The Space Wolves, known in their own dialect of Juvjk as the Vlka Fenryka or "Wolves of Fenris," are one of the original 20 First Founding Space Marine Chapters, and were once led by their famed primarch, Leman Russ. Originally the VIth Legion of Astartes raised by the Emperor at the dawn of the Great Crusade, the Space Wolves are renowned for their anti-authoritarian ways and their embrace of their homeworld Fenris' savage barbarian culture as well as their extreme deviation from the Codex Astartes in the Chapter's organisation.

Like, the roman empire spread all the way to britain, and with them spread their beliefs, understandings, and their pantheons influenced by the Greeks. Would it be any surprise then that the people who lived across europe would have bits and pieces of greek myth that were incorporated over generations as their own myth?

Rune Priests know they are psykers, it is the way they use that power that is different:
Hawser stared up at the rune priest in quiet alarm. He could hear Aun Helwintr’s voice, but the priest’s lips were not moving.
‘The measure of your surprise, Ahmad Ibn Rustah,’ the rune priest murmured without using his mouth, ‘reflects the unconscious contempt you have for the Sixth Legion Astartes.’
    ‘Contempt? No-’
‘You cannot hide it. We are barbarians, arctic savages, gene-fixed and dressed up with war-tech, and sent off to do unseemly labour for our more cultured masters. It is a common belief.’
‘I never said that-’ Hawser protested.
‘Or even consciously thought it. But deep down inside you, there is a patronising sense of superiority. You are a civilised man, and you’ve come to study us, like a magos biologis observing some primitive tribe of throwbacks. We live like animals, and we follow shamans. And yet… Great Terra! Could it be that our shamans have real gifts? Genuine powers? Could it be that they are more than just bone-rattling, bead-jangling gothi, out of their heads on mushrooms, howling at the sky?’
    ‘Psionics,’ whispered Hawser.
‘Psionics,’ Aun Helwintr echoed, smiling. He used his real voice.
‘I had heard that some of the Legions actually had psyker contingents,’ said Hawser.
‘Most of them have,’ replied Helwintr.
‘But the occurrence is so very rare,’ Hawser said. ‘The mutation is a-’
‘The psyker mutation is a priceless asset to our species,’ said Helwintr. ‘Without it, we would be condemned to captivity on Terra. The Great Houses of the Navigators allow us to expand our reach. The astrotelepaths allow us to communicate over the gulfs. But caution must always be exercised. Control.’
    ‘Why?’
‘Because when you gaze out with your mind, you never know what will stare back.’

So an interesting bit about this is that it's inspired by a real conversation. The only records we have written contemporarily about viking funerals come from a man named Ahmad ibn Fadlan, a Muslim explorer from the late Abbasid golden age islamic order of scholars. While he was studying the Russki Vikings, he did write about how their shamans were strange and how he felt they were uncivilized. He'd treated them with great respect and gotten respect back and both sides agreed it was a difference in culture. He did record a conversation he had with one of the Vikings which was basically this word for word without the 40k stuff.

I wish they talked about bjorn's origin story more.. He got his title by saving a remembrancer from a tzeentchian changeling who infiltrated their ship and tried to kill him.. The daemon touched bjorn's left arm and surged warp fire through it forcing the remembrancer to help bjorn cut it off before bjorn could kill the changeling.. when leman saw bjorn missing an arm, he asked him if it would impede his fighting prowess and bjorn said that he kinda liked it coz it would make a great story.. leman joked that "one-handed" sounded silly so he proposed "fell-handed" instead and bjorn agreed laughing with his primarch.. then another time, bjorn's pack got attacked by a powerful daemon leaving bjorn as the only survivor.. Leman vowed to hunt down the daemon to claim its skull to hang in the halls of the fang but when he found the daemon, bjorn was already there fighting it.. Leman was furious at first being robbed of the kill but then could only look on in pride as his son clambered up the daemon's back using his new lightning claw and proceeded to rip out the daemons throat.. After the battle, leman raised bjorn's fell hand proclaiming him as a worthy entry into the wolf guard.. But bjorn wasn't happy with the kill coz he had survivor's guilt being the only one in his squad at the time to have survived..

The world spirit thing is part of why people think Russ was a hypocrite with the Rune Priests.
Russ (and the Khan) never really embraced the Imperial Truth. Due to their world's long held traditions of warp manipulation, they both knew more about the warp than their other brothers (aside from Magnus). The issue Russ had with Magnus's practices was that Magnus was playing with the warp directly and without any restraints. Both the Rune Priests and Stormseers followed their home world's psychic traditions which were based on limited accepted practices that were all mediated, and viewed the Thousand Son's as recklessly doing whatever they could with the warp just because they possessed the ability to do it.
"your scientists (psykers)were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.”
That quote and the original context in Jurassic Park is a good representation of how Russ and the Rune Priests viewed Magnus and the Thousand Son's manipulation of the warp.

