not sure if this helps or not but this area was VERY common in classic. not so much in xpan prolly due to people even going to look for it. but back when we played in classic we use to get this map everytime. it use to be the place to duel back in the day outside act 4 with the paladins zeal 6 socketed emeralds lol
Just made some quick search on google, and I found that some people found keys called "an evil force" during Countess runs. I read too that blizzard gave that name to objects in D2-programming when they don't get one. Maybe that key is the answer... or not
We need some hackers with some good ida pro skills or ollydbg skills to take a look at the windows and see if they have any alternate code paths behind them. I'm curious myself, but my thoughts are that if hackers haven't found this already, maybe there is nothing to the windows.
I'm playing Diablo 2 on and off for over 20 years and never had the luck to see that structure in Act 4. And finally it happened today. Playing D2R with my Sorceress which already has extremely good Andariel, Countess & Duriel Hell seeds and now the Cathedral has also spawned. 🥰
About that "secret area" it isn't very secret. Every "unreachable area" has a switch that can open it, but sometimes that switch is on an odd location and might take a time to find or not finding at all and people believe it is a secret area.

A guy showed me a secret with the Ancients in act 5 way back in 2004.He was friends with a dev and he did some trick that made the ancients drop items when they are defeated.This was a long time ago,but if you can find anything about this,it is another secret.
in the catacombs or any of the earlier levels I remember there was secret rooms with chest in it. like click a book shelf and the bookshelf would slide to the side. havent seen it in some years now tough. was around 1.10 when I saw it. Thoose areas was viewable on the map but there are no doors to them.
A few weeks back this zone spawned for me and I searched the internet far and wide for any hints as to what to do there. My first thought was that there was some kind of sequence to break the windows in, but I obviously didn't guess it. Probably some datamining could reveal if there are any codes connected to these windows. Btw, have you tried getting a Khalim's Will/Khalim's Flail from NM and coming back to Normal to break the glass with it? Just an idea.
obscure indeed. I strongly think that it was one of the 3 quests that they didn't bother putting in the game anymore. They clearly said that they rushed to get diablo 2 out in stores. I think it was just some boss sitting there or such. Maybe you had to destroy the windows since he only sits in the shadows. Who knows.
For the last one with windows, evil force is the name of the ghostly thing who cast nova in mephisto fight, also hell forge hammer is get after killing mephisto to destroy is souls tone, which is blue like the blue flash who appear on the character when he break the window
In Act 1, Cellars or Jails maybe there is a cell in the corner with a false wall you can click on to get into the cell, which just had a few chest in it I think
Someone taught me one the other day. If you teleport into town and spawn the cow level while teleporting sometimes it will bug and not allow anyone to enter or it will say something weird like "undefined" when you hover over the portal with your mouse.
i'm still thinking about getting into this area.... did you ever try to slay the EVIL FORCE windows with a Nature's Peace ring equipped? (Stat: Slain Monsters Rest in Peace) just an idea....

The messed up thing is, after watching a speedrun of a D2 character, I got the game again and made it to City of the Damned to check it out for myself. Never seeing this in the 15+ years I've been playing D2, I had to check it out. Lo and behold, there it was, this...upside-down cross-shaped place with breakable stained-glass windows. This area reminds me a little of the Cornerstone of the World, found in the Crypt Lv3 in D1/Hellfire...not sure if this are has a purpose, but if there'd be something you have to do to open up a gateway to a secret realm, that'd be the tits
I actually do remember these windows. If I remember correctly they actually damage you when breaking them. In this vid you can see he heals from them maybe through life leach or maybe the holy bolt?

You know the Salvation Aura ( Paladin ) actually depletes your mana orb, in very minute increments over a period of time. But there is no mention of it doing so in the skill tree. Go figure.
It's possible that you have to smack windows in correct order depending on its spawning position (facing right or left), but finding it out manually would be just pain in the ass. Call Metzen xD

