AC Compressor Open Windings Outdoor Unit Won’t Start

- I am on a no ac service call where the indoor unit runs yet outdoor unit doesn’t start. I find power going through the contactor to the motors yet nothing is running. I then feel the compressor and it is hot. I test the motor windings and they are open OL. I run water on the compressor to cool it off. The windings close I find a defective capacitor, replace the capacitor. Turn the system back on compressor and condenser fan motor start right up. This ac system will live to keep my client comfortable.
Friendly, curious customer. Pretty cool he gave you a beer. Good work!
I can tell Bill's a people person. He relates well to customers and they obviously trust him. The free beer is a nice reward for a job well done.
That was a really good beer
My hvac guy took 10 mins and said he replaced the capacitor so it should be the compressor. Wish I had you.
You should seek a second opinion. Was the compressor hot? Did he test the capacitor before saying it was bad? Check compressor windings, try a hard start/ super boost? Sounds more like a sales tech. Unless the compressor was grounded 10 minutes is a quick call
Those Lennox units are fantastic. My previous house has one from 1990 with a reciprocating compressor. The new house owner is still using it today! Only big repair it ever had was a new filter dryer. They are solid units.
Yes they are really good systems. They were still made to last unlike some of the junk I’m seeing made today
There are still lots of older Lennox condensers around here from the 80s that are running just fine. That unit is worth repairing rather than replacing.
This machine has 10 years left in it. Unless the idiots trying to belittle me in these comments work on it, then it’s headed to the scrap yard
Good vid Hackster and your always friendly to your customers ... Sometimes they just like to watch ...
Glad I stumbled upon this channel, I’m 20 years old and getting my first year in hvac, seeing the honest work video after video definitely inspires me, good job and salutes to you man, keep the videos comin 💪🏼
Huriel Trevino same here he’s very informative as well!
He mighta been over your shoulder but that beer made up for it. Great vid!
He stayed around yet gave me the space i need. For me its more my personal space for safety.
That beer he got from his customer. I drink it myself while watching this video :D greetings from Germany :)
I still have to drink it. Haven’t had any time to sit and relax since I received that gift.
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you had time for the beer now. And by the way I like your videos for me they are very relaxing after a hard day at work. :)
good video man. I enjoyed and learned more from you. I work in the A/C business and no one teaches me the way you work. I have to google everything to get a better understanding and become better than other co workers that say " Oh compressor no good. Buy a new one". Wish I can find a job that has workers like you.
Your videos are fun to watch. I live in Florida and I do all I can for my HVAC SYSTEM. My wife and I push it hard 74 during the day 69 at night. Power bill less then $200 in July and August 1,900Sqft home.
Wish you were in my area. Someone that is a real tech and knows what he is doing.
I like this guy calmness
Nice , really polite to clients and knowledge and skills
Nice up until he made the smart comment of telling dude to "back off because I can't work with someone standing on top of me." Old dude is just curious...most men enjoy watching other men fix stuff. It's fascinating and it's in our nature.
its a safety hazard so I have to set my perimeter so I can have a safe space to work
@@thehvachacker
I watch your videos
They are really nice
I would also like to commend you for not ripping him off by telling him the compressor was bad.
Not my style I rather fix than replace. Makes customers trust me than feel like I am just trying to sell them a new system
The HVAC Hacker how was the beer? Maybe I can check a burned out unit at a new home, we purchased. I will be careful. Great video. Hope we have experts like you in North Florida. 🙏
That guy is cool giving you a beer.
Well Done. Very thorough work. I wonder if the customer understood what you were telling him.
hvac gets bad name from dishonest company,s . i tell customers im glad they hang with me cuz i explain my way through the problem. when were done they understand the issue and feel good about me being honest. good biz. thx for vid bud
I don’t mind them staying around. Just need a clearance of my personal space to feel safe. Never know if a compressor terminal will blow out or system blows a spark
I want them there so they know I have done all the checks.
Love your work man. Just be extra careful when your hosing stuff down making sure everything is dry before re energising. Made me nervous watching you hose down the compressor terminals and all. I like to wipe everything with a cloth and wait till air dried before putting power back on.
Not discounting your ability so please don't take offence. You are the kind of tech everyone in the game needs to be. Too many shonks around.
I'm in Australia, and if you don't perform in your job, you won't keep it for long. I've been in the game for 20 years now and still enjoy what I do. Customer satisfaction is paramount.
