Sanctions (please note the difference-not divestment) may have worked in speeding the end of apartheid, which notably was already unwinding from within precisely because it was bad for business and a large number of white South Africans were against it. But what sanctions most assuredly did was severely damage South Africa’s capital base. The work of centuries were undone in just a few years. And unfortunately, the damage that was caused never repaired. That’s the history. We can debate whether that was the optimal outcome in the long term.
