Are you getting Air mixed with You Water? Typically that's an indication of a leak in the well on the drop pipe or Well Pump fitting.
Another Sign would also the Well Pump Runs constantly and won't Shut off. Basically it's Spraying out all your pressure.
Prior to Finding this Problem you may have experienced Higher than normal Sediment Issues or maybe Your Electric Bill was Higher than normal (pumps running 24/7).

You're good. Knowledge level is really high. The way you talk, quality must be the priority for parts. I appreciate that. You must already know the customer didn't do this work themselves, or have his brother or friend do that shoddy work. Otherwise, you risk upsetting the customer by trashing his brother or friends work. That's why I always take a humble approach when explaining why something failed. I try not to denigrate the previous technician because you never k ow who that person was. But you're an amazingly knowledgeable and skilled plumber. I'm impressed.

Thanks for a great video! I'm a plumber, looking to get certified for wells and I have a few questions/comments:
    1) Why no torque arrestor on the new pump, is it a soft-start motor?
    2) What would be the correct distance from the pump to the torque arrestor of one is used?
    3) You mentioned "no check valve at the top", do you remove the pump's internal check and install one just above the pump?
    4) Do you ever recommend installing a rope to the pump?
    5) What brands of pump do you prefer?
    6) In my area (central Piedmont NC), well water is often slightly acidic and will corrode brass fittings within a few years, so I've been using stainless fittings where possible, like Boshart makes a whole Tank Tee/accessory kit with everything in stainless, even a Square D pressure switch. Often stainless steel fittings are either same price or less than brass.

Hey sir, really appreciate what you do.! thank you!!
QUESTION: im working in the southern Rockies in an area hard hit by forest fires and then floods (Hermits Peak Fire in Mora New Mexico) Am a contract water system operator turned well mechanic by necesity. absolutely love it! helping folks recover after getting wiped out by the fire/flooding is extremly gratifying. most stuff i can fix no prob, but ive got one thats a puzzler.
200' well, pumps running great pulling about 5 amps and producing plenty of water. Since the fire, it has started having moderate turbidity and a sulfur smell, but thats not the reason im writing. the well will pump all the way up to 60, cut off like normal, water flows and pressure slowly drops to 40/38 lbs, then guage drops like a rock. contacts remain open but pressure plumits from 38-0 in a second or two, then sits there for a pause of 3-4 seconds, then contacts close and pump comes on, recharges like normal. customer switched pressure switch from 40/60 to 30/50 just to see if it made a difference, it did not. Tank bladder holds at whatever its set at, 2 lbs less then low cut-on point.
the only thing im thinking is maybe a plugged pressure switch line, which ill check, but is there anything else you can think of? i dont feel like that tube is gonna be plugged, but i cant thinknof anything else, can you?
really appreciate you sir! thank you so much!

The tanks got too much air in it. If the switch is still a 30/50, drop the tank air pressure to 25psi. Keep it 5psi below instead of 2. Switches are not made like they used to, I've had similar issues.
As far as the nipple being clogged, that's also a big possibility, it'll cause the exact same issue your experiencing.
The trebidity / sulfur smell is due to the fires, rain water is washing the soot into the ground and it's mixing with upper water veins (I've seen it happen to a natural spring during Hwy 95 road construction, their retention ponds were muddy and affected near by wells.) Only time will fix that problem.

With pvc a crane is nice to have, but not necessary. My well had 1" steel pipe at 160'. I pulled it by hand with a rope with a friction knot. And 3 pipe wrenches. That was loads of fun, 10 ft at a time.

Just some clarification, the pump isn't lifting. Its pushing. Even an above ground pump doesn't lift. It creates a vacuum and atmospheric pressure pushes the water up into the pump. BTW, great videos!

Thank you for all of the great information in all of your videos! Was able to replace our pressure tank in Aug and had the confidence to replace our sub pump in Oct with the help of my 2 sons. Question for you, when our pressure tank calls for water and the pump kicks on we get one strong bang or knock. The pipe enters the house in the basement then we have a check valve about 2’ from where the pipe enters the house but before my big blue filter. The filter is just before my pressure tank The knock or bang seems to be right where the line enters the house. Its somewhere between the entry point, the check valve and the big blue filter. I would appreciate any suggestion you may have. Thank you again for sharing all your knowledge. Best videos on youtube about all things related to water wells!

The barbed connector that comes out of the 3/4 galvanized 90 where the house line connects from the well pipe has a crack (no pressure) should I use stainless or just go back with a PVC connector seeing that everything else is plastic.

We have a "galvanized" system with a "air volume" control in the tank. Somehow, the system brings up a bit of air each time the pump is fired up and the air control bleeds out the excess. What I don't know is how the air get into the pipe in the first place. (BTW: it's a good system because it keeps about a half tank of water in reserve if the power goes out.

