- We explain 4 alternate methods and explain settings for how to hook up a TV set top box to an AV surround sound home theater receiver. These methods can work for any cable tv set top box, satellite box or telephone company box such as Dish Network, DirecTV, Uverse, Xffinity, Cox Cable, Mediacom, etc.

Thank you for making this video...I have been trying to get my Yamaha set up for years, and have watched many videos..this finally solved my connection problems...excellent video, easy to follow :)
Thank you for your video. It was clear & concise & so easy to follow. You helped me to sort out connections for the Vodafone STB connection via AVR to the TV.
awesome vlog about the basics 👍🏼
Thank you very much for this excellent video. This presentation with your other, how to set-up TV to AV receiver resolved all of my problems. Thanks again for your help.

You have no idea how much you helped me!!!!! I can't believe how I was trying to do this now that i see the correct way (I would plug an HDMI Cord into the TV box and then to the back of the surround sound box and then wonder why the heck it wasn't working.....I didn't think that I would THEN have to connect a cord from the box to the back of the TV!!!!!) VERY DUH kinda moment from me.So thank you again so very much.
Thank you for watching the video. Glad it helped :)
I have one led television with 2 hdmi connection and one hdmi arc connection. No optical output in television. And also I am using one dth HD set top box with optical connection and hdmi. I have the your best av receiver with 5.1 features yamaha yht 1840. Please help to connect these devices for better output in my HD channel?
Omg John I did the same thing and was SO frustrated that it wasn't working 😂😂.
Thank you! This helped me and I’m all set up now!
Thank you , fixed my issue once I watched your video ,
Very useful basic setup information, Thanks.
Thank you for your clear and concise video. It is greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks ! Just what I was looking for .
Finally, I now know how to set up my direct tv box and tv to my Avr receiver! Thanks!
Superb... explained well. Helped a lot. Thank you👍👍
Thanks for this video! We need to send tv audio to zone 2 on our new Denon AVR S960H HEOS receiver. The techs had it working when they left, but after I played music on HEOS and switched back to play tv audio thru zone 2, it’s now now working. 🤷♀️
on dennon remote press zone 2 and select your source, try sat/cab or tv audio ....if you use HEOS mobile app, look for zone 2 or stop party mode (play on all speakers)
Thanks, I happen to have same Yamaha receiver I forgot about hdmi output from amp, I phoned the cable company and they were useless. They kept saying you have to connect hdmi from box to your cpu. :) :) :)
Can I or should use a optical audio cable with my hdmi cable, connecting my cable box to avr?
These scenarios all require the receiver to be on with the sound coming through external speakers. Is there a way to hook this up if you just want to listen to the TV through it’s own speakers with the receiver off?
Hey. Not sure if you’re still checking comments for this video or not. But if so, I’ve got my Harmon Kardon avr240 hooked to the set top box via component cables and optical, but what connects to the tv? Receiver doesn’t have an HDMI out. RCA cables? Thanks
I to was help by your video,Thanks for your assistance
Very good instruction. Do you offer a video on how to get sound from apps on the smart TV to the surround sound speakers? I haven't been able to figure that out. I'm only getting TV speaker sound.
Use the ARC hdmi on the back of your tv:)
HDMI is the only way if you have up to date tv equipment etc. IMHO everything else is obsolete now that we have a minimum of 1080p or 4K. It’s just that it’s a constant bout of ongoing education when it comes to hooking up many video and audio components. Even experienced folks can become baffled at the different ways to hookup many types of units. And that it’s probably important to have a receiver that can pass through HD or 4K if you’re not wanting to just use the TV picture and sound only. I do and it becomes somewhat of a complex topic at times. But the technology has catapulted to new heights in the past 30 yrs. it’s mind boggling.
Thank you 😊
how do you connect video with 4th alternative as you just show audio cable connections

