DJI Action 2 Long Term Review | 6 Months Later

- This is my long-term review of the DJI Action 2 after using it extensively over the past 6 months. This tiny modular action camera was met with skepticism and negativity when it was launched due to its many limitations that can be frustrating if you want a full action camera. However, this camera has some unique features that make it one of the best POV and wearable cameras on the market and for that, it has become one of my most used cameras when filming content and B-Roll for my CZcams channels. In this video, I go over all the things I love about the DJI Action 2 and a few limiting factors that you should be aware of.

I really enjoy your follow up reviews. They have really helped me to figure out how products have held up. I’m looking forward to the Dji mic as well. Thank you!!!
Nice long term update 👍Thanks for providing the link to that aftermarket mount.
Nice long term review of the Action 2, and I'm glad you have been able make it part of your workflow. I keep thinking I should order one, but I'm not really a POV type shooter, so I don't know what niche it can really fill for me. But I know it's the perfect size for many users, and it's great we have so many choices in small pocket cameras these days. Great video Shawn, and thanks for sharing.
Very good summary. Note that the extra mics are only on the screen module, not the battery-only module. And the range of audio devices and adapters that can be connected to the USB-C port is considerable. I don't think there's any other camera of any type or price which offers USB-C audio support.
Besides dropping and denting the battery adapter, I’d say the camera is very useful and I agree that it would have been better if they just had the one camera module. Sometimes I find myself just wishing I could just bring that with me without having to worry about the other components. All that said, I don’t regret purchasing it and will continue to use it. Great video also.
I absolutely love my Action 2. I didn't think I would like it as much as I do. Like you, I don't use it for long recordings. I mainly use it for 15 seconds or less clips. The sabilization is second to none. The video quality is excellent. Image falls apart in low light, unfortunately. But all in all it is great. My one complaint isn't overheating, it is actually when using it in the cold. The screen shuts off when recording in cold temps. Anything below 40F out and the screen will shut down. Very frustrating in the winter months. But yeah it is overall a great little camera.
I've been using DJI Action 2 for 3 months and I love it so muchhhh
Thank you for this honest review! Just bought mine and I feel even better about my purchase now :)
Thank you and enjoy your new camera
Great video Shawn! The fact that the camera is a sealed unit and you cannot replace the front cover/ lens cover is a bummer. As a content creator, the size and weight of it are very atttactive. Not to mention the versatility of the magnetic bottom with the various accessories you showed.
Thanks for an honest impression
Just bought an Action 2 and this review was very reassuring. Thank you.
how do you like it so far?
Great review. Much appreciated
Thank you again Shawn. This is a great update. I'm just getting used to the Action 2 and am finding it useful.
Thanks Marcus. I do enjoy using it I find both go pro hero 10 and action 2 Both have their strengths and weaknesses. But I have found myself using my action 2 a little more recently these days. I tend to wear my canera when filming b-roll so I like how it’s not so bulky and heavy however the video quality on the hero 10 is a little better I think
shawn, thanks for the honest and helpful review!
Thank you and thanks for watching
Excellent review. You have helped me understand its limitations and best use! Thanks, T
Thank you
I have had it for about 6 months also. Bought it last year in early December. Been very happy so far. The only problem I have had is cold weather. It stops recording when it gets too cold. It does not have to be very cold a few degrees below zero is enough to stop the recording. It is ok for about 15 to 20 minutes, but after that it needs to be warm again.
That is typical of batteries in cold weather. The little battery will cool down pretty quickly. This is a battery issue, not a camera issue as such.
My comment was in the context of “below zero”. I am also thinking in Fahrenheit not Celsius. I agree 100% that 40 f is. not particularly cold.
Well done! Love the Action2
Thank you for your long term update. It's nice to get a good honest opinion. It has been hard to get accurate info in my research due to all the paid reviews comparing this camera to the Insta360 Go 2. I am sure that camera is very good, but I think I am ultimately going to go with the DJI.
I have been very pleased with it and I use it for recording a lot of my CZcams videos and B roll. I also like to mount it on my E bike and capture some of my adventures. Works great and it’s nice and compact
Perfect to the point video. Definitely helped me make my decision, thank you!
Glad I could help!
Can't wait for this one. Ok watching💙💙👍👍
This looks awesome I want one
Thank you once again Sean.
