It was a dystopian society having kids is a symbol of hope- that people can move forward to a less oppressive society and not have to worry about their children dying. It is symbolic. If no one had kids ever again after Snow was dead and Coin was dead then society would eventually end with no one left. How is that a hopeful ending knowing that Cinna and Finnick and Rue and Mags and Prim died (as well as a ton of other people) for there to be no future generations that get to be free because of their sacrifice?

      Exactly. It's infuriating.
Whatever happened to democracy? For the majority of the world's history and in the majority of cultures still today, the expectation was to reserve sex for one or maybe two people in your life. Anyone who had lots of meaningless sex was considered promiscuous, and there were no further labels. Someone promiscuous could grow out of it and settle down to one love, but that was a moral decision as you say, not a personality change.
Why does a small elite of the last 60 years of Western history assume they are the only ones who understand sexuality after millennia of practically everyone understanding it quite differently?

    • @katg5547
      @katg5547 Před 6 měsíci +4

Actually, I thought that wasn't a thing, but if you only are able to be with someone with an emotional connection, yes you are demi, and it's not a bad thing, it's just putting a name, like personalities. It's just to know yourself. I used to think the same way, I didn't even know that could exist, and it was some kind of joke. But, when you are demi, it's not just about moral and being decent, is that your are literally not able to have sex, or even kissing someone else without a connection. Yes, I have morals, but also I can't have intimacy with someone without a connection, I just don't feel attracted, don't feel excited, and even kissing it's weird. And I'm an actress, so, to me, a kissing scene it's too hard. Because I just feel disgusted when I kiss someone without emotions. It's not about moral, because that can change, but your personality, and so as your sexuality it's not. It's just who you are. Moral is about your thoughts, but your sexuality it's about how you feel, and how your body interact with other people. I'm actually 34, and I'm glad that those things have a name, because it's easier to understand others and others understand you. It's easier to explain your self, and knowing yourself as well. You should try to know more about your self, so you can get why you act how you act in every circumstances.

@@katg5547 good point, but putting labels on people so much has the adverse effect of while comforting them, it could also restrict them and their development. Also, on the opposite end of this demi status is open promiscuity that

I think there's a scene in the movie that Katniss explain to Gale that she's too terrified and scared about everything to even think to have anykind of relationship or emotional connection, because the evil government already targeting and marking her loved ones. That's how I understand that she's barely functioning as sexual being, but always on survival state and set 'fighter' as default mode.
Imo, her situation is showing what the real oppression do to people's psychological behaviour. For Katniss, her whole focus and priorities is to survive and her family survival and safety. Not romance.
In real life, look at to the very low birth rate in Japan or South Korea for example. It's not because they're asexual people, but the situation (especially economy) and the work culture thing (people often died because they're exhausted from work), and isolation (limited human interaction or emotional connection), have psychological effect.
When you too busy and caught working hours to be able to have shelter and buying food, basically your time is spent for basic needs to survive, especially safety, you don't have time to 'first world problem' bs like this. It's people from Districk 1 and Capitol's problem.

Teen sexualization is a major, MAJOR problem in media that is made specifically for a teen audience. Seeing most fictional teens that are already sexually active would understandably make one feel like they are the odd one out and that there is something wrong with them ( even if they are just a young asexual ), when in reality they are perfectly normal and even more or less part of the majority. Stuff like this could subcounciously pressure one to enter a sexual relationship when they are not ready to.

As a die hard Hunger Games fan, I do kind of see what he means and the characters sexuality is important to the story, Katniss being closed off, not flirtatious, not pursuing a relationship etc. Because of the fear that any children she might have would end up in the games, whereas Lucy is much more promiscuous as a performer though it is hinted that it's all an act to make ends meet.
Katniss' fear of sex in any capacity can be seen when she talks about cray enlisting escorts that are too desperate to say no and she remarks that "it mightve been her if she had been a bit older." It's clearly traumatic for her. Lucy on the other hand is confidant when it comes to relationships and navigates those waters near effortlessly.

Thank goodness for Jenna Ortega, who by most reports saved Wednesday from being a sparkly vampire type story. There are some actresses who instantly throw a red flag for me. I will never see a movie with Brie Larson, Amanda Heard, or Rachel Zegler. There are also a couple actors I will never watch again either, like Ezra Miller or Mark Ruffalo.
Miller should be obvious to most, but Ruffalo might confuse people. Well, when the Rittenhouse trial was going on, Ruffalo said that Kyle was a murderer, and lamented the passing of "poor, poor Jojo". "Jojo" was the nickname he assigned to one of the men Rittenhouse shot on that fateful night, and was a convicted pea doe (disguised to avoid YT algorithm). I have no sympathy for pea does. I think any political ideology that sees the government as the solution to all their problems, aka Big Government, is the one you should worry about. Propaganda is used to demonize their political enemies while they use “safety and equity” as a way to hack away people’s civil liberties. Look at the covid response in 2020. Look at the way BLM protesters were treated in the media compared to right leaning protests during that same time. Liberals use to fight for liberties, now many of them fight against it all in the name of “safety”. There are so many current day examples of the left wing authoritarianism that it’s a little funny when people only point to the right as being authoritarians. I don't know much about this actress and the whole snow white ordeal, I gave up on disney and their politics long ago. I am just speaking in regards to this movie. It stays very true to the book and is a great addition to the franchise. Both the actor who plays snow and the actress who plays lucy grey deliver powerful performances. I have to commend this team for staying true to Suzanne Collins book . Katniss and Peeta actually do have sex in the original series. It’s in the end of the last book where she has sex with him and then says “after” she tells him her loving him is ‘true’. The sex scene is literally one word in a sentence. It’s the part where she explains why she needs Peeta and his lightness more than she’s needs Gale and his rage. Katniss also comments more than once how Peeta creates a ‘pull’ in her which is easily an reference to sexual desire.

