- How to make a Terrarium for free || Build a terrarium without spending any money
This is going to be the last terrarium built for 2020, a year that will go down in history
Its a native terrarium that I built without spending any money. You can call it a native terrarium built for free.
All the materials and plants were picked from the house and garden.
For the container I used an empty malt based beverage bottle.
I used sandstones from a planter top dressing to create a false bottom.
For the false bottom separator I used a muslin cloth that was lying around. It should allow water to percolate through. Lets see how it works since this is the first time I am using something like this. I picked up some leftover charcoal from last year.
I also picked up all the plants from the garden here. Heres the plants that I finally used in the built
-Plume moss
-Fern
-Elephants foot
-Creeping mazus
For substrate I used garden soil mixed with some leaf litter.
I found some river stones that I had used for scaping work in the garden and used them for hardscape. I used sifted river sand leftover from construction work at home to create details.
It all came together quite well I think. Hope you all like it.
Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2021

Thank you for posting this. It will make a lovely project for kids to do before winter, so they can bring a little nature inside before it gets cold.
Thank you. Yes indeed this is going to be a fun little project for the kids
This is so relaxing to watch... I can't wait to try it...💕

Thank you
Wow! This is absolutely awesome. I don’t have a yard, cuz I live in the financial district in San Francisco, however, I can go to park to search for some of these plants and rocks.
Thank you
Beautiful.👌👌👌👌👍
Thank you
I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend!
Awesome job
Thanks
I decided to watch this one rather than the 1.5 hour long other option I had but this felt like a week had passed..
I made one last year but didn't added charcoal as it wasn't available at that moment but due to improper sunlight it got all dried up (I think sunlight is the reason) going to make it again so I was searching the videos then I found your channel.... going to try this method as well....I used sheet of polythene in the place of muslin cloth in my previous one.....
Do Pot some holes if you're using polythine... Otherwise the water will not be able to get to the rocks..
Do not place it under direct sunlight
Nice
Wow awesome 💞💞
Thanks
와~ 😍 새로운 세상이네요! 정말 멋져요!!!
Thanks
splendid
Thanks
Good one
Thanks
Man u deserve Oscar ❤️👍👍

Thank you
subbed this is reallyyy nice
Thank you and welcome to the channel
Lindo demais saudações do Brasil 🇧🇷
Thank you!
❤❤❤
I built our first terrarium with my two daughters last weekend after watching your, and some other, videos. We used muslin cloth also. Along with 3 stones and a pine cone for hardscape. 2 different mosses No charcoal though. And no silvertail insect things. Are these essential? We just added 2 woodlice/isopods. How many are good to start with? Thanks for your video. We're making our second one this weekend ☺️.
Thanks and nice to know that. You can build a terrarium without springtails.
From what I understand, the charcoal is used for nutrients, as well as filtering the water into the reservoir from toxins. If you have rinsed charcoal from a leftover bonfire, it should do fine
This is so good to see. Thanks for the reply.. I got my answer. I think the tools that you are using also important.... how can I buy these like long forcep ? Is this can be found in a medical store?
Thanks.
You can watch this video on tools. You will find all the buying links of the tools in the description
czcams.com/video/OoBZI0OB_0c/video.html
Super bravò😊😊😊😊😊
Thanks
🎉😮
Do you need to add springtails and isopods to reduce/prevent molds?
Yes
If I properly courentine mosses and plants than is it necessary to use spring tails??where do springtails get food in a closed terrarium?? Should I put some????
Its not always necessary but it helps in case of a mold outbreak. Springtails feed on dead and decaying matter as well as mold and algae. There is no need to add any food.
Do you sell bonsais? I am new to your channel. Great work. Best wishes.
Thanks. No I don’t sell bonsais
watch with 1.5x speed.
You're welcome