The terminals on the compressor are sealed. I would think as long as plug and the terninals don't have water on them. It should be ok. This was around 100f degrees which is close to 38 celsius. Seems like this trade is changing. My style of work might not be what many employers want. I am a tech not a salesman. Seems thats what most companies want from what I see on facebook.
@@thehvachacker I would do exactly what you do. Try and fix the thing. I am sick of this throw away society we've become.
The company I work for actually prefer repair than to replace, but if the economic value of the repair exceeds a replacement, then you may as well replace the unit. Some of the stuff I work on is over 25 years old and it's testament to the build quaity of old and the Techs before me who kept them in shape. Everything is moving into electronics and high tech. The old school D.O.L. start is disappearing. Multi head systems, variable speed compressors. Yes, the trade is changing.
Keep up the great work mate !
You’re very professional
I do my best for everyone
@@thehvachacker By far the most unprofessional prick in the industry. Probably the same guy replacing capacitors for 400!
Keep this up please thanks, from Iran
I do the best I can for all my customers
First time to see someone try to fix an AC with garden hose.
That's pretty bad then, only way to quickly close the windings is to cool it off
Cheapest and easiest way to cool a compressor off.
that homeowner is nice, spectating ur every work, thats kinda nice one.
if the fella pays for cleaning/checkup, he's probably wondering why it broke down and he now has to pay for parts and service call lol
Awesome work man! I'm 14 and I already know that my passion is HVAC and I wanna go into the career! I'm learning alot from your videos and work! My top #1 favorite HVAC youtuber for sure ;) keep up the great work

Thanks. This was very good for what I needed. Been awhile since working on an AC unit.
Those were the best units that Lennox ever made.
Agree! they are nice an quiet due to the design, but I've see the condensers leak on these series both HP and AC in the past. What's your experience? I know all brands leak a little, but seem like I ran into more with these? Fixed one by removing a single run (multiple-cracks in CU under the fins) right at the bottom about 8 years ago...just did PM on it this spring and still running with no leaks. Yes maybe a tiny hit on efficiency, but that's what customer wanted.
@@TheGgin as far as leaks go I wouldn't put them in the notorious category. Just a few here and there. of course the king valve on the discharge line would leak some so you would always have to seal it with Teflon tape or nylog. But those were pretty tough units. I replaced the little green time-delay board on them then anything else.
@@sknight0391 Ok must be some one offs for me. :-) Thanks, you have a great weekend Sir!
My previous house has one from 1990. The new homeowner is still using it today!
Great job! Nice and Thorough! Also, nice troubleshooting skills. You knew what to check and how to correct the problem. Its amazing how important a cap is in these units.
Those capacitors with multi set up are much more in cost than the two name plate sized capacitors. I know they reduce the parts needed to cover a range of sizes.
Another thorough job!
Thanks that was a busy day
You look like you need a vacation, but really the worst thing is when someone is standing over you
I don’t mind someone watching I don’t like when they are in my personal space
U r really awesome air conditioner engineer. Last month my portable ac has refrigerant leakage and I called a technician in corona lockdown. He was not good in work and takes two trip to completely figure out and resolve the issue. Also he was blaming why u purchased this Bluestar fiber air conditioner unit.
You should have asked him how his sister was doing after you dropped her off.
Had a couple of those beers last night! One of my customers has an off-licence that sells speciality beers.
Wow, it must be an immigrant from Czechoslovakia. At the start, when he asked if you need water, it sounds like Czech "voda". Then you got Pilsen beer. So if you meet him, say him "dobry den, zdravi vas z ceske republiky" :-)
We're all interested in learning new things--why we're looking over your shoulder.
Yeah if someone is looking over my shoulder I just take it as an opportunity to educate them. Makes an awkward situation kind of fun.
Always turn on thermostat yourself, never trust a homeowner, they sometimes turn the fan switch to on and think the system is on and have you chasing your ghost, plus if the stat has a timed delay the home owner wouldn’t know..
I've learned this the hard way. Customers can really mislead you.
Nice job on the air conditioner. Would call you fella but I fix my own stuff and keep informed on You Tube. Peace too.
You do the maintenance on the generator also
Good job!
I auto-assumed bad capacitor and open thermal overload on compressor when you showed the contactor was pulled in and voltage on both sides, I also wondered if the fan motor was good :)
Milwaukee had to copy ryobi on that cordless fan. Does it run using a extension cord instead of the battery as well?
czcams.com/video/pY5g7DJAYcI/video.html
Its a great fan they all make them now. It does have a cord that came with it
Good vid! The customer wasn't too bad, kinda cool. Though I would have still been mentally exhausted by the end of the job none the less. Cool beer though!
