Thank you, Frances. I appreciate the prayers. We are surrounded by good and generous people and we have a plan to move forward. It'll be almost a month before the rebuilding will commence. Stay tuned!
Keep the ol' head up. Your equipment will be back to full by the end of the year. One common denominator I have noticed after watching all these you tubers is when people get to the numbers they want they stop splitting so hard and then start having heavy loses and poor productivity of Queens. So that being said those frequent brood breaks and newer queens could be the key. When your new and splitting and splitting and splitting, things are just fresh. But I have no doubt you will be swimming in bees by the end of the year, and come out of winter great next year. Also maybe have some experimental colonies to leave out next winter, let them ride and see how the pop out on the other side. Thanks for sharing Brad your still a champ in my books.

Wow, so so sorry. Two years back to back. I truly feel bad. There are so many factors to beekeeping that make or break us and the bees' survival. Last season in May, I cooked 70 nucs on the truck over night, they were so hot the wax melted, honey ran out the tailgate on the ground. I just about lost my mind when I saw the loss. I had a very bad day cleaning up the mess, and it still bothers me when i think about it. It was totally my fault. Then, in August, I starved a nuc yard with 90 colonies, I managed to selvage them, but the population didn't rebuild going into fall. I just opened up that nuc yard yesterday to see what survived the winter. 40 dead and the other 50 small enough to be called dead, only two of those 50 look great. It happens. We just need to find the strength to try again. I know hearing about my loss doesn't make your loss any easier. I was debating posting a video of my loss, but after seeing your courage, I think I will. Thanks for posting.

Oh no! I saw the video and was excited. Now I’m bummed. I’m really feeling bummed with you. You are 100% correct on the mites and such. Turning a blind eye to the mites and generalizing the blame to pesticides which is easily remedied is something I see in our club all the time and it frustrates me. I don’t care who treats or doesn’t and with what you treat with. I don’t argue with any of that because bees are the responsibility of the beekeeper. People can do what they gotta do, not for me to tell them. But for goodness sakes quit trying to make me deny the mites folks. Know your enemy and fight how you choose, but the enemy is still present. I feel so bad for you Brad. I feel you when you say you aren’t sure you can handle it. But with some time and thought, you’ll figure out a plan in some way, shape, form, or fashion. Something else here. Viewers that are beekeepers can relate to a lot of this, but one thing not all can relate to is what the stress is of the loss coupled with you going forward with this video. As a video creator, these are the hard videos. We know we have an audience and we know we must go forward, but it’s hard to show the bad times. It’s an added layer of stress. Take a break and gather your thoughts brother and we’ll wait patiently as you figure out the path forward. This is your livelihood and I know it weighs on you. I will be in prayer for you for the wisdom you need to move through this. I literally mentioned in an upcoming EFB video of the challenges you and Ian had only a year or so ago and how it is a time that we are concerned for you guys when you have to deal with this kind of thing. We here are mostly hobbyists and sideliners who watch you, not depending on every aspect of the operation. But as I mentioned, we adapt and overcome as you’ve done in the past. How that will look this time and the path forward, we don’t know, but we are hopeful.
Mike I so agree that it’s hard when you guys post the videos with the bad times..but the good thing about posting is that you realize how much support you have from others who know what your going through!! We got all you guys!! Brothers & Sisters in Christ and bees!! 💕💞

I am very sorry for your winter losses. I think the reason is a mites. You mentioned that you noticed the resistance of the amitraz. The year before last, at the apiary where I worked then, towards the end of summer, we noticed that there was a very high level of mites, although we used apivar in the spring. We sent the bees for testing and the laboratory revealed resistance to amitraz. We treated with formic acid and oxalic acid in the fall, but it was too late. In the spring, losses were about 50%.
And yes, our statistics over the last ten years show that outdoor wintering has always shown significantly better results than indoor. Personally, I winter all my hives outdoor, even 6 framers, but they are all double. Wintering results are always better than those of my former boss indoor.

WOW there is nothing I can really say about this. It is like we take one step forward and two steps back. The people or it may have been your bee inspector Ian uses to come in to do testing for all kind of things is there anyway you could get that done to just give you a idea on what direction to start with. Your not in this alone, seems there is high loss counts all over. I checked mine last week and lost 38 of my 45 i went into winter with. Its a hard blow but keep faith and yoy will come out in the end.

Brad, that is rough and words can't help heal but hopefully they encourage. You have a ton of resources there and great knowledge. You will figure out what you need to change and it will be better. Those blasted mites make raising bees so much harder than it should be. Did the apitablets seem to help? I'm wondering OA sponges or the apitablet maybe one idea to consider. Brad, you can do this one step at a time one day at a time. Best wishes and prayers.

Aww,Brad, i feel for you. 3 years ago, i lost 92% , had to take a small loan out to buy replacement nucs. That was one tough season.

Reminds me of the time running a construction company, we ran out of money. We decided we had to close the business. As I was leaving our meeting, a check dropped out of the check register for 4k, I had forgot to deposit it! It was just enough to pay the bills. Good luck

I understand that your on the whole different side of the continent from me, however I had a good amount of loss this year as well. It was double, almost triple what I normally would have. However, Being mine were not indoor, I know they died between the end of January, Start of February. Being that we had such a warm winter, and mine kept flying, in my case they died off with the lack of feed. Yours being inside, I would assume it would keep them from flying and not needing so much feed. Im sure that you will figure out what killed some of them, and build back better than what you had to start with. Might not be able to get 100+ of them this year out of the 13 left, but it is possible to build them back. Sorry for your losses!

I guess wintering indoors you would see bee death. We have done outdoors and we've seen about 95% loss but none died. They all absconded in the fall. About 90-95 colonies down to 3. No signs of dead bees at all. Mite counts were done and there was 0-2 mites per 300 bees so can't blame mites (Still treated in September). We did have extremely thick smoke for about 2 months in the spring from forest fires which lead to swarming all season which we struggled to stop.
Statistically speaking, there is no significant difference between indoor and outdoor winter mortality.

Sorry to hear Brad, I was hoping it was just the few that you checked earlier in the year. I have had high losses in the past and it's pretty discouraging . This is when MASC Winter Mortality Insurance really pays off, although expensive it has saved my operation a few times. 20 years this year and I'm still scratching my head in the spring as to what killed some of my colonies. Except for the obvious " Starvation" is the only one I'm confident with my post winter assessments.

I'm sorry Brad. It pains me to see your situation. I just want to say that you deserve better, and better is coming. The losses don't represent you, it's an anomaly. You can grow bees and make honey! Map your path out of this, you can do it. You have what it takes, you know you do. Commit to the struggle, you will win.

to second another comment in here- I agree that splitting with brood breaks is, IMO, key to keeping them going. If you cant kill the mites with amitraz- you might have to just stop their ability to reproduce entirely.

Thank you, that got me thinking, and i found the video i posted here. I am really excited to try this method this year because i have no interest chemically treating bees. A bunch of nucs and mite removal too, sounds like a good deal. I am sorry to see the severe winter loss and I pray YAHUAH blesses your rebuilding this year. Maybe try out this "total brood removal" and see what happens. Thanks again for all your inspiration.