Nice. I understand that this was a free build - thus yard soil. Can you help me understand how the use of a mix of soil, coco coir, fine Sphagnum Moss and sand will impact life and growth of the terrarium?
Thanks. Yes a substrate mix with the components you mentioned works very well in my experience.
a lot of top soil outdoors are often heavy in clay, thus lacking in drainage, which make little difference outside
in a terrarium you need to ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, hence the soil mix and the gravel layer at the bottom
@@TheWillyba The soil he used looked fairly sandy with fine sand. My query in my thought wondering was sandy soil can get packed and maybe over the life of a terrarium that could cause problems for the roots (I'm also guessing that was the reason for adding the chopped up leaves). It seems like coco coir and sphagnum both hold moisture and resist packing over time. Though he didn't add springtails, I would if I built one like that. (I know his was free - but moist places have springtails in lots of places, like under out door flower pots.) I think that the presentation terrarium might not provide as 'happy' of a habitat for micro fauna. I've only been doing terrariums since COVID-19 and am still lacking experience here.
@@michaels5705 i see, as long as there's a false bottom i think things should be alright
I can't seem to find much springtails in my area (in Taiwan in the city) so i dont have much experience with them, but any detrivore would probably help.
Tanner from serpadesign is a
BIG advocator of springtails and looks like he gets good results
I made one with my backyard material and i was wondering can i put a snail in there or will it be to toxic for it
Not a good idea unless it’s very large and designed to house snails.
Artist at work. One question: can we have a touch-me-not plant in a terranium?
Never tried bro. Why dont you try it out and let me know.
how do you know which ferns to collect? here in our state, bracken ferns are carcinogenic (all parts including spores) to human, livestock, pets. i'm struggling to identify the safe fern to forage for.
Most ferns do well in enclosed spaces. I keep trying out whatever species I get.
Wonderfull!! Can i keep insects (lady bugs) inside it? I have some pet ladybugs and i need some habitat for them.
Thanks. No not in this setup
@@TheUrbanNemophilist oh thanku, can u make video on bugs terrarium?
I enjoyed this so much. My daughter started watching your videos as well she is 9. We are wondering what surprises you may get from using garden soil. We have surprise spiders and slugs in our native ecosphere.
Thank you. Nice to know that your daughter enjoys terrarium videos too 😀. I used garden soil only because it’s a free built. Ideally I would stay away. But yes no hitch hikers so far
Can u tell me when too spray water
No further watering needed after you have watered during set up and closed it up. A water cycle will set in within the closed space and keep the plants hydrated.
How big should a jar be?
Bigger the better
Wait so u can use charcoal from the firepit ? It's not some special kind ?
These were horticulture grade charcoal.
Can it survive even without adding springtails and isopods?
Yes
Can i use broken clay pot pieces? non painted claypots...like whole natural ones? If yes, should I sterilize them?
I think you can. Sterilisation may not be necessary if natural claypots.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Thank you so much! I am going to make my first one..Wish me luck😊
Can you explain why you seperate false layer from everything else cuz i don't know if it becuse you want to prevent mud to make or it is becuse you want to make place for toxins to store?
Just to prevent false bottom from getting clogged. But not always necessary. Depends on species of plants being used.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Thanks
Can I use any normal coal present at home instead of charcoal?
Horticultural grade charcoal or activated carbon pellets are safe. The ones lying around at home for grilling may contain chemicals for ease of burning.
You need charcoal to put in your terrarium? How much does it cost? Can you find it outside?
You can skip if you do not have
How important is the cloth/screen in between the false bottom? Can i skip it?
Yes you can
@@TheUrbanNemophilist alright, me and my son will build our first terrarium this weekend. Thanks!
Can I use plastic bottles?
Or only glass jars?
You can use plastic but it may not look good aesthetically and will not be easy to clean when covered with algae or dirt.
Ok...thank you for the help...and reply... 😀
I don’t understand the plants do not need o2?
Covered here czcams.com/video/RbbLm5IGIHE/video.html
Nice video but its so unnecessarily slow I had to play it 2x
Thanks. Yes indeed I am slowing down in life. Its quite an amazing experience.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist thank you for creating this video ✨
Me, too
To each his own…I love it becoz its exceptionally peaceful and tranquil
Wen do we have two water it?
Its a closed system having its own water cycle so watering will not be needed after the initial watering during setup.
Is the bottle plastic or glass
It is glass
substitute of river stone?
Any stone
so kind of u
Lovely 😍💋 💝💖❤️
I always thought elephants foot was a weed
Any plant could be a weed in some part of the world. Some could be invasive too. But they are all part of nature.
Como faz para traduzir para português? Brasil
You can try using subtitles but not sure if it will work on text. Otherwise video is quite self explanatory.
ببخشید معمولا چه زمانی باید درب بطری را باز کرد و آب اسپری کرد؟
Case to case basis. I do it once in 3-4 months or when soil feels dry.
خیلی ممنون
Hey how long does it live?
Many years with some care and maintenance. Updates on my builds here czcams.com/play/PL2B6lN6qObdqlt8DFXLIiX2etXZltumxZ.html
@@TheUrbanNemophilist thank you,,,,i liked your terrarium collection,,
Is there a video update?
Yes czcams.com/video/Ghku5iTm05o/video.html
@@TheUrbanNemophilist thankyou
Increase speed to 2X and it’s barely bearable to watch.
I am slowing down in my life so that I can take my time and enjoy the moments and the little things around me. The video is a reflection of that.
the fern looks fine in the jar when small but since you showed the parent plant, the fern itself will get much too big for the terrarium.
Check out the 11 months update video to know what happened
czcams.com/video/Ghku5iTm05o/video.html
Can I keep this terrarium under indirect sunlight?
Yes you can but no direct sunlight and temperatures should not exceed 26-27 degrees in the location
If in artficial light the temp shuld maintain the same?
@@dr.gowthi3565 yes
Why is the video in slow motion?
Because I am slowing down in life to enjoy the little things that surround me.
However you will always have the option to speed up the video in youtube.
Give me update #

This is a scam I can't get a terrarium with n9 dollar I always spent 100trillion dollar to get a jar
This is real ..no fake
Watch this on 1.75× speed. Thank me later
Sure because today the world wants to get ahead of time. But I am slowing down in life. It helps me enjoy the moment and the little things around me. It gives me immense joy and pleasure.
We posted a "dislike"because the person who recorded this video assumed, incorrecty, that all those materials are available for everyone, this is not true.
The person who recorded the video also suggested alternative options to people who reached out to him with a list of unavailable materials. The good thing is that they were all inspired to make one after watching this video. They know that the person who recorded the video is always available to support and help enthusiasts. Thank you!
So, to make a terrarium for free, you need rocks, plants, moss, charcoal and soil "from your garden"... which isn't free at all, cause you bought all of it at some point. It's rather a terrarium from recycled materials, but definitely not for free.
Well I did not pay for any of the materials so technically its a free build for me. It may be different for others based on their available resources.
Nice
Thanks