So I see you do not reinstall that large thing tapered all the way around on the pipe just above the pimp like this previously had. What is it if you don’t need it? I also noticed that you don’t install a hanging assist rope. I would think it would be worth it for the cost. Kinda like a cheap insurance policy. Love your videos. So I installed a new tank with all new plumbing around the tank along with a new pressure switch and check valve. We used copper pipe. I have no leaks at any of the joints or connections. I also checked the air pressure in tank I brought it down to 28psi due to i have a 30-50 switch. I still have air in the system. So my question is that my problem is prolly outside at the pump or connections at the top?

Question, why isn't the electric wire inside conduit? Yes, NEC does not require that but digging up buried PVC well piping and nicking or severing the wire is always a real posibility. A trench is dug, PVC is laid down with plenty of room for 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch conduit. This should be code!

Love your videos! Have you ever experienced water to continue coming out of the black pipe at the wall during a tank replacement? Well pump is off, but water is still coming out at a low pressure, but enough to fill a 5 gallon bucket within a couple minutes. Is it some kind of siphon happening?

    • @h2omechanic
      @h2omechanic  Před rokem +2

Yes, typically that's the water heater back draining...hopefully it didn't empty too much & burn the element.
If it back fed from the well side, then that happens if the well is at a higher elevation than the house, it'll act like a siphon bc the pipe does down hill & sucks water out the well. It only happens in the perfect storm type situation, but can happen. I always have a cap ready to plug it in those situations

      Basically it's your states laws.
Too many ppl on the west coast are pulling the Aquifers down faster than they can recover. So your forced to have large tanks bc of the depths of your well.
You Basically have a household water tower. The state designed yalls that way so a company can deliver you tanker loads of water. Eventually CA will be forced to do things differently in 30+ years.

I have a glass lined 42 gallon perma tank with a snifter valve in line with a check valve and a relief valve. It has the pressure gage and the pressure switch on the side of the tank. The snifter valve is leaking water while the pump is running and sucking air when the pump is off. There is air in the water line. So, if I replace the snifter valve, empty the tank and set the pressure at cut-in minus 2 psi, will that theoretically solve the problem. And, can I still use the tank? Next, I will solve the problem of leak down in the water line or the pump supply line. Does that sound reasonable? Thanks.

How do you prevent freeze damage with the pressure tank and lines outside?

Our pump is making a hissing sound, but the pump seem to work fine. Do you have any advice? Should I be concerned?

Hey what do you recommend for a well at 426 feet that was done in 2004 and company used pvc pipes and glued 1 in the other as they placed inside the well and it's never worked correctly from day one, what do you recommend to fix the problem, the well stops and restarts all the time.

My pressure gauge at the pressure (40/60) switch goes to 70psi, then stops and goes down to 60psi in a few seconds, then with no water usage goes down to 40psi in 30 minutes or so then starts pump. What could be going on ?

I have a check valve inside my house right before the pressure tank, so the house doesn't lose water pressure. But I'm getting air in the lines so I think there's a leak between the pump and the house that's pushing air into the pipes when the pump runs. The problem is the well was dug when the county didn't require info to be filed, so I have no idea how deep the well is, how low the pump hangs, or where the water level is. Is my only option to pull the pump out so that I can measure everything and see what kind of pump and length of pipe I need? The problem would be if something breaks and I'm unable to put it back. There's nowhere around me to buy a decent pump on the same day. Only Lowe's and Tractor Supply. Is it safe to guess at maybe a 3/4 hp pump for a 4 bedroom 2 1/2 bath house and buy it ahead of time so I can order something of decent quality?

I was able to check the water level with a fishing bobber. Water is just 17' below the well cap. So I have that one measurement.

My pressure switch stops clicking when I open the air release. Now water comes out strong, but if I close it then I get the clicking noise. I have changed the Pressure switch and the air tank. Any guess of what it might be?

Its so annoying that you have pipes and the accumulator just sitting above ground in the yard with no care about freezing

One more comment/question: I don't see a pressure relief on the tank Tee, is it not required? We have to have a 75 psi relief on the tank Tee, but many tees are not made with the extra opening for it, so until we found the Boshart stainless kit, we had to add a PVC tee for a boiler drain. Not a criticism, just curious. Thanks!

Hi, my pump just quit. I just scheduled an appointment for Monday however I am out of water until then. I’m no plumber but after watching your video I did some troubleshooting. There is power at the pressure switch. There was no pressure in the well tank. Mine is 20/40, and I add 15 psi of air. It still doesn’t work. Do you have any idea what else I could try?