Thanks for the great follow up. I have the action 2 and it works great for me as a helmet/ chest/ and handlebar B-Roll camera. It compliments my RS 4k boost and 360 X2 nicely. You didn't mention that Smallrig also makes some excellent magnetic UV and ND filters for the Action 2. This fact and the Smallrig USB-C charging mount that you showed, were the deciding factors that made this purchase a no-brainer for me. I only use the power mod to download video from the Action 2 to my card, thus freeing up my A2 for more shooting. Love your channel. G
Indeed smallrig actually has quite a few nice accessories
Why you need to use the power mod for this? Is there something I missed?
PS. trying to gather info before deciding whether to buy it.
Spot on, as always
best review of all.
Great video!!! I was initially going to buy this camera, but decided against it due to its limitations.
Thanks Shawn, great video as usual. You are someone who’s opinion I trust as you’re not affiliated to DJI(at the time of recording anyway but I’m sure they’d love to get you onboard 😂). Thanks for the links as well👍
Great review
Excellent reviews.
I see you have done time-lapse with Gopro 10 but have you done any with the Action 2?
It looks neat
Agreed with everything you said, noted you had not mentioned micro SD tho... Basically I use it as an extra close in camera if needed to show hard to get in shots, the square build is very handy as you dont need a tripod, apart from that its GoPro10 I use mostly, specially now I was able to get the new Enduro battery in Australia, also media mod has awesome sound.
Btw, I got all these new accessories for Action 2 that I'm not even using, remote stick etc... must try my Rode video-mic ii as usb on Action 2, just to look see...
As much as I find the idea of "off-you-go-filming" (pick it up and hit record) great, imho the best functionality comes with the Mimo app, which has all the controls and can record live from a distance. You're absolutely not bound to the camera's whereabouts. With a GoPro (and its app), you have to press the button on the camera, or hit record on the app on a blank screen. - My question about the SmallRig: can you download the footage from the camera using the usb-c cable?
Excellent review, Shawn. I found the Action 2, as you mentioned, great for POV. The magnetic mount allows easy switching between helmet, bike handlebar, and selfie stick. Go Pro may learn from this design and bring back a Session that's lighter in weight. I found my Go Pro 8 is slightly clearer and more colorful than the Action 2, but they are close. DJI sent me a questionnaire about the Action 2, indicating they are interested in improving it. I asked for a small waterproof door as the Session has, to keep a micro SD card and small battery. That would make it the best darn POV camera, period. Thanks for your well-done video, Shawn.
Thank you for your feedback it’s always nice to hear others opinions as well
Hi, where did you get the hike handlebar ?
@@XGARXS Hi Edgar, sorry, I didn't buy an Action 2 handlebar mount, I made a mount from aluminum that the DJI magnetic mount is screwed to.
I was looking at this over purchasing a old Go Pro session 4 but the lack of an SD card does kinda kill it for me despite all the other advanced features
Completely agree on the missed opportunity of them selling just the camera itself as a standalone option. Would be more appealing to me to get into the ecosystem and then possibly adding the extras in future.
except that, as designed, without the battery/screen module, you would have no way to charge or download video since there isn't a USB port on the camera. But I do agree...that would be nice...but so would making the mandatory add-on waterproof like the rest of the "action camera". That may sound like I'm down on the camera, but I'm actually about to purchase one today....just checking updated reviews first.
I have had the action cam 2 for a few months and really like it. Fun to mount on the hood of a truck for road shots. Cheers!
Indeed thanks for sharing your feedback
Fantastic review thanks, I was on the fence about getting one between this and the Gopro 10.
My only concern was the overheating but the cover has helped my worries.
Thanks
Same concern here, the only thing I worry is actually just the overheating, people say that act2 stop working after a few minutes, but its really a compact and high resolution stuff😢 so I really dont know, did you buy it?
@@ashan4759 I just did and I don’t regret it.
You are never going to record long videos of 4K 120 anyways, and they have already adresses the problem with updates and the casing.
It’s an awesome camera which I can’t wait to use!
Thank you, for options to keep it. The overheating worries. $500+ gadget must work.
Good video and update Shawn
Thank you
Nice information....
Hi good review. Just want to ask, is it okay to charge it in powerbank while using it?
