AC Compressor Open Windings Outdoor Unit Won’t Start

  • I am on a no ac service call where the indoor unit runs yet outdoor unit doesn’t start. I find power going through the contactor to the motors yet nothing is running. I then feel the compressor and it is hot. I test the motor windings and they are open OL. I run water on the compressor to cool it off. The windings close I find a defective capacitor, replace the capacitor. Turn the system back on compressor and condenser fan motor start right up. This ac system will live to keep my client comfortable.

      You should seek a second opinion. Was the compressor hot? Did he test the capacitor before saying it was bad? Check compressor windings, try a hard start/ super boost? Sounds more like a sales tech. Unless the compressor was grounded 10 minutes is a quick call

    Those Lennox units are fantastic. My previous house has one from 1990 with a reciprocating compressor. The new house owner is still using it today! Only big repair it ever had was a new filter dryer. They are solid units.

    Not discounting your ability so please don't take offence. You are the kind of tech everyone in the game needs to be. Too many shonks around.

      The terminals on the compressor are sealed. I would think as long as plug and the terninals don't have water on them. It should be ok. This was around 100f degrees which is close to 38 celsius. Seems like this trade is changing. My style of work might not be what many employers want. I am a tech not a salesman. Seems thats what most companies want from what I see on facebook.

      @@thehvachacker I would do exactly what you do. Try and fix the thing. I am sick of this throw away society we've become.
      The company I work for actually prefer repair than to replace, but if the economic value of the repair exceeds a replacement, then you may as well replace the unit. Some of the stuff I work on is over 25 years old and it's testament to the build quaity of old and the Techs before me who kept them in shape. Everything is moving into electronics and high tech. The old school D.O.L. start is disappearing. Multi head systems, variable speed compressors. Yes, the trade is changing.

I know all brands leak a little, but seem like I ran into more with these? Fixed one by removing a single run (multiple-cracks in CU under the fins) right at the bottom about 8 years ago...just did PM on it this spring and still running with no leaks. Yes maybe a tiny hit on efficiency, but that's what customer wanted.

      Brently Palmer - When a service tech asks for “space to work” that’s a red flag to watch him even more closely. I would have done the same as this customer... grab the hose, offer a beer, be friendly, and watch.

      @nick4819 Před 5 lety +1

      @@truthsmiles Exactly. If he had told me to back off so he could work...I'd have told him to leave and I'd call somebody else. If I'm paying for your service...I have every right to follow you around and watch exactly what you are doing. Old man wasn't in the way.

    • @truthsmiles
      @truthsmiles Před 5 lety +1

      nick4819 - That’s pretty extreme, IMO. I’d probably just hang around anyway and if he really insisted on being left alone I’d push back with some excuse like “Nothing personal, but you’re on my property and I’ve been ripped off before. I’ll be quiet and stay out of your way.”
      If that didn’t work and he still insisted I’d pull out the cash to cover the minimum service call charge, hand it to him, thank him for his time and tell him not to worry about fixing it.
      But as we saw in the video the first strategy worked - just be friendly, helpful if possible, and you’re likely to get a nice reaction.
      Some service techs have had bad experiences with customers nitpicking and complaining about stuff they don’t understand and generally causing problems/slowdowns. So in my book, even though it’s a red flag, he gets a pass for the initial request as long as he gracefully handles my denial :)

      If I need space I just run you over and it would be your own fault you got payed out by accident. I work alone with no one standing over me. It’s a good way to waste money. If the job takes a serious I go into a zone and my workspace needs to be clear cause I expect nothing to be on my way of where I’m going. I also put a watcher to work as you see he is string hose and turning water on. Just put yourself at work do you work with an asshole standing over you?

      The HVAC Hacker - My customers aren’t “assholes” - they pay my bills and feed me & my family.
      But perhaps it’s a northeastern thing and customers are used to that kind of treatment or are easy to replace(?)
      Where I’m from (Oklahoma) being polite is a lot more important. If I don’t treat customers with respect, word gets around and they’ll go to someone else.

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  Před 5 lety +4

      The compressor is not air cooled. For sound dampening reasons also to keep the outdoor heat off the compressor is put in an insulated location. many systems are done like this. The refrigerant is what keeps the compressor cool

    Good vid. My system shut down couple days ago.
    Got fan motor replaced 1 year ago last week. Now fan won't start and compressor won't run. Does the fan only turn on if the compressor is running...ie are they synced to run together? I haven't tested the fan or compressor yet, may do that now after seeing how it's done. I did test the capacitor and it is operating properly. This all happened suddenly Saturday morning, no odd sounds like last time when the fan went out over a period days (making that awful noise). Makes me think the compressor just petered out. It's a 15 year old Trane XR11. If the fan were still under warranty that doesn't help me if it going out caused my compressor to overheat and crap out.
    good video though...

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  Před 5 lety

      The system if shut down on a safety would do the same thing. Yes the compressor and condenser fan come on together. They get energized off the contactor. If the contactor doesn’t pull in either the thermostat is no good, or a safety somewhere is stopping it from pulling in. Another issue could be bad contact points on the contactor if it pulls in
