- Hey, you found a secret!
Okay, no you didn't, but here's a game that's been on my mind for quite some time now. I had recently experienced this game for the first time on the PC, and saw that the Nintendo 64 port had minimal amounts of footage around CZcams, so I figured I'd go ahead and fix that! This is a fun, though really brutal at times, racing game made by Midway in 1999 for arcades, with this port releasing a year after. This isn't the best version around, but it does have the unique trait of being the only home version of the game to support 4 player multiplayer (however, I may advise against playing it that way -- it turns into Hydro Molasses with four people thanks to the excessive lag).
Note: I must apologize about the really bad lighting on this video. In some tracks like Nile Adventure it's near impossible to see in places; sadly, this happened on the capture level and I wasn't able to fix it in post. Trust me when I say this looks a lot better than this video makes it out to be.
All failed attempts were edited out so this video looks like a perfect straight run through.
Stage-by-stage comments
Easy courses: So, I'll just admit, for the earlier courses I didn't bother getting first place if I still reached the completion requirement. The first three courses really are nothing special; my apologies if I missed any secrets or shortcuts on these courses.
Medium Courses: Again, not much to say.
Expert Courses: NY Disaster and Ship Graveyard took several tries for me to be able to do well. Since coming in first is mandatory on these courses, you absolutely have to take all the shortcuts.
Bonus courses: Nearly all of these except Nile Adventure gave me some sort of trouble, especially Castle Von Dandy. I had one almost-win on the latter but was overtaken at the very last second, hence the presence of another score by me on the high score list.
After all that is finished, I went ahead and showed off some gameplay of each of the four bonus boats (and also showed one of the shortcuts I missed). These boats aren't particularly great for actually playing competitively but they're a nice bonus reward.
Enjoy the walkthrough! - Hry
You're the ONLY person that didnt skip the intro "HYRDO THUNDER" and i'm glad
So much nostalgia. Used to play this as a kid and just having fun crashing into the other boats as fast as possible, not even caring about winning the race lol.
lol that was me on F Zero X
Played the hell out of this game as a kid. Never could beat Venice Canals to unlock the bonus levels despite my best efforts so I wound up selling the game years ago. Recently bought the Eon Super64 adapter that really makes all my old games look superb and I'm sure Hydro Thunder would be no exception. I'm seriously considering buying it again. Probably still can't beat it lol.
I didnt manage to get the hard section :( I woud be stuck on medoum forever with my bro
My uncle is the only one who opened the hard levels :D he was a good player
@@achrafelbadre4098 The audio from the PC version.
I have the same adapter. In fact, I bought two, even though the retrotink is similar and less expensive, the sheer convenience of the eon super64s capability without a power input is worth an extra 5 cents every time I play my N64, especially when taking it places, so it was worth it to me. I don't collect for any other consoles which would use the retrotink.
Lol
You should try the pointy speedboat, it's the best handling one.
This game reminds me of the Daytona USA series. In fact, I used to play Daytona USA 2 at Chuck E. Cheese's when I was a kid.
Oh man, I didn't even know this had an N64 port!
Yeah I didn't even know they had an N64 Port either but looking at this it was very close to the Dreamcast version aside from resolution it is sad though they don't make games like this anymore now it's all about loot boxes paying for characters and bullshit fun games are gone nothing but Graphics Ray tracing and a bunch of other bullcrap
I owned a copy of this for the N64! I can faintly remember playing this in the arcades my late father used to take me to. The N64 copy of Hydro Thunder came in a distinctive blue cartridge. This was so much fun to play, even when I felt a bit frustrated with the difficulty (at the time). Hydro Thunder Hurricane for my XB1 is great, but nothing screams nostalgia like the original!
Alon Of Israel Granted... I'm happy that developers are bringing such high fidelity into games. Been looking forward to playing Control and TLoU on a PS5 (my gaming habits shifted to Xbox for awhile).
As for those stupid "loot boxes," pay-to-play BS... Yeah. It's really hard to find games these days that don't nickel & dime you even after you purchase your game.
@@ElderStatesman The N64 looks like being downgraded from the PC version.
@@TangerineWallaby343 It is because of older hardware especially on cartridge
Kinda sad you didn't use all the boats, but thanks for uploading all the tracks
Used tyo play this with my son when he was younger-such nostalgia-the N64 was a good console.
Ah yes. I remember playing Hydro Thunder on my PlayStation 2. The Nintendo 64 version is cool too, and the Off Road Challenge Game is my favorite from the early 2000’s. I like Cruis’n World, and the N64 version is awesome, and the arcade versions are okay.
man i played this back on playStation!! forgot about this
World driver championship. That's what I was thinking of!
Classic Midway arcade game…
Dem good old days
Buckle up, Franky! This one’s gonna hurt!
Nostalgic 😭
The N64 version requires the expansion pack for 3 and 4 player multiplayer and to allow for an increased resolution.
How do you do that jump in the first course??
Jumping is kinda flaky in this game, but to do it you have to push the brakes and then immediately afterwards push the boost button. It's really hard to pull off consistently and doesn't always seem to work but it's a very crucial tactic for later courses.