I recently came across a new, boxed VCR/DVD player and wanted to know how to connect it to my Denon receiver? I tried using the rca yellow-red-white cables, but can't get an audio/video signal.
Thank you. This helped a lot and I was able to correct my set up. I’m able to see and listen through the sat/catv hdmi port. Unfortunately I don’t get sound when I launch an app like Netflix. The sound from the cable stations continue to play. What am I doing wrong?
Hi , I’m having the exact same problem! Were you able to find a solution? I launch Netflix app on tv and get picture but audio is sat/cable. Thank you!!
@@hotguy1269 oh jeez, it’s been so long and I should know. I was so frustrated I ended up buying the Logitech harmony 665 remote (you can buy it but it’s discontinued) and programmed everything through it. Meaning I programmed Netflix as a favorite following the steps and I believe I selected my av receiver for audio. It seems archaic even back then having to connect the remote to your computer but works for me. I later learned that xfinity could have walked me through this whole thing with their remote (programming the A,B,C or D buttons). Lol! I’m good with my Logitech for now.
Thanks brother
I have avr134 and unable to setup with jbl cinema 300 home theater system. Can you help me???
I will be highly obliged to you.
Whats a set top box? The cable box?
I have an Xfinity set top box and when I watch cable TV I get sound out of my surround sound speakers without any issues using the HDMI cable connection method. I have a new Hisense U7 smart TV and when I want to watch Amazon Prime using my smart TV, the sound from my cable box never shuts off. I hear sound out of my surround sound speakers and I hear sound from my TV speakers for Amazon Prime Video movies at the same time. I've tried every setting on my Denon receiver and my TV and I can't figure out how to fix this issue.
is it okay to use HDMI from CABLE BOX to TV, then OPTICAL CABLE to old school receiver for the AUDIO?
Yes
I still can't make it work, i bought an optical cable to connect from Telus 4K box (VIP5602W) to Marantz ER2500 -- but still no sound out, Samsung TV im using is LN46E550F6FXZA that 2 HDMI and AV in only..
👌
I plugged in my HDMI cable from the cable company box into my AV/Receiver and then a HDMI to the new TV and the TV set sees no signal but i can get the blu- ray player to work?? Whats up with that?
I have connected my av recerver x2700h to my tv with hdmi cable, I have not connected speakers , bot no sound on my tv. is not possible to get sound using hdmi cable ? please help me.
And just what does connecting from the tv set top box to an av receiver do?
How do you connect a boombox to my RCA tv
Hii sir
I have tata sky setup box and in that box i have only one hdmi so how can i setup with my yamaha 6030 reciver
I can't seem to find the solution to the most basic issue here: I have xfinity/Mediacom on their "Tivo" settopbox and it is connected to my Yamaha receiver. I cannot get picture or audio unless (1) turn on the TV with the Mediacom remote and then (2) turn on the AV receiver to supply picture and sound. Why can't I get the remote to turn on all of the TV, Picture, and sound?
What about arc
What still confuses me is whether the data cable from your router goes into the cable box or the back of receiver. I'd think it's the latter because that is hub point of the system.
none of these work with xfinity cable box to the Marantz av7705 pre-amp get video but still no sound
I have Xfinity modem box without HDMI or optical cord what to do
How to connect setupbox to receiver and MI 32 in TV without HDMI
Hola
set top box not recording What the problem I have a FAT32usb2.o connected nothing . box shows insert USB device. What went wrong.
Is there any reason why I am getting no video to my tv. Using hdmi method
The settings on your equipment are maybe not set correctly
@@Allabouthomeelectronics
I have hdmi in from an Xbox, I have also tried with my cable box. Both input into an hdmi port. I then go from hdmi out to tv input and I get no screen. Yamaha htr-5063. I have the input selected on receiver to hdmi2- and tv source on the hdmi setting. What is wrong
@@Allabouthomeelectronics also, I hear the sound coming from the speakers so I know the reciever is getting the input. However the tv screen gets no video. My guess is the hdmi outport is bad.
You’ve tried both the Xbox and cable box plugging the hdmi into hdmi 2 in back of HTR? And the HTR hdmi out to TV hdmi 1 and set HTR to 2 and tv to 1 and get nothing?
@@Allabouthomeelectronics correct. I have also tried other variations with different cables, different hdmi inputs and different tv sources. All my htr inputs work because I get sound on all inputs but no video from the htr output
So uh, what if my home theater only has one HDMI port ._.
I can't even get my freaking internet radio to work
I can't either
