      And Capture One Pro took it one step further that they do offer one time buy, but then you will not get any future updates, despite paying a premium 350 dollars for it. Or you can opt for the 20 dollars/month subscription - MORE expensive than lightroom + photoshop (photo bundle)

  • @arnonart
    @arnonart Před 8 měsíci +10

    I'm using rawtherapee. I'm on Linux so the open source editors are my only option. However, there is no difference in the results compared to any of the subscription programs. My main goal is not to manipulate but to restore the photos and bring back what was there at the time of shooting. When I work with layers I work with gimp which is enough for me. Not only in the field of photography, but many others, people tend to believe if they don't have the best top notch they are restricted and limited. It's not true. I won a huge photo competition in 2004 with a photo I took on film back in 85 with a modest camera and El cheapo zoom lens. The imagination is what counts.

    My main beef with cross platform software is that they largely don't adhere to native UI standards, are often inconsistent in their use of layouts, icons, controls, panels and other UI elements, and generally look messy (non-aligned labels, group boxes galore, poor color schemes, etc.). They also offer little or no integration into the ecosystem, like having to find your desktop under /Users/uid/Desktop instead of providing a shortcut, lacking the Mac-native share options, etc. To me, it feels like I have to fight these apps every step of the way.

    I used RawTherapee for quite some time, but along the way I started getting annoyed how it's not a simple program to do quick edits. The batch editing can be very useful for some people, I only had lightroom for the trial time years ago and I remember it being REALLY intuitive and for me that's what was missing in Raw Therapee, DarkTable seems better on that so I'll take a look at it for when I need more editing options. Now a day I have an Android emulator on my PC and use Photoshop, lightroom and Snapseed there to do pretty much anything I usually need, it's been great for me, just in case someone else might want to try. ;)

      Thanks very much Thamires! I was thinking there wasn't any video that went more in-depth into the actual use of the programs...I tried them all out, but I think a lot of the comparison videos and blogs just find a list of free ones and then copy the marketing material...it did take a while, and I was getting frustrated quite a lot by different quirks and inconsistencies with the different programs...
      RAW Therapee did seem very detailed and like you said, no real way to do quick edits. DarkTable had a better library system but again, very easy to get lost in all of the changes you can make.

      @@mikesphotography Thanks to you too! I have tried a lot of applications: On1, Capture One, Silkypix, Luminar Ai and Luminar 4, LR , Bridge and Photoshop , Exposure 5, Photoscape, Raw Therapee and Dark Table, I pefer Raw Therapee from both of those two, cause it works better on my Imac, but if you are for Fuji raf files, the best ones are : Silkypix (for its ease of use and then convert to tiff) Capture one, as you can do all in it , unless you want to go on editing and then you go to Photoshop (never tried Gimp) On One, a bit more cumbersome, but still able to reveal good photos, and Raw Therapee (complex learning but totally worth the effort) For my canon, I used a lot of DxOptics, simple and very capable (it adds Nik collection if you want) , and Lr but then I have to use a Denoise program, my favourite is Topaz .Photoscape is a bit of a simple program but very capable if you are using the mac version, though it's not for a very professional work. Luminar, only used for certain effects, kind of a bit of mist or sunrays added to a photo, so this is my own list hahaha , I hope it might help you too!!! Best regards from Uruguay.

      It definitely sounds like Adobe isn't the best option for you then.
      I'm using it on a daily basis so for me it's a bargain as it makes my job a lot easier, but if you're not using it, then there's no point paying for it. 👍

    I'm sorry, but it's there a reason your intro music is at twice+ the volume of your voice? A lot of us find that pretty painful.

    Am I the only one who doesn't understand how to import images on RawTherapee for Mac? Damn, I feel dumb

      In the column on the left hand side, all you need to do is find and click on your folder where the images are. Then double click on the image you want to open in the main viewer.
      czcams.com/video/Vmmc7f117SM/video.html This guy covers it a little bit in this video.
      I hope that helps. 👍

    I've pirated Lightroom. I might use these as safer and more legal alternatives...

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Před rokem

      Sounds like a good idea ... also, you don't get the latest version when pirating lightroom, whereas some of these are shareware and so you will get the best they have to offer.
      Thanks for watching 😁👍

    hahaha 16:30 why add a technical issue in your video. Maybe try to fix it and look what the issue is, or don't add it in the video. That was useless.
    Seems quite lazy to add a 5th program you couldn't even bother to get to work.
    But overall a nice video!

    I HATE shortcuts ! A software program should always be easy to use without shortcut !!!

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Před 2 lety

      Programs are so complex these days that shortcuts are the only way to manage the thousands of different commands.

      @@mikesphotography No, not for me, mouse, curser and remember where to go. There are too many shortcuts and they are different for most programs