Whatever sexual relationship between Peeta and Katniss was only implied after they were married and in the fact of them having children. The rest of their relationship was built in shared trauma and being with someone who understands that trauma. I know the scene you're talking about at the end of the series and it leans much more heavily on romantic love and a sense of commiseration than a sexual need. The sexual nature of the book was not downplayed because there wasn't any except for the parts that Suzanne wrote to clearly allude to something sexual, like with Finnick and Johanna.

-Katniss ended the movie with freedom, a kid running around, a newborn on her arms, Peeta and the cat (point for the boys)

Calling Katniss Asexual? She admits herself she was too afraid and traumatized to even think about that stuff. When Gale was whining Katniss literally said that all she felt was fear, there wasn't room for anything else. Besides, it I had to describe Katniss' sexuality, it would be Demisexual. Only attracted to someone she has a deep and emotional connection with. Like Peeta. She never had that with Gale. He was a hunting partner, a friend. He pined like crazy for her, but her feelings for him were only ever loyalty. Personally, I feel like Katniss never really saw Gale as a potential partner, he just kinda forced himself into there and made the love triangle. Katniss only ever showed devotion to Peeta. Gale was too much for her. Too pushy, too violent, too angry. Peeta was safety and kindness. Katniss wasn't even able to let herself be fully open to love till after the Capitol fell. She didn't want kids at the start because of the Games. She didn't want to go through the fear and pain of her child being reaped so she just wasn't going to have kids. Had nothing to do with her sexuality, and everything to do with fear of the Games.

My Hunger Games phase fizzled out about a year before TBOSAS was released, but I still read it.
I can agree that Lucy Gray is the “anti-Katniss”, but not in terms of sexuality. For me, Katniss was more reactive while Lucy Gray was more proactive. Katniss made the choices she did because she felt forced to. Volunteer for the Games or watch her little sister die. Go back into the arena for the Quarter Quell or her family and close friends would die. Be the face of the rebellion or be the reason innocent people suffer and die.
On the other hand, we have Lucy Gray. She intentionally draws attention to herself by singing at her reaping and slipping a snake onto another girl. She puts on a show on purpose to win the support of the Capitol (the difference between her and Katniss is she didn’t have outside help).

To be fair, SNOW sexualizes Lucy in the book, which unfortunately makes that an unfortunate topic that the reader has to deal with. His narration is interesting in that it leaves you wondering how much of what is being shown is actually accurate vs how much is his skewed perspective over-exaggerating things. So there are scenes where Snow perceives Lucy as "leading him on", and the audience has to figure out whether she is actually doing that, whether she is doing it out of survival, or whether it is entirely Snow's perspective and Lucy is oblivious to what is happening.

I saw this article the other day and just rolled my eyes. Hollywood gonna Hollywood, after all. But I LOVE the point the girl in the video makes, that we only ever "see" Lucy Gray through Snow's eyes, so her overt sex appeal may have been exaggerated. That's something I hadn't thought of before. And yes, Lucy Gray used her feminine wiles to survive (not just in the Games, but in life in general), but the whole point is that she was doing it to SURVIVE. She played up her talents, just like Katniss did, she just happened to have different talents. That's all. ALL District citizens did whatever they had to do to survive.

I never sat there reading those books thinking about their sexualities. Some people are bonkers. Why are people on the extreme ends so loud? Oh I also don’t bother with fictional characters ages. I don’t have the time or energy to pretend that an imaginary character can be a victim. I separate reality and fiction. No imaginary character has real trauma. No imaginary character is a real victim. Sometimes people say wild things like “maybe character B acted like that because they had a trauma response from seeing their teddy bear burn in a fire”. My response to that is “or maybe this fictional character was written like that to move the plot”. Like some people have gone wild with this. They’ll diagnose fictional characters with very real disorders with their arm chair degree in psychology. They’ll also boil down the disorder to the most minute unrealistic thing because they don’t know how a disorder actually develops. Idk when this started but it really needs to stop.

I have not read songbirds and snakes and I have not read the article referred to in the video, but I might have a slightly different interpretation. Rather than referring to the sexual attraction or preferences of these characters, the terms “asexuality” and “sexuality” may be referring to their behavior tendencies. Yes, both Katniss and Lucy are 100% female, but Katniss really doesn’t have much that is feminine about her and it seems as though (just conjecturing here) Lucy is obviously more feminine in contrast. That’s my hot take. 😉

I read the Hunger Games before it was super popular. Sex? Nope. The closest they got was...
Peta was sleeping in Katnis's room with her because she was having horrific nightmares. This might look like sex, but very clearly it was just him being the only person in the world who was treating her like a human being and being there to comfort her. Nightmares as described are very real. What might be more disturbing still is that Katnis never goes into too much detail about any specific nightmare. The important part is having someone with you to assure you it was only a dream while you're still half asleep and having the panic attack.
Peta later publicly tells everyone that they secretly got married and now Katnis is pregnant. This was a survival tactic, and literally nothing more. It has been determined that the legit best way to win the Hunger Games is to be the most interesting tribute, therefore getting the maximum number of viewers glued to the screen. The people holding the keys to the arena have no problem just up and murdering problematic tributes. The slight problem the rest of the country had with the Games was that the participants were children, but there were age limits... suggesting that an unborn baby was going into the ring kinda gave the people of the Capitol a taste of that, like 'Hey, shouldn't there be a rule against this?' From that point on, all the viewers will be rooting for Katnis to win, which would save both her and the life of her imaginary child. The judges would be practically forced to have her win.
