  • Curious to know what cross-country train travel looks like? I walked from one end of Amtrak's legendary California Zephyr train to the other, recording as many nooks and crannies as possible.
How big are the showers? How many bathrooms are in each car? Do I have to pay to eat in the dining car? I answer these questions, plus a lot more in this video.
    Facts About The California Zephyr:
•Service: Chicago, Illinois to Emeryville, California (San Francisco)
•Frequency: One Train in Each Direction Daily
    •Stops: 33
    •Distance Traveled: 2,438 miles
    •Eastbound Journey: 51 hours, 40 minutes
    •Westbound Journey: 52 hours, 10 minutes
Experienced travelers say the California Zephyr is one of the most beautiful train trips in all of North America. As you climb through the heart of the Rockies, and further west through the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas, you may find it hard to disagree. The Zephyr runs between Chicago and San Francisco, coursing through the plains of Nebraska to Denver, across the Rockies to Salt Lake City, and then through Reno and Sacramento into Emeryville/San Francisco. You can connect to San Francisco and Oakland stations via Thruway Bus Service at Emeryville, California.
Glide past - not above - amber waves of grain. Climb the magnificent Rockies and Sierra Nevadas and witness the power of the raging Colorado River. Cross the Continental Divide, and travel through tunnels and canyons. Marvel at the vivid hues of Utah’s deserts. There is simply no better way to experience the true majesty of America than from the ground up on Amtrak.

I took this from Chicago to Davis with my 6 year old daughter back in 2018. Even she wasn’t bored and even made friends with a couple of girls from South Korea that spoke no English. They kept busy playing in the snow at a couple of stops and showing them Uno.

Took this trip in late April. The scenery was incredible and we actually arrived in Emeryville ahead of schedule. If you go by train you must be flexible as quite often trains can be hours late. Unfortunately,I found my sleeper car to be very poorly maintained and quite dirty! I noticed a bad odor upon boarding in Chicago and service by the car attendant was very poor. I was supposed to return to Chicago on the Southwest Chief but it was cancelled do to a derailment. I was rerouted to Emeryville and returned on the Zephyr. This train was no cleaner than the one going west. I really don’t understand how all the bloggers can give such glowing reviews where my experience was so off the mark.

3:15 I'm surprised Amtrak doesn't use like a small door organizer, so it clears off the counter for passengers to set out their toiletries. Amtrak should enlist a Space Planner to make these updates.

Great video Kevin! I had no idea about all the different train compartments! Amtrak should hire you to do tours of all their routes! Awesome!

@@KevinAcrossAmerica It was a good video. I took the Zephyr in August of this year to Reno and had a great time.
      The scenery is awsome.

Looking at taking this train very soon. Enjoyed your video... The hallways do look very narrow on the train.

Most of the passage ways are pretty narrow, rooms are very small, place are not well organised, toilet is a no no, food doesn't look appetising ... overall ... I give a 2 stars out 5 (max) ... and most American felt this is a presentable train until they hitch a ride in a HSR in China.
It took 52 hours to finish the journey but for a Chinese it took less then 13 hrs.

Which Chinese train? When? What route? Is the track passenger rail only? Can you watch any video you like riding on a RED CHINESE train? RED CHINA is a genocidal dictatorship; I'll take a train in the land of the free and brave thank you very much. I imagine that you're having a hard time breathing because your head is shoved way too far up your asshole.
The Zephry is Scamtrak's most scenic route. It's slow, late, and dirty. The service is generally very good and the food is comparable to 1st class airline food. Getting from point A to B in a quick manner is not the intent of a trip on this route; fly if that's your intent. If you're intent is fine dining, go to Mortons or Ruth Chris.
And never ever look under a roomette seat
