  • Many have complained that the Nikon Z9, despite being a top tier camera is very noisy, especially at higher ISO's. Adjusting the sharpening settings in the Picture Controls makes a world of difference.

    I shoot raw, but before your comparisons I didn't realize how profoundly sharpening affects other areas of image quality. Thank you. Also, I too love the Z6 as a webcam. You can power it with a battery adapter, or upgrade to a Z6 II which will charge while recording.

    I saw your post in one of the Z9 forums and came to check out your analysis. I gave up on shooting jpegs with the Z9, but I'll give your suggestions a whirl at my next low-light sporting event.

    I've been VERY disappointed with the amount of noise when shooting 2500-5000. In fact I've been seriously thinking about selling it for a D6. I will try your settings.

    Thank you for your video! I noticed that I have to modify the tones on my photos out of the Nikon Z9. I never had that issue with our Canon R3, R5's or Fujifilm cameras. Do you recommend changing the midrange sharpening to improve tonal results? Do you know if the Fujifilm Picture Controls can be added to the Z9? Thank you. JP

    • @deovid
      @deovid  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Think the picture controls are designed so as not to influence each other so that variables remain consistent i.e. adjusting sharpening should have no discernible influence on colors or other parts of the image. You won't be able to add Fujifilm controls to the Z9. The only thing (I think) adjusting midrange sharpening can have an influence on in terms of tone is that tuning sharpening down might make look tonal gradations smoother esp. at higher ISOs. In turn this might have a subtle effect on the perception of colors and in any case it's worth trying out, you might get some surprising results (:

    • @deovid
      @deovid  Před rokem

      Also depends a bit on the lens you use. Very sharp lenses can get away with very little in camera sharpening and thus you will be able to use this technique to make images appear less noisy. With lenses that are less sharp photos look better with some degree of in camera sharpening and you will have to accept a bit more apparent noise. At the end of the day it pays to have good lenses B-)

      @@deovid I'm mainly using the Z100-400 lens, which seems very sharp to me, so hopefully I can get away with less in-camera sharpening.

    but changing sharpness only affects on jpeg, not raw, it's right?

    • @deovid
      @deovid  Před 5 měsíci +1

      With jpegs it will be baked in. With RAW, if you open them in the Nikon software you will see the same sharpening as applied in camera and can then save it as a "baked in" file. If you open the RAW file in LR for example you will not see the same sharpness settings applied.

  • @ranaded
    @ranaded Před rokem

    Does this apply to RAW also or just for JPEG?

    • @shanejones40
      @shanejones40 Před rokem +2

      As this relates to Picture Controls it should only apply to JPEG. So to the points by the presenter about "to have the best possible image to work with later, and especially to rescue an image if it is underexposed or overexposed, etc..." the next thing said should have been, shoot in RAW.

    • @deovid
      @deovid  Před rokem

      This test just to JPG. Can imagine it also applies to RAW but if there would be any possibility to change it after the fact it would probably only be possible in Nikon software and not LR of any other since it's a very specific parameter.

  • @RayJustice
    @RayJustice Před rokem

    is this setting just for high iso images? What if you were in studio at base iso 64 or even iso 100, would you still need these settings or would you want a different mix of settings at base iso? Can you also test at base iso? Thanks

    • @deovid
      @deovid  Před rokem

      The effect of these settings are most noticeable at ISO 6400 and above when the camera starts to get noticeably more noisy. That said images will look smoother at pretty much any ISO with these settings because there will be less artifacting visible. You might want to adjust the basic sharpening and the mid-range sharpening just a bit for lower ISO's as images may come out looking a bit too "smooth" for your liking but it can also be exactly what you need if you want very smooth looking skint tones straight out of the camera.

  • @dkastra26
    @dkastra26 Před rokem

    but all you have done you can do it later in Lightroom too?! when you smoothen your picture profile you can see later in Lightroom clarity -10 or else

    • @deovid
      @deovid  Před rokem +2

      When these settings are used on jpg's any Lightroom settings will affect them differently as when these settings have not been applied. With these settings applied you'll get a smoother, less grainy image that requires less LR post processing. If you try to mitigate noise and artifacts in LR with the regular settings then LR will apply that on top of any existent noise/grain/artifacts and the image will not be as detailed.

      @@deovid sorry, I mean raw... all the settings I changed in camera are on the raw in Lightroom like I said before. in camera clarity -3 is in Lightroom automatically set to -10 or else

    • @deovid
      @deovid  Před rokem

      @@dkastra26 With RAW files of course everything can be changed after the fact though I suppose it depends on how much time you want to spend post processing. If you know how you want your pictures to look SOT, even when shooting RAW then it will save you time doing USM / clarity adjustments etc. later.

    • @dkastra26
      @dkastra26 Před rokem

      @@deovid no because if i want less noise i set it as in your Video But when i have iso 100 or less i have a picture who is too smooth and i have to tweak in the opposite direction. Its the same i think.

    • @deovid
      @deovid  Před rokem

      @@dkastra26 Depending on your taste you could have multiple profiles for different ISO's. Also keep in mind that your eyes adjust to the picture so if something looks too smooth at first it could be because your eyes and your brain are used to a more granular image, a more processed image but once you shoot with settings with lower sharpening after a while you get used to it and it actually looks really nice and not too smooth.
