Great video. The time stamps were really helpful. We'll done on the 12 footer. If I can grow mine to half that size I will be happy!
Cheers. They were so enjoyable to grow
i love it when they wave in the wind
Hold me now!!!
I’m on my second year with sunflowers and this was very helpful! Both years I thought I was doing something wrong because they are so slow to grow, but now I see it really is a slow grower at first. And I need to fertilize much, much more. Thank you!
Yeah thats it, they take a bit of time at the start. Any giant veg are heavy feeders so they probably can't have too much. Be careful not to feed them when they're small though. Once they're 3 foot ish that's when they'll appreciate the extra
That is the way mine grow, seems like they like it a little heavy on the fertilizer.
I love sunflowers. The heads remind me of a big, smiling face.
Thankyou! Currently experimenting with Mongolian giants, thanks for the help from a first timer 😊
I'm so happy to have found your channel on a freezing cold snowy day in Colorado, USA! I learned some things, and I'll definitely be planting huge sunflowers this Spring. Thank you for sharing everything!
Hi there, so glad you like my channel 🙂
Wow like your sunflower 😊😊
Hi Love your preparations before and after planting, I've been trying to to get over 12 Foot by growing in pots and feeding seaweed etc but only ever achieved over 12 foot once and got to 13' 4" by peeing on it every night after coming back from the Pub so I'm going to a local brewery to get some Hops this year
and see if that helps cause that's all I can put the 13' 4" success to.
@@PureExistence1 Hi Sorry for the late reply. Last year was the first year that I have tried to grow a tall Sunflower in a pot or anywhere else for that matter. The Pot I used was
12" Diameter & 14" in depth. The seed was a Mongolian which I started in a Bio-Degradable so as not to disturb the roots when planting on in the main Pot and a lot of gravel for drainage,. I mixed B.F. & Bone, then Later on Chicken Pellets plus Farmyard Manure and finally my Coup-de-Grace I peed on it every night after going out for a few Pints at my Local.
This year I have used every imaginable fertilizer going i.e. Seaweed, Chicken Pellets, B.F. & Bone, Potash Granules Slow release Pellets, Manure I have thrown the lot in and mixed altogether but also used Perlite & Vermiculite to make the soil drain well but yet retain moisture. So we shall see what happens. At the present time it's growing as though it's going out of fashion so I'm hopeful of beating last years. Forgot to add after it gets established then the hops will begin after I've had a Pint or two.
Best of Luck and keeps us informed of progress.
@@stuartwild2081 how did they do? Did you get taller sunflowers this time?
Lovely
Beautiful 🤩
Thank you for the info
Great video, and amazing flowers. Well done !
Well done 👏🏻👏🏻
wow just seen this -fantastic ,well done -thanks😊
Ever had sunflower blooms cut off by sheetty 🐿️? That happened too many times personnally. 60-90 days to grow nice cool blooms and they gnaw it off.
I love sunflower 🌻
Very handy hints bonny lad. I'll use them . Cheers
Wow these babies are giants!!
Well done, imma try this year to do the same
Great video man. Going planting some sunflower soon cheers
loved the video, wishing you the best of luck!
Thanks! You too 🙂
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for this video.
You're welcome 😊
I'll be planting my first ever sunflowers this year, this has been really helpful, thank you.
Enjoyed the video my man! Keep em up! 👍👍
Cheers 👍
Great video I live in the North East same as you , yours are amazing
Really loving your channel & great videos, inspiring me to grow some of my own 💚
Glad to hear it 🙂 thanks for watching
I found some really useful tips from this video. Thank you.
🙂👍
Just liked and subscribed! I've grown some too! Nice to watch this
Awesome! Thank you!
Nice
nice video dude thanks for showing me i planted some yesterday but I am worry they not grow tall my American giant hybrid I planted some I still have seeds I will do that thanks for shereing that’s nice at 5:27
great tip on putting the pipe tubes over the seedlings
Where might I find the pipe tubes?
