I remember wanting to be a pro skateboarder as a kid, reading Thrasher magazine, cleaning debris out of empty swimming pools so we could skate in them in the off season months on the east coast. I had fun skateboarding and going to see the new decks at the skateboard and bicycle shops. I had an old school Powell Peralta Steve Caballero board with Independent trucks. Then a Planet Earth deck that was a cross between an 80's fish shape and modern nose shape. Then the 90's happened and they came and went so fast it's all just kind of blur now. Here it is almost 2020, my father's been passed away almost 2 years now. I'm now a father and I work for a living pay bills. Time sure does fly. Have fun while you're young, have fun while you're old.
The weird thing is, back in the day, we never had any internet, so I never got to see the actual style Hosoi had until the last 10 years or so. Only got to see pictures in Thrasher.
Man I feel blessed where I grew up in the late 80s. My fellow skaters and I had most all the videos back then because we had a couple people with two vhs machines. I owned quite a nice collection back then.
Good times was my 8th grade summer before HS, Gotcha Braclets, Batman Movie was out, the neon zinc sun screen sticks were the rage. T and C surf designs and Skate or die on Nintendo, Vision Street Wear, Gator, Thrasher Mag,low rider trucks with convertible tops, mtx 15s in the back, 2 Live Crew and high school girls... Damn good summer
Now wait just one darn minute here... Hosoi KILLED it, and was 1st, that was the best I ever saw Lance Mountain skate, and he was 2nd. Tony Hawk BAILED, although an A for effort, and he's our hero and all, but come on now.... you can even see that Tony was PISSED and dis-satisfied with his run, and I think even he would agree he didn't deserve the win on this one. CLASSIC, but I can see why people were always pissed about the politics of judging back in the day. I think the judging is a lot more technical now, although of course, politics still rules (Money, label whores, etc.)
That was incredible to see. 2024 and those guys are phenomenal. On that equipment it’s just ridiculous. Great style NEVER goes outta style. Thank you thank you thank you for that post!❤
Man I will never forget when the whole Powell Peralta Bones Brigade showed up at our skate park in Jacksonville, Fl (Kona) back in the day.. We were all stoked to say the least, those were great times back in the 80s-90s..
I didn't think I'd be this impressed by skating from over 30 years ago. Even after watching the most recent X games, this is still awesome to watch. Christian was soaring! Lots of huge airs and tweaked out grabs that you don't really see anymore. And can we bring inverts back? So many cool stylish tricks lost to the sands of time.
Hosoi, king of style... he's my favorite skater.... But Hawk deserved this. He was riding switch before anyone knew what this was. Really, truly amazing.
I saw all these awesome dudes skate at the L.A. or Anaheim convention center around 85-86. I vaguely remember it because I was only 12 or so. Skating ruled back then.
I actually think that Tony Hawk is a better skater now then he was back then. His riding is so fluid and stylish . Christian and Lance were freaking amazing to watch! I saw Hosoi skate recently and he is still incredibly awesome!
Hosoi was so ready for the olympics with those spandex bike pants. He must be so bummed he missed out on competing. Was on the forefront of skate jock style and personality.
You can't believe there's film of this event...and you've attended it? Lol. Really? Where have you been, man? This video was out back in 1989 and is called 'Gotcha Grind'. I remember playing this vhs nearly every day when it was out. Must have been insanely rad to see in person!
Charles Joseph -I was there too. I was just stoked to get to watch my heroes in person which was a rare treat up in Washington. I also remember an event at the Tacoma Mall with a handful of guys doing a demo on a vert ramp set up in the middle of the mall. Ah, the good old days.
This brings back some awesome memories, all these dudes were awesome, I had a few Mountain boards and saw him win a contest in Tahoe where he lit the tail of his board on fire.
But he lacked difficulty, conpaired to Tony in this run. Hawk did a good portion of his run switch had some of the same grabs but with additional rotation. And did a 720. I think they chose the right winner. But then again, it's all subjective.
TurtleDude05...”lacked difficulty”?? Seriously?? A 10 ft high lean method air, rocket air, the CLEANEST MCTWIST ever? He had the smoothest, most powerful & stylish run of all the contestants..(Hawk wouldn’t even argue those points). Yea, Hawk tried wider variety of tricks, but NOT with as much power or STYLE which is pretty much king 👑 in skateboarding.. Why you think Cab won so many street contests? Not because he had the weirdest/most innovative tricks (like Gonz), but bcuz he had style & stayed on his board thru the whole run.
@@GoldenAgeSk8Video I didn't say it wasn't difficult. Just that compared to the stuff Tony was throwing down it was a standard run, done really well. No switch or fakie tricks that I could see. Only 1 difficult spin. And while he had power, the last couple walls were pretty weak. And other skaters matched him in height. He did a good run really smooth. But all he had was some good grabs and one good spin, with plenty of style. Hawk was one of if not the only skater pulling a fakie 720. Not to mention that super high 360 where he brings himself to almost a full stop mid air. That kind of control is nuts and stylish as well. He was doing stuff nobody else was doing. If it was only about style, then Yes Hosoi wins that. But it wasn't. It's part of the reason current skate comps kinda suck. It's all about looking good, with little reward for creativity. Imo. I think Christian should have came in 2nd. But I don't think he should have won. But once again. All judging in sports is subjective. So to each their own opinion.
TurtleDude05..Ok, you’re more a trick guy vs style guy..Nor Cal vs. So Cal..Thrasher vs. Transworld..Indy vs. Tracker..Got it..Agree to disagree on this one. ✌️
I knew him mostly before he got busted. He was at the end of his career but was still a big player. We were friends for a while before his arrest but I had no idea how deep he was. I still refuse any exchange anything with that and that is how our lives turned out.
Hosoi had a great style and a classic style, lance was as smooth as butter, and Hawk got all the big techical tricks. Thats the thing with skating that some skaters have the style and are just good to watch
I actually think that Tony Hawk is a better skater now then he was back then. His riding is so fluid and stylish nowadays. Christian and Lance were freaking amazing to watch! I saw Hosoi skate recently and he is still incredibly awesome!
The looped cheering recording like a 1989 Basketball game sorta bothered me but these guys were giants back then.. Nice to see them 3 skating all together in this throwback
All these people saying Christian should’ve won. This run was literally THE SAME at every contest. He added a few new tricks like the Mc Twist and some lip slides after he realized he wasn’t going to win with just big air and style after ‘87-‘88. Not hating on him but Hawk was the reason so many of the vert tricks today even exist. If ANYBODY GOT ROBBED at a vert contest in the 80’s, it was Chris Miller or Jason Jesse.
Hosoi got robbed!! That was the beginning of marketing hawk as the greatest and you can’t do that if he doesn’t win.. All sick runs but clearly Hosoi killed it.
Hosoi killed it for sure, politics in the way. Props to Tony Hawk, though you don't win medals trying? Practice is for home, when you come to the show you gotta have a run.
Tony was technical and was even criticized for being "Robotic" in his skating but Hosoi had style and flair in his skating and HUGE airs no ONE could match Hosoi on high airs he just flowed like water..Be water my friend...BL
At the end of this Gotcha Grind video Steve Schneer (RIP) ramp builder himself said: “Hosoi should have won, but judging is sketchy like that i guess..”

