From what I understand, a virgin relaxer is supposed to applied mis shaft first, about a half inch away from the scalp. Once the whole head is done like that, You go back to do the roots (they process fast because of the heat from our heads) and then pull the product down to our ends (which also process fast as they are the oldest and most fragile parts of our hair.) Then You smooth it. When I was relaxed, I used to use a wide tooth comb and then a Denman brush to aid in smoothing but I know that's generally frowned upon because it increases the risk of unnecessary breakage.
And an adult relaxer should've been used for this. The way this was done will preserve alot of health for her hair, but a corrective relaxer would probably be needed if she doesn't still want to deal with afro like texture when maintaining at home.

It may be able to be corrected with a kiddie relaxer just focused more on the midshaft and ends since You started with the roots. The important thing is that she's happy with it and can maintain it well at home in between visits.

Never relax edges until the very end . That hair is too delicate. Never comb relaxer through the hair.
