado About Nothing. Alot of the lyrics in this song are lines from his play. Fun fact of the day.
It is mt personal belief that the band Mumford and Sons put things in their songs that could easily be taken religiously but claim that they are not a christian band so that appeal to a wider audience.
"Old man is a gunnie-pig!!"
Lol- Thats what my brother thought it said...:)!
haha!! It's, "Oh, Man is a giddy thing".
That gave me a good laugh, haha!
First world Problems: Can't decide what Mumford and sons song to play next because they are all so damn good.
Amen!
I sing this at my summer camp and its just amazing
Agreed completely.
I've got the lyrics book right here, and it's "a cry." He's listing things. "A design, an alignment, a cry."
*Sigh* Hellooo??? I'm sighing here!!!
love these lyrics
Yes, of course the band is named after Marcus Mumford. I think she meant what Mumford & Sons implied in this song.
We really dug your video. You need to make more
Oh my god I want to see this live
The lyrics are from Much Ado About Nothing, but it also has religious associations. You cannot talk about God and not without religion.
if anything, it is Marcus rebelling against it. Broken Crown especially shows this
"be more like the man you were made to be..." easier said than done Marcus
In the lyric book that comes with the CD, it says "A cry," not "to cry."
Yep! :)
Who cares if there christian or not. Christian motif is found through out our society. accept it, deal with it, come to terms with it. They see a messages and hope to reach out to those in need though there music. Not seeking praise but genuine hospitality.
friends ONLY frenemies
LOVE is GREATER than fear
don'tcha wanna be FREE
JESUS IS THE WAY TRUTH LIFE
So my best mate works at the O2 and literally brushed shoulders with M&Sons the other day. Gutted to the max
I'd say "advancement" in our species. The more we advance the more the cost of living goes up. Almost to the point of not being able to do a good deed unless getting paid for it. Not to mention everyone now only works works works, and has no time for fun, just to "live."
Love means never having to say youre sorry.
+Lindsay Steel That's perfection, and I only know of one man who has ever achieved that. Love for the average human means saying sorry when our imperfections cause us to act in any way that isn't loving to others. Acknowledging weakness to others when we mess up and saying sorry not only strengthens us, but is one of the most loving things we can do for others :)
Hello CZcams! Cheers for all your comments and views, it's good to know that my little video has inpacted you all in such a way and sparked discussion. Keep them coming in and feel free to use this space for your opinions!
Thanks for your comment. I agree it could well be "a cry" but playing it back a few times now i can't honestly decide what is correct, i guess we will never know. I personally still think it sounds more like what i have put, but dont think it makes a whole lot of differance either way. Thanks very much though :)
im glad you told us
Their new album sounds like gospel, but i strangley love it.
Munford and sons set me free! :D
Guys just thought you'd like to know.... This song (as awsome as it is) is just quoating William Shakespear... It's from much ado about noting.... i Know this coz im performing it, song came on shuffle and thought this was pretty cool!
Why hasn't nobody made a karaoke version of this song already!
true; its hard to talk about love without conveying something Christian by default.
Powerful lyrics...
This song is so great because they took some lines from Shakespeare's plays and put them in this song as lyrics.
LYRICAL GENIUS...
They don't imply it, but if you look closely, there the message is
in the lyric book on the mumford and sons cd it says that the lyrics is' A cry'
I listened to it on full volume a few times it sounds like " to cry" not "a cry"
This isn't all theirs, its from Shakespear's "Much Ado About Nothing." Its my favorite play of his, mostly for how beautiful the words are, and why I love this song :)
I'm not quite sure if it has a religious backgroud or anything but I think Mumford comes from the lead singers last name.
By my troth a good song
dope
Reference to The Count of Monte Cristo? If so, I love it!
Wish i was :'(
Actually a lot of the lyrics of this song are from William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing.
After writing my comment below, I got out my edition of Shakespeare to check where in "Much Ado About Nothing" they took this lyric from. I opened the book RIGHT to the right page (Act II, scene iii, p. 607)! Coincidence? Twilight Zone? Does Marcus have a direct line to God? Whatever, I'm playing the video again . . .
@MicroKorgFan Well after the words it will set you free. theres the whole there is a design and alignment a cry of my heart to see. And I see that most lyrics on goodle say its there is a design an alignment TO cry. But if you listen and it just would make sense for the lyrics to be there is a design and alignment A cry. SOo ya lol i just assumed those were the lyrics! and its just one simple word but I may be wrong lol.
Even though I'm atheist i have no problem with this song or the band :3
(prepares for 'nobody cares' comments xD)
Obviously you can hear him clearly say "To cry"
when I first heard this song I thought it was 'old man is guinea pig' ...
Modern make of Hey Nonny Nonny by Shakespeare...
It's definitely to if you listen, not A. and a doesn't really make sense "an alignment a cry" or "An alignment to cry," see what I mean?
Or don't, and keep the meaning you found yourself. :P I sometimes give a certain meaning to a song, and then I learn that it is about a completely different thing... and I usually prefer "my" version.
@Dave Martin Great work I love moviemaker also! For my photography I use photogallery maker from windows! Don't like photoshop, and expensive stuff :)
@PurceysMusic Hey man thanks for the input, however i have Googled the lyrics on a few different websites to check and replayed my video for clarification and can't find a mistake... Which part of the video do you think is wrong? Thanks
Hey there, cheers for the response. I actually used Windows Movie Maker and a load of patience!
I always thought he said old man is a giddy thing
I like to think of it as that their songs are stories. As I've heard in my literature classes, the author and narrator are not necessarily the same person. Therefore, some of the speakers in their songs may or may not share the same beliefs as them.
This song isn't really about Christianity. I mean, it can mean whatever it wants to anyone who finds meaning in it, but as many have pointed out it's clearly related to Much Ado About Nothing. It has many lyrics from a song in the play, as well as other lines. This song seems to be based around the character Benedick in my opinion.
I think only they know. Mumford and Sons are clearly not Christian as a band, but they do come from Christian backgrounds. For example Marcus' parents are long standing leaders in the vineyard Churches. So he has definitely been influenced by the Christian faith is some way, and you could quite easily argue that their music is influenced by this. I used this song for my baptism because of it's poetic lyrics yes, but also for deeper meanings (which they may or not have intended to portray).
On my lyrics thing " i have the disk" it says TO cry
I don't exactly think that because of the background you come from or what your parents did makes for what you yourself do. ^ I completely agree with Caroline Levine....
Lyrics have nothing to do with (any) religion. They're just having fun with Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing". ‘Serve God, love me and mend’ and ‘Man is a giddy thing’ are lines said by Benedick. By reading the play you can perfectly understand each word of the lyrics. I hardly recommend doing that to everyone who loves this song (or at least watching Brannagh's adaptation
they just said what part.....
Well doesn't that mean life is over?!
first time I've heard this song and I love it! graphics were pretty good to - did you use prezzi? (think thats how its spelt) :)
THE FUCKING BANJO, IS SO OVER POWER!
I hate to jump in on any shtupid debate on the web, but Shakespeare came from an England that was heavily influenced by Christianity. One could even argue that England was at that time a Christian nation. You don't have to agree that it is a purely religious song and it doesn't have to be purely atheist or agnostic. It is a beautiful piece of poetry set to beautiful music.
They may not generally be a religious-centered band. but this song has more than enough to be seen as at least portraying a religious subject/believer. It's not even subtext.
I love this band I think they are BRILLIANT. They are poets singing to sometimes sad and bittersweet Irish folk music. Mumford and Sons is AMAZING~!
