  • Another adventure searching the grounds of Magnolia Lane Plantation. In this video Albert, Travis and I dig out some pits looking for evidence of old buildings that are not part of the official record of the home. We also continue to metal detect the yard area focusing on the side yards this time. We do discover some potentially interesting areas that may be of interest to future investigators when trying to piece together the history of this plantation. I find Brad's old sandbox and recover some long lost memories for him.

I remember back in the late 1960's and early 1970's always playing with my Hotwheels in the dirt. I'd make little roads and, if I had to move dirt to build a road through, I'd use firecrackers for it. My favorite place was a large hole where a stump was removed. During the hottest parts of the summer, that stump hole was filled with water and would sit in the mud within it. There are times when I miss the way life was 45 years ago... hooking up the horse to the carriage and trotting down the road, climbing trees, playing in the mud... There was a time I buried many coins in two locations when playing "pirate" but I never went back to dig them up. It would be fun to explore where I once lived though the house, built in 1901, is no longer there. Imagine the treasure that can be found there!

Now, it's kids that are saying, "aw mom, do I have to go outside?!" Oh, and the snow forts! Great times! We'd go to Monk's Mounds and sled down one of the mounds there. Or, diving off the CB tower into an 8 to 10 foot snow drift on the side of the house. Definitely a different time, a time well missed!

This has been so great to see this plantation and the artifacts you are finding, even if some are just more modern kids toys. I have been following along on your adventures while reading my hubbies 3rd grt. grandpa's Civil War letters. He was a surgeon with the 11th Indiana Vol. Inf. Reg. at Carrollton/ New Orleans in May of 1864. He didn't think much of General Banks, but had much respect for Grant. Having never been to New Orleans myself, it has been splendid to see the same country he would have been in and experienced as a soldier. I hope you do find more Civil War related items, but just seeing this place has been so interesting and enjoyable. It is so steeped in history. Thanks a bunch! Have a great day!

We have a small buried dump in our backyard, both from an old store that burned down and from relatives in the past. Back then garbage collection was limited and it was before environmental stuff was put into place. Also handing down toys or donating them wasn't as common. It was common to bury your garbage. We dug the hill up a little after removing tree's to re-level it, I was amazed by how many toys and stuff were in it. In fact they use to be toys from some relatives when they were kids. I found about 300 bottles/ jars in that hill in GOOD shape, while not very old they were still collectables. Some even had labels still on them because they were being protected by the old fabric trash bags.