I have played Diablo 2 for about 7 years. I sow the stained glass windows only ones in the City of the Damned, about 5 years ago. At that time I found it funny just to break the glass . I find it funny that other people put so much interest into that little detail. It feels like you will find this windows probably only once in a lifetime .....lol When I was playing Diablo 2 a few years ago in the battlenet with 7 other players we where droping gold coins in the Rogue Encampment (town act 1) allways one at a time. If you do that for a long time then the gold grows like a carpet and spreads even over the city wall. Unfortunately, I did not know how to take a screenshot back then so i cannot upload a picture :(
i do not know if it is patched but a long time ago i found a Secret in Act 1 i believe there is a lose wall that opens up i believe in the monastery of Act 1(beneath the catacombs, i believe) and it leads too one of the crypts in the burial grounds, i only found this secret once and it was a accident and a long time ago like during the release of Diablo 2 idk if they patched it or what but i can not seem too find it. :( if you do please inform me, it might be a rare encounter secret like the shatters, the secret opened up like a secret door to the jail cells but like i said it led too one of the crypts in the burial grounds. if you find it or have info on it please let me know, please? thanks.
There is an interesting glitch I've found in the game, when I used a sorc. If you go to Act 1, in the jail or catacombs. You can teleport behind a wall and into blackness. You can't much in this area, but it's a safe zone for some pvpers.
I have one with my Sorceress teleport. I can teleport just on the other side of the wall in the Monastery Barracks. I don't get very far. And the river of Flames, just off the path. I found this by accident. I am wondering if there any others in the game.

My biggest secret that I could I could never explain, these strange blue spheres that occasionally spawn in Baals throne room. Very very rare, probably 1 in 500 runs. I seem to remember it occurring during the act 2 wave of minions. Anybody else ever seen or figured these out?
Since i got lucky enough to recently have a cathedral spawn in my game I decided to try out killing izual inside of the cathedral in search of finding any easter egg related to it. Nothing happend sadly enough, but i think it was worth a try ^^
What about the secret rooms in the Jail? Showed it to a friend of mine and he had no clue they existed. Not that big of a secret area but quite fun thou if you do not know about them.
The hint of secret room is quit obvious. There is one type of secret room with railings that you can see gold inside. You may doubt that there is some hidden door so that not only sorceress can pick them up. Also the blood on the secret door is somehow obvious. Another type of secret room is less obvious but you will notice the bloody hidden door once you know it. The secret room is not a secret at all once you use maphack. Also Blizzard made a reference of this secret room in D3 (need RoS). Everyone who want to do set dungeon achivements "have to" know it.
Secret areas or ester eggs is a re glitch, shortcoming or bug as usual its happens in a dev process. Some of them gonna be unknown forever and only devs can remember them
other things that are weird are if you got to Abaddon, pit of Arceron, Infernal pit, your innovatory go's yellow just like when you go to Funace of pain to kill uber Izual (or other ubers areas). i no its the same map i wonder if its possible to tp to Funace of pain from the places above. the are 6 organs, the hero staff thing for killing ubers, sole stone, the horadric scroll, the gibin, helforge hammer, the act 1 hammer, the horadric staff and ammy, the flail, resist scroll and your ear. the possible combos are endless with the cube. best best is to get some one to looks at the code. they say the found a code they in single player you can make a rune word. also a bug but in single player if you click on a rune on your items and weapon switch fast enough you can get the rune out but cant put it down... seems to work best with tal set for some reason.
what about all those misc in hero editor which can be grab into game? What about the gate in outer coister ( down before getting in ) which is always guard by a champion monster I think their secret will always be unknow
I found one of these many years ago, didn't think much about it, maybe just sort of random generation. My friend claimed that you can recover gems from the "Evil Forces", but I guess it is not true, or purely random.
its been along time but i remember playing medianxl mod back in the day and breaking all the glass coincides with upgrading a uber boss drop item. break all the glass chuck item in cube in return upgrades the item. as for their actual purpose in unmodded know idea