Thank you for this update! I plan on using it as a wearable camera for work via the neck strap. Can you wear the camera w/ the battery on the neck strap? Also...does the overheating issues change when you film in 2k or 1080p? Thanks again!!
I was in love with the FPV of the Insta360 go2 image until I bought this. I still use the insta more just because of the case features
Many thanks for you honest & thorough review. I am tempted to get this as if us on sale on Amazon Australia for A$375 as i would use it alongside my GoPro 10 & Insta G0 2 that i attach cameras to RC aircraft for my youtube channel. The GoPro 10 used for head-cam & larger planes & Go2 for smaller ones, so shooting for only 3-4 min duration on each flight position re the over heating problem, would not be an issue.
Di you use a screen protector?
Regards & thanks
Bellairvideo
Hi Shawn just a follow up regarding the lanyard pov, I had the camera lock on so the video was upside down 😱 thanks again. Barry Spain 🇪🇸
I want to pick this up here for DJIs sale!!!
Question when using the second screen vs the power is the audio any better because i understand there is more pics?
I've yet to get on, I intend to use it as a POV cam. How reliable is it not falling off when mounted on the chest mount?
I bought the dual screen kit at launch, recently bought the power combo. One I use for vlog recording (not this account) the other is on my bike for cycling content. Been happy with both and while accessories are made they're hard to find on Amazon I find, which is a bummer at times when I find something I want but have to wait a month or more to be able to buy.
Best way to use/mount for motorcycle footage/trips/adventures?
Which is better
Good job
Hi
I have 2 as well, use in pendant mode or dash cam.
No probs
Thanks
Any tips on brightening up the video? It looks a bit dark in a lot of reviews.
Shawn when you add the third party magnet adapter with the fingers that close up... Can you use the type c to pull the content from the internal storage of the camera and export to the computer etc etc thx buddy
Mikey
It's power only.
Even though you can put a microphone on the action 2 I think the onboard microphones are excellent. Another excellent video Shawn thanks.
I agree with you 100% I stated that in another video I think that I feel it has the best audio on any action camera I’ve used 👍
@@AirPhotography keep it going Shawn, I enjoy your very way of explaining things🙏🙏
Using it for mountain biking. Like you, I also bought 2 units for front and rear facing recording. 2 camera on my helmet feels so light. Much lighter then using 2 GoPro.
Indeed
I've throughly enjoyed my dji action 2. It's been great for my motorcycle photos and videos. Also great for secret rollercoaster recording 🤣
Lol indeed
How do you mount it and where...for your bike trips/adventures? Thanks!
@@JQUICK21 by helmet chin bar. You can find mounts on amazon.
@@Max.527 And what exactly is "secret rollercoaster recording"? 🤔🤔🤔
@@a.k.3659 Phones and cameras are not allowed on rollercoasters. Dji action 2 is very small and can hide
Can you specify how long you can record before it heats up and stops recording ?
Nice video, are you going to make a video about DJI Mini 3 Pro?
Yes indeed I have several videos planned still waiting for them to arrive in North America
Would you recommend this for travelers who wants to record their travel
Great video, a quick question. when you are Vlogging with the camera module does the screen stay on or can it be turned off?
You can turn it off.
You have the option for both
Question: What is the time limit of recording until it gets too hot to use?
I have the first DJI action cam, the one designed like a Gopro but I like the DJI 2 for it's size
would like to know before I purchase it, if I have enough recording time before it gets heated up
This question. Also, what is the highest quality that you can record if you want to longer without overheating? 1080p120fps for 30min for example?
I like your both hands. So fluffy 😅
Hi I’m looking for something to record my barbering while cutting is this a good camera for the job and close up action?
agreed, the camera module with more internal memory. Its small memory is so limiting to almost be useless on its own.
Guess what? The Action 2 now has 128GB of memory in the camera module. Wish granted! And the price is not higher. Brand new.
What resolution are the photos & are they any good
It's same as Hero Session 4/5... which GoPro didn't continue...
