- This video explores the abilities, powers, and origin of the Marvel Comics character "Puck." From Eugene Milton Judd growing up as a giant athletic young man in Canada, becoming a mercenary that found the possessed Black Blade of Baghdad and absorbed the evil Black Raazer to contain the villain, gaining superhuman strength and longevity as well as durability and speed after this chance event, conversely shrinking to the size of a dwarf while enduring a constant pain from the process, having similar fighting skills to his long-time friend Wolverine, to thriving as the heart of superhero teams like Alpha Flight and Uncanny X-Force; Let's take a look at this classic Marvel superhero, and the resident little tough-guy of multiple Marvel teams. This includes a short, canon character biography and my own opinionated "Sage Rating," which I use to give ratings of comic book and science fiction characters.

I spoke with Puck creator John Byrne Back in one of the old Marvel chat rooms during the internet’s early days. He told me that Puck was never intended to be a super-powered being, but simply a highly trained little person. Byrne had even gotten praise and awards from Little People organizations for how he candidly showed the physically painful struggles many little people endure in life, and how he had created a cool hero representing people with dwarfism and so on. But Byrne had a famous falling out with Marvel and Jim Shooter, so as soon as Byrne had made his way over to DC, new writers of Alpha Flight sabotaged Puck -undoing everything that made him a relatable hero to little people. Byrne said he had still been following Alpha Flight (after all he created the team) even after he left Marvel. But he stopped reading them the day a new writer revealed that Puck was really a 7-foot tall man with an evil spirit inside him… instead of what he was intended to be; a normal human little person who had trained himself to be a super-skilled fighter.
That explains why my memory of the early Alpha Flight comics I collected back in the day didn't portray him as having super powers.

I'm currently reading John Byrne's Alpha Flight omnibus (which is awesome BTW) and its seems to depict Puck very clearly as being a highly trained normal guy with dwarfism. Essentially he's Batman with a little person condition. I like that way better than being a mutate.
Although he also says "eh" all the time, which gets annoying after awhile.

A well trained little person would be pretty useless.
I've only experienced Puck in Immortal Hulk and he is extra spicy in every scene he's in. We need more of Puck everywhere.

Not a huge fan of it over-emphasizing he fought alongside a bunch of nun-raping, body-desecrating anarchists. But there wasn't really a good side to find in that fight. I mean, maybe the Carlists.

WOW! Puck was markedly changed from his original inception. He was "just" a man with dwarfism who disciplined himself to become a top-level athlete, gymnast and, skilled fighter.

I've always loved Puck.
I loved this creation by Chris Clairemont and John Byrne.
I like Puck. I mean he's not the super mutant that we love to see, but I could see him in a X-MEN movie getting into some good fights..
He's not a mutant but a mutate, a human who's been changed. Like Spider-man.
Alpha Flight has always been underrated and they need a movie..
And in that movie Puck should be played by AEW wrestler John Silver.

You taught me a lot about Puck. The original Marvel Handbook said he had no super powers, was at the level of an Olympic athlete at peak conditioning. They must have reckoned him and created a new origin. Glad that did so. I am surprised he only received a 6 rating though. Thanks for doing this video on a character who never got enough exposure.
You can tell that Puck is REALLY from some type of inspiration of some dude that John Byrne saw, he wears a singlet that Olympic wrestlers do, wears ear guards, a chin guard, and he has Cauliflower ears.

The other time he got his height back was in a very fun Wolverine arc from the Hama/Silvestri run in which Logan and Puck were time displaced to the Spanish civil war. If you have Marvel Unlimited it's well worth the read.