Text book perfect job. Peace brother
Thanks
Did yiu check pressures?
Hi Hacker, great video and Thanks for take your time to make this. I would like to know if you can please help me with something? I have a westinghouse GP5RD-060K AC (5tons), this season the AC had a leaked, now is fixed, but suddenly started to fail just in the mornings, between 8 and 9 am, the compressor make a big noise and does not compress, when happen that, I turn off the compressor (turn off the "cool on" in the thermostat), wait few minutes, and turn on again the compressor (cool on) and works fine all day, even in the night. Do you have an idea of why is happen this? Greatings from Mexico!
Good job 👍👍👌👏
With both ur hand swinging while walking, looks like ur on the march... Haha
just to give you heads up there was a resistance between start and run windings that tells you right there the overload was tripped you already have OL between common and start and common and run. watch your video again. All windings were not open.
When he handed ya that liquid gold I had to go and get one myself. Thankfully nothing more then the condensor blew.
That was a really good beer when I finally found time to sit down and enjoy it
Good job, nice n quick. It only works with juice to it, lololol. Nice beer gift. Enjoy it and HVAC ON KID!!!
Those turbo capacitors are quite pricey. I’m too cheap to pay $60-$90 for a run capacitor. Also, that expensive part means that you have to charge the customer more money for the service call.
Offer two year warranty.
Be careful though because a capacitor influence a lot the life of your compressor and if it goes bad it takes the compressor with it
They make those malco bits in 4'' and 6'' also trying to save you one less bit to carry I haven't seen them in any store but they have them online for around $13 for the 6''
Great vid
Nice job
9:22 yes we do
Good work I am inspired.
That was a great job Hacker. What brand and model of the caps did you use. They did not have the adjustable caps when I was doing lots of HVAC work. Many thanks for that video.
I use my turbo for testing only.
My rv a/c quit and it turned out to be the 7.5 mf run cap. $2.65 at supply store and it works great.
Nice repair / trouble shooting
Thanks Jeff
Wonder why those back up generators have to be right up against the condensers? Good one hacker.
nota newbie - Look at it from the homeowner’s perspective: They want all the “utility crap” in one place, preferably out of view. Also, it’s likely the best place for making short runs with large electrical wires. The main circuit breaker panel is probably very nearby.
lol, the camera picture sure give the look the fan is slow and turning backwards,
looked like the motor was slow and running backwards but over all good video
That's how fans look on video.
The cameras frame rate does interesting things. In this video I play with the frame rate to show how the camera messes with how the fans look like they are operating AC Compressor Short Cycling No Power At Condenser czcams.com/video/Ec-0MQq-Yns/video.html
I hate to sound like a wiseguy but it looked like your condenser fan was going the wrong direction. I could be wrong if so I apologize.
The camera frame rate does amazing things to moving stuff. Here is a video where I was playing with the frame rate showing what it does to fan blades spinning czcams.com/video/Ec-0MQq-Yns/video.html
I was thinking the same.
When you get a chance can you do a video on r22 to 407 c conversion on a condenser
Thanks
You don't really need a convo on this you cannot retrofit a r-22 unit or you'll have to change the evaporotor and the whole condensing unit
I cool the compressor down with ice, old cool whip dish upside down will hold the cubes for you.
“Please give me some space to work”. Proceeds to be right on top of ya. Lmao nice work though man.
Brently Palmer - When a service tech asks for “space to work” that’s a red flag to watch him even more closely. I would have done the same as this customer... grab the hose, offer a beer, be friendly, and watch.
@@truthsmiles Exactly. If he had told me to back off so he could work...I'd have told him to leave and I'd call somebody else. If I'm paying for your service...I have every right to follow you around and watch exactly what you are doing. Old man wasn't in the way.
nick4819 - That’s pretty extreme, IMO. I’d probably just hang around anyway and if he really insisted on being left alone I’d push back with some excuse like “Nothing personal, but you’re on my property and I’ve been ripped off before. I’ll be quiet and stay out of your way.”
If that didn’t work and he still insisted I’d pull out the cash to cover the minimum service call charge, hand it to him, thank him for his time and tell him not to worry about fixing it.
But as we saw in the video the first strategy worked - just be friendly, helpful if possible, and you’re likely to get a nice reaction.