Learnt so many helpful tips in such a short time. The collars and the baby leaf thing, wowser, hopefully I can beat 6ft this year. Thanks
Best of luck 🤞🤞
🌻🌻🌻Great job! Thanks for sharing! 🌻🌻🌻
I have a few that are a good 10' and one just might hit 12'!
At any rate, they're still beautiful and deliucious! I loved your video!
12 ft is awesome!! Thank you so much for sharing the knowledge.
No problem 🙂
Very gorgeous plant.
My small size black sunflower seed germinated and growing successfully.
But my large Grey seeds not germinating which i purchased from market.
Wow 30 ft sunflower !
Thanks for your video. Great work. I'm growing mine for the first time :)
Good luck! 🙂
Great video mate - thank you for the useful advice!
Had a few huge ones over the years. Sunset Red was stunning
Sounds nice, I'll check that variety out
Great video. What type of sunflower are.those?
Nice video. Been gowing giants for years now, my tallest being 11'11". I think ou woukd have got evwn taller if you had left more space between each one, ao they don't compete for nutrients / water .
I have limited growing space with right conditions, I am really limited to 2 to 3 giants, this year I have titans and giraffes.
Great video , I grew Mongolian Giants last year and they were 14ft tall , trying the rare Sunzillas this year can’t wait to plant them and see the results !!!
Nice! Do you support them?
@@TheGreyGardener1990 yes , I put together 3 x 6ft canes together with cables ties then used string to tie the sunflower to the canes and fence

Me and the kids have just planted seeds and have biggest sunflower challenge. 20 quid for the winners. Doing my research to give me the upper hand haha. Thank for the video
Best of luck! Glad my video helped 🙂
A deer bit one head off when it had not developed well. Will it grow back? Giant sunflowers have only one head so I wonder if it will still grow
Lovely sunflowers so many critters here in Florida like to eat my sunflowers so they stay quite short 😂🌻 ✨
That's a shame 😕
@@TheGreyGardener1990 it’s alright! I cut the shorter flowering stems and enjoy them in the windowsill!! Plenty of others veggies in garden 🪴 That’s why videos like yours are so nice!
Hi, this is great thanks. Could you tell me when you water inside the collar and when you start outside? Im worried about stem rot.
Hi, I can't remember exactly when I watered inside and out but my soil was relatively free draining so it wasn't sat in water. If you're worried, I don't think it will do any harm to just water outside the collar
@@TheGreyGardener1990 ah ok thats good to know, thanks for taking the time to reply!
QUESTION: I will be planting in ground(clay soil) and want to use a solar drip water system (max 1.3L/min). How many liters do you water each plant and how often? I was reading that you should only 'deep' water them once or twice a week. Suggestions are very welcome. Thank you
Absolutely fantastic!!!!! Going to see how tall I can get them with some extra blooming and rooting fertilizer. If I feed it blooming and rooting fertilizer, will it have more blooms with smaller flowers? I just it to grow as tall as possible! Thank you in advance.
I meant to say 20-20-20.
Hi there, it won't get "additional" flowers if that's what you mean? It will only have the one sunflower head. But yeah, I'd say feed away. Giant fruit and veg love extra feeds so just test it! Good luck 🙂
About how much, weight wise, do you get out of each plant?
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
First time gardner and mammoth sunflower grower here. Tha ks for the great video. Should you ever prun a mammoth sunflower during the growing period?
Not that I'm aware of. If you feel any of the leaves are becoming infected with anything, pulling a few off won't do it any harm.
Love these tips. I'm currently growing my first in a pot. It's 5 weeks old atm and doing well.
It's a shame I can't grow in the ground because the only ground soil I have in my garden is in the shade most of the day.
Anyway, I currently have a pot about 35cm diameter and 30cm high. Would you recommend a large pot? If so what size?
Would it be harmful to transplant again at this stage? It's currently 2.5ft high.
