    Hi Emma, thank you for the lesson. I learned to write the reported speech from high school a long time ago; however, the teacher instructed us to convert the sentence in a rigid formula. I appreciated that you highlighted the exceptions which are very useful. For such a complicated or sometimes a confusing topic, you can articulate in 20 mins.     My examples:
    He told me not to eat fatty food.
    She asked me if I had tasted the food.
    They told her that the party had been a blast and they had enjoyed a lot.
    When I had cold she advised me to sip some herbal tea.
    They asked whether or not we were going to make a party.
    She wanted to know how many hours I had practiced for the exam.

      These are fabulous examples of reported speech, Sha!
      There are a couple of corrections related to other grammar points that I'll highlight:
      They told her that the party had been a blast and they had enjoyed *it* a lot.
      When I had *a* cold she advised me to sip some herbal tea.
      They asked whether or not we were going to *have/throw* a party.