Some service techs have had bad experiences with customers nitpicking and complaining about stuff they don’t understand and generally causing problems/slowdowns. So in my book, even though it’s a red flag, he gets a pass for the initial request as long as he gracefully handles my denial :)
If I need space I just run you over and it would be your own fault you got payed out by accident. I work alone with no one standing over me. It’s a good way to waste money. If the job takes a serious I go into a zone and my workspace needs to be clear cause I expect nothing to be on my way of where I’m going. I also put a watcher to work as you see he is string hose and turning water on. Just put yourself at work do you work with an asshole standing over you?
The HVAC Hacker - My customers aren’t “assholes” - they pay my bills and feed me & my family.
But perhaps it’s a northeastern thing and customers are used to that kind of treatment or are easy to replace(?)
Where I’m from (Oklahoma) being polite is a lot more important. If I don’t treat customers with respect, word gets around and they’ll go to someone else.
The old guy probably thought damn he can fix everything with just water haha
Water can fix or destroy many things
I seriously hate those capacitors,
mychoclabwinston I know they always blow up in my face 😂
Yeah three phase supply to the unit would be a much better way
FrozenHaxor a lot cheaper to operate, lol
Im having the same issue with the windings, would they close by themselves after a couple of days? or is it better to put cool water?
They will cool off in a few days. The compressor may or may not reset the open windings since overheating can burn the compressor out.
I have a young guy at my shop, that wants these caps, they are 10 times the price, of a reg dual cap, I said order any amount of dual caps you want, no to these, don’t trust them
I won’t keep anything else on my truck. Have been using these for 15+ years and believe they are stronger and have 5 year manufacturers warranty. Must have a big service truck to stock all different combinations.
Good stuff. What state are you in. Housing and lawns look nice.
Not to be ignorant but every condenser unit I have seen has the compressor in the air stream not this one in a hot box. Whats up with that design. Its like forgetting your winter cover is on and blowing your cap.
The compressor is not air cooled. For sound dampening reasons also to keep the outdoor heat off the compressor is put in an insulated location. many systems are done like this. The refrigerant is what keeps the compressor cool
Thanks for the reply now I understand the units I have seen cheaper built . I guess condenser maintenance more if a problem or just a cheap cap. Thanks for the heads up I have 30 years in automotive and class 8 trucks. The systems principal operation is the same but with different components.Thats why I am interested. Thank you for sharing your day with us.
How long it's too long to get the compressor to get out of it's thermal protection ??
A bag with ice always work plus you can check fan will you wait
Fan works and a hose is more available than bag of ice.. by the time I get ice the compressor is already cooled of. Fan works good. Do you actually carry bags of ice?
How is it going Bro , I like that run cap got to add that to my truck stock for
A/C. Jobs 👍
No you don't...not at $70 a pop on Amazon...no telling what suppliers are selling them for. No less than $100 for sure...then you have to add your markup on it...I can't see myself charging a customer $140 for a fucking capacitor...
It's the only cap to carry as truck stock. Its all my employer stocks on 50+ service trucks. We don't sell capacitors we are providing comfort
The HVAC Hacker 50+ Trucks you guys service the entire state of Nj ?
What is the name of the cap and what venders carry it ?
Good vid. My system shut down couple days ago.
Got fan motor replaced 1 year ago last week. Now fan won't start and compressor won't run. Does the fan only turn on if the compressor is running...ie are they synced to run together? I haven't tested the fan or compressor yet, may do that now after seeing how it's done. I did test the capacitor and it is operating properly. This all happened suddenly Saturday morning, no odd sounds like last time when the fan went out over a period days (making that awful noise). Makes me think the compressor just petered out. It's a 15 year old Trane XR11. If the fan were still under warranty that doesn't help me if it going out caused my compressor to overheat and crap out.
good video though...
The system if shut down on a safety would do the same thing. Yes the compressor and condenser fan come on together. They get energized off the contactor. If the contactor doesn’t pull in either the thermostat is no good, or a safety somewhere is stopping it from pulling in. Another issue could be bad contact points on the contactor if it pulls in
Chow 👏🏼
HVAC Hacker - wasn't it you here on CZcams that had the attachment for a hose which was magnetic to keep it attached to the compressor? If so, what brand is it?

Why the fan is not running while compressor is on
the fan is running
@@thehvachacker It's the frame rate of his camera. It makes it look like the fan isn't running, but it most likely is.

Have to keep customer informed
Hope you didn't get them new boots wet LOL
They are really good at keeping the water out. today they were wet as I cleaned 5 condensers standing in some muddy mulch water

also looking to rotate opposite given the angle of the blades.
Fan is spinning correctly yet the camera does interesting things to it