You should be ok to transplant again. They have a large taproot so the biggest pot you can find I'd say. I have no experience of growing them in pots so not sure on size. But bigger the better
Hi Grey Gardener. Smashing video, so helpful. I'm a new gardener and have my sunflowers started on the warm windowsil in my kitchen. They're about two inches high at the moment 8th March. I have some fibre pots I was thinking of transferring them to when they've grown another couple of inches. Shall I then plant them direct into the ground in the pots in May? Any advice is appreciated.
Hi there, glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah don't see why not, just make sure they get plenty of light in the meantime. Are they a giant variety?
@@TheGreyGardener1990 Yes. Hoping to match the German chap 🤣. Thanks for prompt reply 💗
@@ginajohnson3862 good luck!
Where did you buy the seeds?
I’ll try this I’ve been wanting to grow huge sunflowers for ages this year but they’re all quite small although multiheaded I’ve kept the seeds Do you recommend any particular seed sauce for the huge sunflowers
I think I got these from premier seeds if I remember rightly. Skyscrapers these but I know a lot of people grow the Russian mammoth I think the name is
🌻🌻🌻
are sunflowers on a set timer or are they photoperiod and flower with the end of summer and the light hours ?
You know what I have no idea. I'm going to look into that 👍
I grow sunflowers. They are the most beautiful flower. I am going to grow more...
They are. I'm hoping to grow more this year too
What kind of pipe was used for the protectors ?
It's just a hard plastic builders type of pipe. They were already in my allotment
Bit late to the party here....thought I'd look on here for how to support my sunflowers to stop them snapping....guess I've done it wrong, I've got 3, about 4ft tall in the same 3ft wife trellis 😂 didn't know you planted them...oops, there's always next year
If they're normal ones you might be ok. These were the giant variety so need more space
@@TheGreyGardener1990 appreciate the reply, would it be worth planting them now?
@@tesc_gaming_central2249 quite late mate I would have said. There nay be smaller varieties that grow quicker you could try but not these giant ones
Sunflowers are a TAP ROOT plant and as such do better when direct sowed and not inhibited by a transplant container.
Yes agreed but if you want to start them off early, it's not much use sowing them direct as the frost will get them. They're OK if you don't leave them in the pots for too long
Wow 12 feet!? How in the heck the German guy grow 30 feet!!! That is crazy amazing!!!
Suggest you tie a tape measure to the flower when it is still readable so you don't need a ladder thinking out the box
Good idea 💡
Can you you just set the seeds directly into the flowerbed? Or do you need the first step in small containers?
You can plant direct yeah just as long as frost won't get the seedlings
Are there shorter varieties with flowerheads as large as this? Or with sunflowers, the taller the bigger?
I'm not sure to be honest. I'd guess taller the bigger
Inspiring stuff! Can you grow them in a tub? Also, forgive my horticultural ignorance, but what happens at the end of summer? Do they just die?
You can save the sunflower seeds at the end of just let the birds have them. But yeah essentially they die. I guess you could put them in tubs but because it's such a large thing with a big root system,.the tub would have to be quite large and you'd have to water a lot more
@@TheGreyGardener1990 Thank you :)
do you have any suggestions on choosing seeds to plant? or do you just plant any seed?
i just started growing sunflowers this year and so far i git them to about twelve feet!
I tend to plant what I eat to be honest. Well done on the sunflowers 👏👏
@@TheGreyGardener1990thank you! i plan on expanding my process with what ive learned from your videos
Do deer or critters come after these? Do I need to put a cage around them?
Not where I'm from but everywhere might be different.
What happens when the snap? Can I put them back in the ground an hope it roots?
Not sure, I doubt it but give it a try
U planted the seeds on my birth date.
But dear u didnt show the seeds look like actually.
❤ From India.
Hi, thanks for the advice, here's hoping, I have over 10 on tbe go never made one past 0.5m 😂What seeds do you use? Do you sell yours?
I don't sell them but these were giant sunflowers seeds. So if you want huge ones you'll Nedd the correct seed. Plenty giant varieties around if you give them a google
@@TheGreyGardener1990 thank you for letting me know so quickly :)
Hi, how can I get the seeds and are they good for oil production?
I think you want the black oil sunflowers. You will only find those in bird seed.