Exactly..........it's not like I got to stream videos of this on my Commodore 64 and then my dads Amigas on our 14k dial up modem!!!
Same here... first saw actual footage on the Rising Sun Documentary around '08 or so. It blew my mind to see those gigantic airs in motion!
Bro, they had videos.
Hosoi was raw!!! And flawless, I think Christian should have won and I love tony. They were all better than the guys now in terms of trick after trick
Man I feel blessed where I grew up in the late 80s. My fellow skaters and I had most all the videos back then because we had a couple people with two vhs machines. I owned quite a nice collection back then.
hosoi killed it. smooth af, like he wasnt trying
He got jobbed! Complete shredding and didn't win?
Hosoi just had a different vibe this era...so smooth
Style!!
He was stylin thru the air with so much confidence.
Meth was good
Fuck Lance's run was by far my favorite for style and difficulty.
👊
That handplant to fakie was crazy
Am I the only one who thinks vert skateboarding was much sicker back then ?
I don't know, but maybe people get desensitized and used to all the content you can find on CZcams now.
No one will ever have the style of Christian hosoi
Hosoi is such a talent and skate with a pleasing style.. So ahead of time.. definately a Big Star in the skate scene...attention is always on him. 👍
Wow Soundgarden in 89
SpaceOrbison well the competition was in Seattle.
That's all I was thinking
:37 Soundgarden or Sound Garden?
@@indiglo1971 It makes sense that since they weren't well known at the time that Soundgarden would be playing events like skateboarding contests.

The old school Sound Garden makes this even more epic!
SOUNDGARDEN is DEAD!!!

From a skater from 1965 on a home made board riding my sisters roller skate wheels. Old school…. 😊
i rented this so many times i lost count. still riding 169 on 60s to this day. i wasnt going to skate today until i saw this
no one does these tricks anymore, i love this style, vert now is still awesome but i love this
So Awesome. I was established in 1990 missed this by a year. :) I love Skateboarding. ☮️

Christian Hosoi's run on this one is one of the coolest! And the Rest!
These kids were so ahead of the time with the Soundgarden in 1989! RAD!
This music makes me feel I'm playing THPS PlayStation games
hosoi has so much natural style
😎Hosoi's run was awesome 👍🏽
Hosoi is just so smooth.
Hosoi was so ready for the olympics with those spandex bike pants. He must be so bummed he missed out on competing. Was on the forefront of skate jock style and personality.
I had those Airwalk shoes that Tony Hawk rocked, man this brought back memories
So awesome. Skateboarding has no soul any more
Its alot more about technical style and tricks
Holy shit I can't believe there is film of this event. I was there! Hosoi's spandex back then were so much less obnoxious than today's skinny jeans!
They weren't less obnoxious, you were just less judgmental.

Tony was just on a whole different level than everyone else.
Who remembers Gleaming the Cube ? Wicked awesome movie 🛹📸🎬
Hosoi was untouchable then and routinely robbed by the judges in favor of Hawk who was of course great as well.
that Hosoi run was EPIC
He was dang good no doubt. Smooth. Made it look effortless. But hawk was pushing boundaries. Hark deserved the credit.

when I had a Lance Mountain Skateboard.
Powell Peralta RULEZ!
Powell Peralta was for commoners and beginners......many many better boards were available then.....never owned one....

Lance Mountain. Silky and smooth. The Zohan would approve.

LEGENDARY!

The Golden Age of skateboarding
Hawk did not fuck up , he pulled a switch stance from his regular "goofy foot" to regular , back to goofy . That is incredible !

Great song at the beginning...
Hear that? No trash mumble rap. Real music. The 80's/90s were the best.
Especially for skating
I didn't know switch was a thing back then. New respect for hawk.
Damn T. Hawk skating to Firehose, niiiiiice. Can't believe this took place thirty miles from my house. Too bad I was eight, booooooo.
Great oldschool skateboarding from Hawk, Hosoi, and Mountain back in the late 80's. Like the tune Head Injury.
Tony way ahead of his peers at a young age
