How the Hell you get lucky 5 times in a row over nothing but champs? Jiri had 3 fights and got a title shot. Chandler 1 fight, got title shot. ALL former Champions get pushed and Poaton was former double champ. All the current content creator’s coping so hard after boosting Hill like some god before the fight and then after the fight, the bs excuses are embarrassing. Jan was considered a good grappler, had just went to a draw with Ankalea and smothered Izzy. Jiri wrestled well against Glover but loses to Poaton and then fans call him washed. Most are baffled by the fact Poaton only needs to strike to win at mma and are butt hurt because the strangle hold wrestlers have had on the sport for years is phasing out. I think wrestling is the best base to start with, as it gives you that 2nd option when the striking isn’t working and completely changes the feel of the fight. Guys like Silva, Adesanya, Whitaker, etc proved that high level strikers can be successful as long as their Takedown defense is on point. That and being able to get up and/or keep yourself safe while on the ground is paramount obviously. The way the sport evolves so fast this could be expected☝️🤔

Neither middleweight or light heavyweight are known for having strong grapplers in this era. The best wrestler at middleweight when Pereira was climbing the rankings was Derek Brunson (who would've gotten smoked by poatan). At light heavyweight the best wrestler is Ankalaev and he will be next in line for the title shot.

To be honest, he doesn't really need a good ground game as long as he a very solid takedown defense and ability to get back on his feet. That's how it has been for some fighters who are strikers (Max Holloway, Conor McGregor, Israel Adesanya, Stepen Thompson, etc). Unless there's a relentless high pace wrestler in those divisions, I don't see Pereira having much trouble, I'm not sure Ankaleav will be enough, the only way I see him having a hard match is if Chimaev gets there in time in rankings, or if DC comes out of retirement lol

Ankalaev would be an interesting matchup for Pereira, although Ankalaev would have to adjust his game plan compared to his fights against Walker/Blachowicz and get the takedown early in the fight instead of standing and trading.

Casuals aren't ready to hear the reality. I love watching Alex fight, but denying the fact he hasn't fought any good wrestler who is disposed to take the fight to the ground is dumb. But I have to say that's not Alex's fault, he does what he needs to do to finish a fight. I don't know if it's arrogance in some cases or this warrior mentality in Jiri's case, but they all want to finish him where he's at his best, they all want to trade punches with someone who's levels above them and that's being dumb. Someone who wants that win does what's in his power for that belt, that's why Jones took Gane to the ground, that's why Georges submitted Bisping, that's why Miesha Tate choked out Holm...trying to trade punches with Alex like you're better is being disrespectful to his martial artist journey and your own journey. Getting your BJJ black belt immediately after starching a striker is wild, but I have a ton of respect for Glover Teixeira, so I have no doubt that Pereira earned that belt on the mats, not just because of his performances in the Octagon. If Pereira destroys Ankalaev despite being tested on the ground, there will be no more arguments about Pereira's legitimacy as a true mixed martial artist (not that there are many arguments now).
Alex said in interviews that was Glover that insisted on him not trying to fight on the ground, saying that it was to late in his carreer to change his focus. I think that is sound advice. Alex struggles with td defense, but has shown that he can defend himself on the ground.
Mma is more about anti-BJJ right now. That's why nowadays you mostly see submissions after damage has been done on the feet or through wrestling and ground n pound
as the sport has evolved striking > wrestling > bjj. wrestlers can still spam takedowns but without strikes on grounded oponents they cant really finish the fight. so the striker wins on damage.

It's basically knowing how to defend the initial attack and how to get up, BJJ isn't great at keeping people down since the fight always takes place on the ground. These days you need superior wrestling to keep them there and/or do damage first and finish with BJJ

The UFC definitely pushed him to the top to get the money fight with Adesanya. But after that, he’s fought nothing but killers, regardless of wrestling, they were not easy matchups. I guess you could call him lucky for being at the top of LHW when good wrestlers are scarce

I don't think you can say luck wasn't a factor at all in terms of him rising so quickly up the UFC's ladder. But that's mainly in terms of circumstances surrounding his fights like his great storyline with Izzy leading to his Middleweight Title win and his subsequent parlaying of that championship win into jumping into the highly unstable Light Heavyweight Title picture. As for the fights themselves, he's won pretty much all of them fair and square. Not his fault that his opponents think they can stand and trade with him for some reason.
Something that fighters that are fast tracked in the UFC have in common is that they needed to do incredible things beforehand.
Look at what Alex, Brock, Ronda, Silva, and Serra had accomplished before their title fights.
There are a few others, like Chael Sonnen who had 3 fights before fighting for the belt against Anderson.
Vitor Belfort had 1 fight before fighting for the belt against Anderson.
Chandler had 1 fight before fighting for the belt against Charles.
Jiri had 3 fights before fighting for the belt against Glover.
But for some random reason people never cared about them being fast tracked, but all got jealous when Alex got fast tracked.