    “SHUT UP! I’M THINKING.”
This was not something they had expected. All stood worriedly as they waited for Bjorns thoughts to reach a conclusion.

There was some conferral. Eventually the Brother-Captain stepped forward again and said “We… are… neutral on the subject of wolves?”
“GOOD. I HATE THE FUCKING THINGS.”
Bjorn leaned forward, as much as was possible for a Dreadnought to do, until he teetered precariously over the Brother-Captain and the slightest tremor from the engines of the ship risked condemning the unfortunate marine to a crushing death. He spoke.
“NO WOLVES. NO QUESTIONS ABOUT LEMAN RUSS. ABSOLUTELY NO REFERENCES TO FELL HANDS. ANYBODY WHO ASKS ME A QUESTION ABOUT THE OLD TIMES IS GOING TO BE USED AS PAINT TO HELP FIX THIS SHITTY JOB YOU’VE DONE ON ME,” Bjorn rumbled. “THOSE ARE MY TERMS. AGREE AND I’LL PRETEND NOT TO NOTICE WHAT YOU THIEVING LITTLE BASTARDS HAVE DONE. DEAL?”
    The Captain nodded frantically.
“GOOD. NOW WHERE ARE THE FUCKING ASSAULT PODS?” Bjorn demanded, spinning his power claw and returning to a normal stance, mirth creeping back into his voice. This could turn out to be a very good century indeed.

The older a Wulf gets the more tactical and HUNTER they are. In ther wild youth they are a wild bloodclaw that only an olf wolf can lead. In their middle age they are a tactical marine. He killed so many by himself that they thought he was an embodiment of the Emperor and that they didn't kill him, he was just a sleeping, small, war god. UM AKSHUALLY!
DK was remembering the "Omophagea" when talking about eating things and gaining their memories (not just kroot). It's been played down in recent editions as it seems they're trying to sloly retconn it out, but according to the "Creation of a space marine" phase 8 section on the Lexicanum
"This implant, also called "the Remembrancer", allows a Space Marine to 'learn by eating'. It is situated in the spinal cord but is actually part of the brain. Four nerve bundles are implanted connecting the spine and the stomach wall. Able to 'read' or absorb genetic material consumed by the marine, the omophagea transmits the gained information to the Marine's brain as a set of memories or experiences."

    • @ObakeOnna
      @ObakeOnna Před 5 měsíci

Also, the idea that eating people gives you their powers is a real historical belief in many cannibalistic societies around the world. You could say it's a shared magical concept in our species. It's not really a prominent thing in the Norse sagas, which usually depict cannibalism as a monstrous thing, either a heinous crime or an act done by literal monsters like giants and trolls. There are a few instances in less known stories where powers are transferred from person to person through eating an organ or drinking blood, though, but I'd be very surprised if anyone at GW was even aware of them. It's probably a more general "superstitious barbarians be eating people" trope at work.

Interesting thing about how Space Wolves differ significantly from Codex-compiliant chapters: instead of being put in Scout companies, new marines are given actual power armor and basically become Assualt Marines (bloodclaw) with chainswords and bolt pistols.
...which probably means a new Space Wolf has a higher life expectancy then most newly minted marines in other chapters.
Space Wolf scout companies (Wolf Scouts) instead are usually filled with veterans who prefer the solitude of the wilds and wastes to the boisterous large groupings of their peers...they give up their power armour because their introverts and have just had enough of all the singing and boasting of the rest of the largely extroverted chapter. XD
"I've been a bloodclaw, a longfang, and a grey hunter...and by the All-Father, they are all just. So. Damned. Loud! And Impatient!"
...unlike typical neophyte-filled scout companies who field snipers, Wolf Scouts prefer working up close and personal with combat knives and silenced/suppressed Bolt Pistols...they're basically the prototype for the Primaris Reivers.
...and because they prefer stealth, encirclement, and diversions, they are also basically the unit that hunts most like an actual wolf.
...actually, because of the "neophyte Space Wolves get put right into actual power armour", most of the other unit types of Space Wolves are described as "veteran" equivalents...Grey Hunters (tactical marines), Longfangs (heavy weapon/devestator marines), Wolf Guard (Terminators), Lone Wolves, Wolf Scouts...the numbers of "veteran" troops that the Space Wolves can put out, does seem to indicate that better arming their neophytes from the get-go instead of making them earn it by service in a scout company, does have a positive effect.

He does have a mini, but it's one of the old ones and it's goofy af. But the main reason I personally love him is because he had the respect of the Orks. At his death, he and a group of his wolf guard fought against the Orks in a narrow pass to let their brothers get to safety. They fought for several solar hours and one by one the wolf guards fell, but Ranulf remained standing for a while longer. Eventually the Orks got through and killed Ranulf, but he put up such a good fight that when the Space Wolves retoook the pass, they found Ranulf and his wolf guard propped up on shrines made of Ork wargear. One of my favourite space wolf stories and something I just felt like mentioning.

