The Chinese EVs are improving and their sales growth reflect this. However, there are two major differentiators from Tesla that they show no signs of progress. These are Tesla OTA (over the air updates) and FSD (full self driving capability). Teslas are designed from the ground up for ALL features to be controlled by software. Tesla has essentially converted all switches/controls/information to electronic/software operation rather than mechanical operation. Think about it, everything in the car is electronically controlled - electric motor controls, brakes, steering (a la Cybertruck) coming soon for all models, seats, windows, climate control, infotainment, communications, on and on. Of course this electronic architecture is essential for FSD. And of course FSD will be the ultimate safety feature. Human drivers cause thousands and thousands of accidents, injuries and deaths each year. FSD development is very rapidly developing and is now being approved in China for ordinary use by Tesla owners. Testing in the US is demonstrating less than 1 (one) human intervention in a normal driving year and improving rapidly. No vehicle manufacturer on the planet is even close to developing these two essential elements for their products.

@@basicincome549 Absolutely! I get legacy auto clinging to ICE, especially hybrids (AKA fake EVs), and if smart, using those sales to bridge to BEVs, but not to waste more money on developing marginally better ICE engines.
Ford is losing like $5B per year on their BEV business. Let's say VW averages $10B in losses per year (knowing this will not be even YOY - hopefully lowering loss per car as they go, but increasing volumes will increase losses). That gives them 6.5 years of runway if they spend this money on BEVs, not new ICE engines. That times nicely for 2030, when 80-90% of all new cars will be BEV, and they could start making money on them. This doesn't account for the losses of ICE sales over that time though - which is to say, they are fucked, anyway.

Why does Mercedes and VW way forward is so clear to all in the comments and not to them??
Retool the ICE companies to make EV cars, massive investment,
Make deal with Tesla for the charging network, but include the charging stations YOU will add to it.
Start retooling some of the companies to make Semis, and use all the Tesla copyright patents you can. Don't try to reinvent the wheel, improve on these if you can
Start investing on battery tech so you dont depend too much on others for it, again use Tesla's patents Elon is willing to share to build good long distance batteries.
Ten years later, you become profitable, ride the mistakes of not making these moves 10-15 years ago.
Elon has to work on many DIFFERENT companies and products, you only have to become good at EV cars.