You said 30 ft. I believe that is incredible 🙌.
I've had 13 " across not a record but I didn't know much as now.12 and 14 ft are rare enough to have pride in.
I just put out some Mammoth Russian and this year I worked my compose in the bed and it will be fun to watch em grow hopefully over 9 ft like last season as I might have started later in the season.
Thanks
If mine goes over 14 I'll have a video
Can you grow these in pots outside handsome, or only smaller varieties?
If you did you'd have to have a quite a deep pot and be constantly feeding/watering every day, sometimes twice. I wouldn't recommend personally
I've got 50lt pots so hoping 🙏
@@Marcusjb82 Be interested to know how you get on mate
@@TheGreyGardener1990 I've planted a few some are going into the ground and some in pots I've gone for American giant will come back with the results end of the summer ☀️ 👍
U can, but u gotta use at least 20 gallon pots, and make sure to put at least an inch of mulch on top of the soil, that helps tremendously with watering. After you discover how much water a mulch layer saves, you won't go back.
😃🙏🏾❤️
I keep reading that you plant them out at 30cm tall? You plant them out at a smaller size.. Now I dont know what to think! aha, any advise?
I go by temperatures a lot of the time. If weather is decent you should be ok.
Can Sunflowers be grown in a North Facing Garden
Don't see why not 👍
Is that verity bigger then mammoth sunflower 🌻
I'm not sure 🤷♂️
I can't watch the full video yet so could someone please tell me how long it took before theirs germinated 😭
Mine were 4m at least last summer
👏👏👏
I have been trying two types of sunflower seeds and they never look anything like this. They shoot up as a white worm and just lie there at the top of the soil. Any ideas?
So they don't grow at all?
@@TheGreyGardener1990 no they do but it seems like the ”stem” grows up and out of the dirt until it falls over. Should I replant as soon as the green part (which is very tiny) shows?
@@jesperjee sounds like they could be not deep enough? Or pop a stake in the ground then dig your hole and pop it in tieing to the stake as they grow
I cut off the bottom yellow leafs is that bad???
I'm not entirely sure, they usually eventually die off. Time will tell, do everything you would have otherwise done and they may still be ok 👍
Not bad really, but when leaves are yellowing from the bottom upward, normally that is the plant moving nutrients from the older bottom to the younger, actively growing leaves and shoots. This doesn't necessarily mean the plant isn't healthy, but it usually does mean that the plant would appreciate a little nitrogen fertilizer. Usually. Try it taking baby steps. Test with a very tough plant you know you can't burn or don't mind over fertilizing. Or just start with a miniscule amount. Fast growing annuals like sunflowers can get by with surprisingly little nutrition, but often will really blow your mind if fed as much as the plant can digest without nutrient burn.
When should I sow seeds indoors for an early start? Midlands UK.
Any time from now I'd say you should be ok. I'm in Durham
You bury it pot and all?
I take it out of the small pot and plant it in the ground. Is that what you mean?
Can you provide its seeds, I am from India?
Which seed
Crazy that it was August and you are wearing sweats and a beanie
😆 ive been known to wrap up on warm days....sometimes accidentally!
@@TheGreyGardener1990 😆
Thise are so cool, too bad they don't last all year
Don't sunflowers usually kill other plants? I wouldn't plant them by any of my other crops.
All of my other fruit and veg were fine, so not too sure on that one
I'm wondering, are rodents attracted to the chicken pellets?
I wouldn't say so specifically that I'm aware of. They're everywhere though, so chances are they'll be walking amongst the veg during the night
@@TheGreyGardener1990 Thank you for replying. I don't mind them walking in the veggie garden, I just don't want to provide a food source from the chicken pellets.
@@michelebishop5799 no that's fair. I put them down every now and again and I don't think they get eaten
That looks like you're in another earth those are huge sunflowers lol
Not about height, maybe focus on world record seed production instead :-) healthy productive edible crop not excess right.?

Why aye man.

every part of the sunflower is edible..
I got a 16ft and I had to work with nothing bc I'm poor lol just saying