Not sure what it was but I was able to dominate with Banshee. I just beat the game on my steam deck using control configuration 2. Made the game much more enjoyable to play. But Venice was still a total pain to beat.
Nice
Love
Hi. I just started playing N64 games again. I want to play 3 and 4
players in Hydro Thunder with my nieces and nephews but in 3 and 4
player mode you can't see the boats that you are racing with and it
makes racing really confusing to navigate. can you confirm this and do
you know a way around it?
Sadly the 3-4 player mode locks you into first person view, presumably to keep the polygon count down. I don't believe there is an option to go to third person view either.
@@MrEightThreeOne Well darn. Thanks for the reply. Have a good one.
I guess my childhood copy was glitched because the guy would say "narrow pass ahead" twice back to back. Kinda like 41:28
How do you make the boat jump
Hit the brakes and immediately after hit the boost button. It's a bit flaky and may take you several tries.
Te falto agarrar el turbo bost que se enuentra arriba en la lancha que esta colgando en la primera carrera.
English.
@@califaern3sto
You need to grab the turbo boost that is up on the boat that is hanging in the first race.
@@PulgaPulgon ok now I understand
I have not played a video game in almost 20 years. Trying to figure out which one to get. Pound for pound, I think it will be Nintendo 64. There are at least 10 games I know I like with this system. Super Mario Sunshine was my favorite game ever but it's the only one I remember ever playing on Game Cube so I think 64 is the way to go for me. They had a world car race game I loved but don't remember the name. Some tracks were Rome, Kyoto. Anyone know?
Crusin series
World Drivers Championship
@@sharifsingletary6710 Yes, that's the one.
@@tonybarnett1158 , The visuals on this is incredible, In my opinion, It's the best looking driving game on Nintendo 64
How do you boost start ?
It's really complicated. Before the countdown starts, you have to be hold the boost button. Then when the 3 starts to fade, let go of boost and hold accelerate. Switch back to boost when 2 fades, then go back to accelerate when 1 fades and you're good.
Mr. Eight-Three-One thanx bro i got it
I just hit the gas on 1 before go
What a beautiful game🎮🥹
How do you jump in this game?
It's a bit flaky. You need to use the brakes and then immediately after hit the boost button (you need boost to be able to pull it off). It's not especially reliable but that's how it's done.
Okay.
The only problem I had with the N64 port was how slow everything was. If played on an emulator it bumps the frame rate up
A lose cart of this game is raising on value
I have the grey cartridge which is supposedly more expensive than the blue one
Why is the n64 so slow
I think it's primarily a result of backporting a game originally made for arcades and a Dreamcast. The arcade version used hardware that was way more akin to 6th gen consoles (a 333MHz computer running a Quantum3D video card), so there were simply going to have to be compromises putting it on a 5th gen platform no matter what. I think the slowness comes from them trying really hard to make sure it still looked as close to the arcade version as it reasonably could, even if it meant the performance couldn't be as top-notch. I know the water effects are particularly taxing on the hardware, and I also know the N64 doesn't do RAM super great either -- those are two possible factors.
From a general perspective, it depended on if the developer was more concerned about performance or looks. Nintendo's own games usually ran without lag of any sort, while Rare was pretty well known for pushing the hardware to its limits and their games almost always are filled with lag because of it.
Mr. Eight-Three-One I noticed on Greek Isles during the final high drop, the n64 shows a very pretty Greek blue with patterns on the bottom of the canal. @12:18 minutes. This I did not see at the Dreamcast version... was that originally also in the arcade?
@@Kapojos I have no idea. I do have some arcades local to me with this game though so if I get a chance to find out, I'll let you know!
Mr. Eight-Three-One oh im sorry, I checked the Dreamcast again, and it is there! But it’s less clear and darker, I guess thats why I never noticed... that’s cool you have the arcade near! Would like to see if the Dreamcast version is really the same as the arcade.
@@Kapojos Yep, actually there's two arcades near that have Hydro Thunder cabinets! And another one if I'm willing to drive a bit farther. Sadly, only one of them has a pair (for two players), the rest are singles.
From what I can tell, yeah, it's mostly the same thing. The home ports do have a few extra tracks though, and the extra tracks are a lot easier to unlock -- in the original, you have to win several races in a row, or if you didn't get first, you can throw in more quarters to keep going (though, most of the arcades near me are set to free play so this isn't a big deal, but obviously it was when it first came out). The arcade version also doesn't have the bonus boats.
In general, the arcade version is a lot harder too. I think it took me almost five tries on Thunder Park to win, where I can usually do it in only a few attempts on the home ports. I think most of that comes from the fact that using a steering wheel makes it way harder to turn on a dime, and doing a jump is way harder when using your brakes means throwing the throttle backwards quickly instead of just pushing a button. Far as the visuals go, the arcade version seems to look a little bit nicer than the Dreamcast port, but I've never quite been able to lay my finger on why. However, it's not that big a difference -- the DC port is simply the closest the game ever looked to the original at home.
cagaram no jogo c esse excesso de fases noturnas q n da p enxergar e atrapalha a diversão , poderia ser um jogo muito melhor se não fosse isso
Too much water. 4/10
