The blonde in the front left and in green is my sister Beverly Jones, whose life was taken from her at a very early age of 18 on Christmas night after performing at a nite club while singing in a band called "Elizebeth" She has surely been missed throughout the years by all the Upbeat Dancers and family and friends. We Miss You!
Yes, it's kind of kick-ass, but not in an agressive way. To my mind this song fits much better with the wild, free-flowing stax sound than with smooth, overproduced motown.
No wonder Edwin has that huge smile with these beautiful on stage with him. I'm from Cleveland and recognized this as the Upbeat show immediately. Didn't Dick Blake show us dance steps every week. Remember our clapping? Sway left and right in audience clapping and twisting left hand clap then right hand? I wanted to be one of those dancers. Anyone remember The Rationals on Upbeat? My dad took us to Chipewa Lake to see them. One of there recordings was "Respect". I miss it all so much.
Uriel Jones played in this track. It was recorded in January 1969. Benny passed away in April 1969, he might have not been well enough to perform at that time unfortunately..
One of the most inspiring songs I have ever heard. Long before my time, but there is much in the lyrics, the rhythm and the performance that just makes your soul want to give more. Mr. Edwin Starr, take a bow.
My grandmother was so hip! She bought me those windowpane hose at the Pentagon where she worked! I was right in step with the latest fashions! Grandmothers are the GLUE!Washington DC 1960’s.
Upbeat for those that don’t know was a local music show out of my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio during the 1960’s and was very popular not only in Cleveland but from my understanding it was show regional between other parts of the state into Pennsylvania and West Virginia. My dad once told me he used to go on the show to dance but I will go to CZcams and locate videos just to confirm this one day.
(1969) still listening, &...it's Nov 10, 2019. Celebrating my Elders who is my parents & age 60s up. This song is also played on 1980s movie "Adventures in Babysitter." 😍👍
I can picture it now... The girl in the blue skirt clicking up this video and calling "Kids... come here... come see your grannie dancing on television!" Jaws dropping.
My mom would likely wait until my buds were with me. Then, try to recreate the dance, for complete "son embarrassment "...I miss her every day. But she sure had one wicked sense of humor!
@@geanh7269 OMG Jeannie, you're a legend. Do you have any more videos of you dancing back then? please give us details???? How long did you guys practice before performing? Was it hard to learn? inquiring minds want to know!!!???
First time I heard this song was on the "Adventures In Babysitting" film soundtrack. On my permanent playlist ever since. Also first musical introduction to Albert Collins, now a fan.
My family, Rose, and my girlfriend Debbie were at home watching TV and saw a show that featured this song. My sister Eva's eyes lit right up which got my attention than the rest of us were getting fired up as well. Eva said to me " Let's go to work'!!! after we heard this song. We went and bought this song and started to create dance moves to it. Eva already knew the dance moves from this song. She and Rose spiced the dance moves up. Debbie and I went to work on the Aerial moves then we mixed all the moves together. We Showed my mother what we did and she loved it. My sisters Nancy and Caroline also learned how to dance to this song using the moves we created. We were told about a Christmas ceremony in Monument Square which meant that my mother, Eva, Debbie and I had to work. On The night of the ceremony, all of us went and enjoyed the ceremony. The Portland Maine news media was there so it meant we kept a low profile. Everyone, there was having a fantastic time and enjoying the ceremony. We then were listening to AWESOME music then heard this song start playing. My sister Eva went crazy!! then ran out and started dancing using the moves we created!! Soon all eyes were upon us!! Then the rest of us were FIRED UP!!! and joined my sister Eva. The News media turned their cameras on us!! By that time Debbie and I were LOSING our MINDS!!! Rose was wound up tight!!! My mother screamed, " Let it all hang OUT"!! Then we ROCKED the ceremony!!!! Our dancing was so ELECTRIFYING that we had all the floodlights there were on us then we had lights and sirens going off from all the emergency vehicles there!!! after we got done the cheering and screaming from the people was deafening!! The Mayor and News media were Interviewing us and elated at the show we put on!! My supervisor from the Medical Crisis Unit invited Rose and Caroilne to spend time with us and ride with us!! My sister Nancy went to work with my mother at the Maine Medical Center!! On the way to our duty Station, I bought food to have a party and have fun!! we got to the station and my friend Chin Li Hugged Debbie and me because he saw us on TV!! Later we ate then we were watching TV and another show featured this song. Rose, Caroline, Debbie, and I got up and showed everyone there the dance moves we created!! after we were done, my Supervisor and everyone there were Hugging and kissing us!!
There is a killer mash-up of this with Ozzy's Flying High Again called Walkin High Again. It freakin' rocks. Love this song. I really can't see her face but I love the girl on the back left with the blue skirt.
Since I was little boy in the 1960's I always wondered if he made it the last five miles. I received my answer today in the closing verses where he says, "I see my baby just across the bend" and "I can step into some funky love." Wow, thanks for posting this song!!!
Upbeat started in 1964 as the big 5 Show on WEWS. It soon changed names to Upbeat. It was mostly a local show until around 66 or 67 when it was syndicated to major TV markets in the midwest and east coast. it ran until 1971.
@rob yohn , yes sir! , straight outta CleveLAND! (altho oddly, they had a curiously nerdy guy in a turtleneck-sweater named Don Webster hosting it, but hey- it was still a must-see show, for allll the Rock & Soul acts they brought in.) :)
Thank you Kathy it was & is still hard. It was difficult for entertainment agencies from N.Y. and sent reps to the funeral for 1st hand verification. Beverly was about to have her young Dreams in the entertainment field become reality. Once again thank you.
Mr. Bill McClintock mixed this with Ozzie Osborne and Randy Rhoads, and it is just about the hottest thing ever. Edwin could have sang for that band. Thank you for getting me into Edwin Starr!!!!
Doesn't the melody remind you of "Knock On Wood" by Eddie Floyd & Going To A Go Go By The Miracles. Those Funk Brothers went to town and got down on this song.
The girl in the blue skirt looks like she's moon walking. she is so smooth. I read in the comments she still can wear that skirt and still can bust a move, Go Girl!
