The Reason Behind Hunting | Short Film

I hope this short film brings light and perspective to the practice of hunting. Granted, I know not every one feels the same way and I'm sure I didn't list every answer there is to what hunting means to everyone, but I hope this resonates with you and shines light on a percentage of why some people hunt. "I have always had a pit in my stomach when someone asks me “why do you hunt” or “what does hunting mean to you”. It’s one of the most loaded questions that can be asked. There’s a pressure to try and meet the prodding question, anxiety in trying to find a cool quick response and hesitance in my words when trying to appease the politically correct.
The truth is, hunting doesn’t fit a single response. It doesn’t match a singular lifestyle and it doesn’t fall under a specific political agenda- because hunting is a natural practice that we all come from along the lines of our heritages.
At its core, hunting provides us with the food to live. It’s the last piece in the puzzle of the circle of life; from death comes existence. Surrounding that nucleus are culminations of euphoric and spiritual passages that we all experience differently that creates the journey and love of hunting.
I’ve never felt gratification from taking the life of an animal, but I have found satisfaction in reaping the rewards of my efforts. All the work, all the preparation, and all the hours spent in the field are pieces to the effort and pieces that help encapsulate the love of hunting. Hunting is a challenge.
The equipment doesn’t matter, the camo fashion show doesn’t matter, and looking cool for social media doesn’t matter. They don’t build a relationship with the wildlife, a woodsmanship with our surroundings and it doesn’t forward the longevity of being a hunter. Hunting is a relationship.
The journey we take every time away from the industrial world is part of what makes hunting special. Man made pressures melt away, anxieties begin to dissipate and peace begins to flow from the atmosphere. Hunting is spiritual.
Hunting isn’t purely survival based like it was for our ancestors. Though, the sustenance provided by our hands is a treasure so many do not know. Not to hunt is to remove one’s self from the responsibility that they ultimately carry and to not recognize the consequences that they inflict daily. Hunting is accountability.
Hunting is spiritual, peaceful, challenging, enlightening and grounding. It’s where bonds are made with family and friends. It’s where we witness wildlife being wild. It’s where we learn the responsibility we have within the animal kingdom and it’s where we can witness the beauty of God’s creation. Hunting is enlightening.
The kill is only a minute moment in the full culmination of the hunt, but it’s the one item that keeps life in perspective. Death will always come, whether it’s from my hands or from the fangs of other natural and barbaric circumstances. Hunting is a responsibility.
The consequences that follow the prey’s death, ground us in our place in life as the fulcrum in the balance of nature and gives us the nourishment that was intended. Death gives us the appreciation of life and gratitude towards the animal. Big antlers and other inconsequential bragging rights are nothing, but that. Hunting is perspective.
Hunting is more than pulling a trigger or letting an arrow fly. It’s more than a split moment decision. It’s more than just self preservation. It’s more than just spending time clearing your mind or creating happy memories with friends and family.
Hunting is a journey that gives us everything. It’s a journey of self reliance. It’s a journey of conservation and responsibility. It’s a journey of compassion and understanding. It’s a journey of fellowship. It’s a journey of challenges and victories. Hunting is an unrestricted personal journey of innate complexities that gives us life. Hunting….is a journey and that’s what I love about it. "
