    ''I've always been a massive fan of Boards of Canada (if its not obvious already!). 10-11 years ago I stumbled upon a bootleg recording of one of their extremely rare live performances at the Warp 10 Birthday party in 1999. The closing tune at this show has always remained a mystery to me. As far as I know it has no title and has never been released. It's quite possibly one of my favorite things they have done and really is a shame it never came out. You can hear the original bootleg recording (quite bad quality) here : • Boards of Canada @ War...
    Fast forward to Summer 2012... Since I am a huge nerd I decided to take this bootleg recording and re-produce it for fun. Using the recording I laid new drums over the existing drum patterns (almost 100% accurate to original), replayed some synth parts and the bassline. The only thing I didn't try to re-create was the original vocoder parts and some random samples so I used the original bootleg recording for that. I was tempted to make a shorter 4-5 minute version but I figured I should preserve the original piece in its intended length.

    This track is from one single live performance. A performance that was never supposed to be recorded. If we were never supposed to hear this, think of what other live tracks we may have never heard. BoC are amazing, yet so very frustrating sometimes.

    Boards of Canada: Type of band to create a banging track that is only featured in a live concert and never released afterwards, and then proceeds never to play live again. Goddammit, lol.

      From my understanding (hopefully I’m not wrong) most if not all of their music was made for the enjoyment of family and friends. It seems to some extent even now this is still the case. Which is why some of their music is still yet to ever be released for large distribution and sale. Also I think BoC just believe for what ever reason that their earlier stuff is unsuitable for the public.

    • @sweetwheatsy
      @sweetwheatsy Před 6 lety +8

      Oh wow... Somehow I can't say I'm all that surprised, considering their overall presences, but man. Can't really blame them either. But as long as they do acknowledge their music has influenced (and continues to) the life of not just their friends, to a pretty large extent.

      @@kaylemkerr6989 the BoC brothers are perfectionists when it comes to their music. My guess is these tracks were made without public expectations taken into consideration which would explain why they dont want anyone to hear them outside of their family and friends. (Or until they polish their back catalogue to fit the quality of their mainline studio albums)

      Fuchk Geemale Indeed, in my opinion, this mix takes something that was once annoying in the original recording and turns it into a sample that becomes part of the song, in a very BoC way. The guy making what sounds like a very enthusiastic comment at 10:38, (The comment Benjamin referred to) perfectly timed after the song ends and before the rest of the audience starts cheering is a favorite moment for me.

      John Hooke
      John, yes I agree. I should clarify my comment intended to refer to all of the audience sounds based on how Machinedrum placed them into the background of the mix. The timing of that particular audience member was especially memorable however. I don't think you could ask for anything better from a live recording.

Probably because I had them as my playlist on a trip there last year. The name came from the film boards of Canada, that's were most of their videos are sourced from. :)

      Their parents moved to Canada when the brothers were younger (which I'm guessing how they developed the obsession with the Film Board Of Canada) I may be wrong here, but I think they returned to Scotland later on. 👍

    These shows are shrouded in so much mystery and BoC are so interested in this kind of mystique, if I were more of a conspiracy theorist I'd say the shows never happened and this show is just a funny way they put out tunes.

      Yes I Am The drum loop has been recreated 1:1 with the original, and the mix has been greatly improved, blending the audience seamlessly into the background, like classic Boards voice samples (turning a major issue with this being a live recording into a strength). I imagine it took quite a bit of work and appreciation of their work to make this mix.

    Hang on a fucking second.... That's a dubstep beat and this was recorded in 1999?! Some serious originality going on there! That is of course if that is more or less what the original drum beat went like? Is it? @ cRyanheh