I'm more of a casual Diablo 2 player but I didn't even realize this was a secret area! In my most recent play through it spawned for me and I just assumed it was a normal structure, now I feel kind of annoyed I didn't screenshot it or something :/
The only true "secret" that comes to my mind after playing this game for so many years are the elite rare ethereal weapons that have some insane damage bonus.
it's in act 3 where Mephisto is. if you use the 2d video option you can see were they are. you can die form them in hc. also in river of flame there's a fire ball the come out of the lava can do damage to you too. also i think diablos bone cage is and evil force too i think.
if you land the cow level portal outside the gates or bridge of the rogue camp you will spawn a no name level its unknown if this increases Rare loot drops but its believed to increase the chance of high poison damage charms to drop that's all i know
ok It has been a while so I am not certain of the crafting recipe its alot like the secret cow level where you place items in the herodric cube... only this secret level is insane difficulty! This secret level contains the 4 major end bosses to fight all at the same time.. only this time the bosses are on roids and regenerate health at an astounding rate! You have to farm secret cows until the item drops and then combine with wirts leg and TP scroll. GOOD LUCK! I adventually created a build to solo all 4 bosses (honestly get a group of friends to deal with the bosses) and there are 3 named charms involved that are seriously good.
I have aeen this cathedral once - the windows indeed are "an evil force" and can be broken, but this doesn't really cause anything special to happen. I wouldn't say it's a "secret" area - it's more of a rare occurrence within the game's randomized map layouts.
I read post where some ppl thought they could get gem shrine more often from it... I read a post for Blizzard saying that the gem works better than expected... I just think that the gem's been here to make ppl talk, and if it actually gives gem shrines... So what ?!

That used to be the go to dueling area in early diablo 2, btw dont forget about the secret chambers in catacombs.

Yeah you have to "blindly click" on the wall panel which makes it slide open.
Secret areas or ester eggs is a re glitch, shortcoming or bug as usual its happens in a dev process. Some of them gonna be unknown forever and only devs can remember them
other things that are weird are if you got to Abaddon, pit of Arceron, Infernal pit, your innovatory go's yellow just like when you go to Funace of pain to kill uber Izual (or other ubers areas). i no its the same map i wonder if its possible to tp to Funace of pain from the places above. the are 6 organs, the hero staff thing for killing ubers, sole stone, the horadric scroll, the gibin, helforge hammer, the act 1 hammer, the horadric staff and ammy, the flail, resist scroll and your ear. the possible combos are endless with the cube. best best is to get some one to looks at the code. they say the found a code they in single player you can make a rune word. also a bug but in single player if you click on a rune on your items and weapon switch fast enough you can get the rune out but cant put it down... seems to work best with tal set for some reason.
what about all those misc in hero editor which can be grab into game?
What about the gate in outer coister ( down before getting in ) which is always guard by a champion monster

I found one of these many years ago, didn't think much about it, maybe just sort of random generation. My friend claimed that you can recover gems from the "Evil Forces", but I guess it is not true, or purely random.

its been along time but i remember playing medianxl mod back in the day and breaking all the glass coincides with upgrading a uber boss drop item. break all the glass chuck item in cube in return upgrades the item. as for their actual purpose in unmodded know idea

I'm more of a casual Diablo 2 player but I didn't even realize this was a secret area! In my most recent play through it spawned for me and I just assumed it was a normal structure, now I feel kind of annoyed I didn't screenshot it or something :/
wtf i found this the other day and thought it was something that was always there, and that I never noticed it.
The only true "secret" that comes to my mind after playing this game for so many years are the elite rare ethereal weapons that have some insane damage bonus.

it's in act 3 where Mephisto is. if you use the 2d video option you can see were they are. you can die form them in hc. also in river of flame there's a fire ball the come out of the lava can do damage to you too. also i think diablos bone cage is and evil force too i think.

if you land the cow level portal outside the gates or bridge of the rogue camp you will spawn a no name level its unknown if this increases Rare loot drops but its believed to increase the chance of high poison damage charms to drop that's all i know
ok It has been a while so I am not certain of the crafting recipe its alot like the secret cow level where you place items in the herodric cube... only this secret level is insane difficulty! This secret level contains the 4 major end bosses to fight all at the same time.. only this time the bosses are on roids and regenerate health at an astounding rate! You have to farm secret cows until the item drops and then combine with wirts leg and TP scroll. GOOD LUCK! I adventually created a build to solo all 4 bosses (honestly get a group of friends to deal with the bosses) and there are 3 named charms involved that are seriously good.

just if you make sure that you got 3 socket on it and put your forge Q runes in it: then you get THE answer.
You can't imbue Wirt's leg, because it is made of wood. You can only imbue metal items.

in fact wirts eg with this enchant makes for a quite good weapon, with the sox and everything
so there is no secrets after all )
I have aeen this cathedral once - the windows indeed are "an evil force" and can be broken, but this doesn't really cause anything special to happen.
I wouldn't say it's a "secret" area - it's more of a rare occurrence within the game's randomized map layouts.