A fun little sidefact: after the Lion knocked out Russ with that sucker punch, the 2 Legions immediately started to bicker and argue who was the actual winner of their fight. The Wolves saying Lion won via cowardly cheating while the Angels say it was a fight nonetheless and Leman is at fault for laughing in the first place.
And so now they basically have the tradition where the Space Wolves and Dark Angels meet each other each year on a day where they pick a fighter of both teams and they fight it out between each other as akin to see who‘s right in the argument of „who won in that fight, Lion or Leman?“. I don't know if it has been retconned since 5th ed, but the story behind the Blood Claws were that the first pack you were put in was also the only pack you were in. Losses don't get replenished over time and that is why many Grey Hunter squads aren't ten man squads like in the codex chapters. When a Blood Claw has become a Grey Hunter it usually means that he has grown past the initial bloodthirst that Blood Claws usually feel when they become full Space Marines and have grown wiser.
The Wolf Priest aren't only the chaplains either. Lore wise they also work as the chapters apothacary.
But like I wrote first, those things might have changed since I stopped playing back in 6th ed.
There was so much fun lore in that old codex about why they were as they were. Like Sky Claws, who are just Blood Claws that wanted to get in closer to the enemy faster, so they were given Jump Packs by the Grey Hunters and then flew towards the enemy in a happy glee. (Very orkish as well there when I think about it.)

I just finish "Prospero Burns" book of the HH series. Honestly I thought it was going to be a boring listen and a repetition of the Thousand Sons prequel of it. Instead I got a nice introduction to Space Wolf culture. The whole story is told from the perspective of a normal human which makes it way more interesting too and not feel like "yet another" space marine story.
I think it's worth a listen and a book club in the future

I've been a fan of the Space Wolves for a while now, because I'm a fan of the Imperium factions that go out there, protect the Imperium, get the job done. Salamanders, Wolves, White Scars, Guard. These are the forces of Humanity I like.
As for Xenos, I'm the exact opposite. I like the factions that go "Imma do the thing because the Galaxy is mine too mess with", aka the Necrons and the true Eldar, the Drukhari.

Something I really like about the Space Wolves are how they recruit their Iron Priests (tech marines). Normally, chapters just send any technologically adept recruits to the mechanicus and get tech marines that way. However, the Iron Priest's recruitment process is entirely separated from the main chapter. Young blacksmiths will travel to an Iron Priest's forge and craft a weapon to prove their skill. If its masterful work, they'll get to become an apprentice and will become a space wolf that way. If it isn't, they'll be turned into a servitor as punishment for wasting the Iron Priests time. Its interesting, because its one of the few instances where the Techmarines actually get to have their own unique practices and culture within a chapter, and are more than just the space marines mechanics/tech support. Aside from the Iron Hands.

Didnt Lukas create the fenrisian ale because he missed getting drunk?
Wulfen aren’t mindless creatures there are those in the space wolves that realize they have memories of old life and such and can remember there old life which is why they will fight with space wolves but it doesnt happen tooooo often because most space wolves kill Wulfen on site and some times go on hunts for them to just eradicate them because they are seen as evil or chaos tainted by some successor chapters of the Space Wolves

Wasn't this a plot point in one of the Ragnar's books. That Wolf Priests can somehow make wolfen remmber what their true mission is and lead them into battle. And also that pretty much any Wolf is just couple steps from being a Wolfen they are just able to control that side and could possibly even step back.

Love the episode and glad you are finally covering my favorite faction. A little more information about Lukas The Trickster though!
He is what I would arguably call, the most petty loyalist marine to have existed. To the point where despite being a veteran of many battles he is still a bloodclaw. At one point he had a tactical nuke surgically installed in his chest so that if he would fall in battle, he is sure to take his foes with him.

As far as Space Wolves go, they’re tied with Salamanders as my favorite chapter. I think one of the coolest quotes is when a group of Space Wolves are talking to themselves and they talk about guardsmen and that “who do you think they’d rather fight beside, the silent Blood Angel, stoically slaughtering or the howling, cursing, laughing Space Wolf who actually talks to them and acknowledges their existence while truly inspiring the men.”

I kind of want to see Lukas the Trickster face off against Lucius the Eternal because it would be a martyrdom battle. I don't think there's any chance Lukas would avoid getting possessed if he killed Lucius but he does have a grenade where his second heart was so if Lucius kills him, gloats and then dies to the grenade presumably he can't resurrect from the exploded pieces of Lukas.

@@dovahfett5919 You're correct, as annoying as that lore is. I was kind of hoping culpability would revert to Lukas as the one who placed the grenade there or Lucius could just respawn off the guy who made the power sword or daemon weapon or C'tan phase blade which killed him which generally doesn't seem to be the case. That said, with the exception of the Guard and gretchen, an imperial civilian making grenades is probably one of the lowest life expectancy situations in the setting so there's every chance the guy who made the grenade is just dead already.