With nice rough case it looks much much better than Session
I've Session 4 - and ordered DJI Action II hope not to get disappointed :)
best camera for FPV freestyle
Sean, Love the follow-up style video for a new technology item to see how you actually use it. As for me, I ordered the Action 2 at launch, just did not connect with it and sent it back. I have been trying to use a GP Hero10, but it also has limitations. Once I got the DJI Mic and discovered how great a product it is, I have been considering trying the Action 2 again. I really agree that it is poorly marketed, and should be considered more of a vlogging camera. I know you released this video 3 months ago, but I have gone back to it a couple of times, and just decided to order the Action 2 again. Cheers.
nice video sr, i dont know if you have the dji mic already but if you do, does it work with the battery module? or do you need the screen module to get it to work? thank you for your reply in advance
Yes, indeed this will work by plugging it into the version with the battery module. You don’t need the dual screen for it to work.
DJI Action 2 is compatible with DJI mic? will it do a review with both products?
I really enjoying watching your videos . Could you please check if the external mic work on this mouting plate ? Or only work from battery unit
You mentioned that you can charge the camera from it but it's not clear from your video if you can also can connect external microphone directly to this little camera mount .
Only the battery unit. The small rig port is only for charging, not even data transfer.
my mimo app is not exporting 4k files to 1080 or even in HD showing exporting failed ,why?
Seeing posts of (not great in colder weather) ok... how abuot -10 deg C will it work for at least 10 minutes at that temperature or no??
it is recording in H.265 so my mobile and computer is not playing it properly, can we switch from h.265 to h.264?
Wish I could buy just the camera part and treat it like a gopro session.
Tks👍
Because it's small, wearable, attachable, and capable, this is prolly the best action cam for me.
Indeed. Same reasons why I like it
How's the battery backup without any attachment ?
Is this camera still worth the purchase in late 2022 going into 2023? Or would you suggest waiting for the Action 4? Also, do you think DJI will release another Action 2 just call it something different in 2023? I am looking for a small camera with the magnets that has slightly longer run time and storage options than the Insta360 GO 2. I love my GO 2 I just wish it had more storage and at least 5 more mins of run time before it over heats and cuts off. But, I have learned to record shorter clips and I love the fact that it has its own battery case.
Honestly i just bought and from what I can tell it is a lot better than 360
Being able to use the versatility of a small action camera which can record for an hour by itself, and then boost it with the screen module or battery module whilst also transferring and adding ssd storage is on another level.
For my part, I honestly think it’s awesome, and a nice addition to the osmo 1
didnt know about the free case so i checked my dji account and there it was
Has anyone managed to find a waterproof housing for this camera that you can use with the magnetic case on? I just got DJIs one and am really disappointed that I'd have to keep taking the case on and off to put it in the waterproof housing.
Can you film 1080p/30 non-stop without overheating?
Nice video mate! Im really 50-50 about this camera. so many people like this camera and some hate it!. lol well i can't decide between gopro hero 8 and the action 2 for my fpv drone! how long you can film 4k 60fps?
It can really depend on the ambient temperature outside I have recorded for as long as an hour but also as little as 20 minutes. And you’re right it’s a very controversial camera some love it some hate it I for one have been really enjoying it. Now rumor has it that there’s gonna be an action 3 In September they’re going back to the old design. But that is just rumor
Thanks for the review.
My impression is that you can't really use this camera for extreme sports such as skiing and you have to be gentle with the camera. It seems the recording time is too short with just the body but if you attach the power module to the body then it's more likely you would lose them when you take a fall skiing. If you can only use it when you are walking around, it seems everything Action 2 could do could be done just as good on a phone with a good camera? I've been eyeing on DJI action camera for a while, but I honestly wish they released an upgraded version of the Osmo Action, I would even buy it now if it's priced reasonably, it's too expensive for an old model of a few years old.
Any other action cameras you would recommend for recording skiing, hiking, tennis ?
With Prime days on while I write this, I find myself thinking the same thing; can't my Galaxy S22Ultra do the same damn thing? Maybe even better?
It was 250$ off on Prime Days in Canada last week.
After playing with it for a week, it is excellent for biking footage. It came with a case from DJI and I got a third party screens protectors. It sustained its first tumble on the bike yesterday. I forgot to put the pin back (i use my GoPros accessories with it) and it detached itself the first jump I took. Nothing happened. Maybe I'm just lucky. But so far, it feels sturdy. If the magnetic clipping system feel too insecure at some point, i might get one of those cage which wrap the whole camera with a GoPro connector.
when will you review and unbox the mini 3 pro?
Hopefully soon North America release date isn’t until the end of the month it’s very aggravating lol
Any idea if DJI is working on the next version i-e Action 3?
There is no follow-up of the form factor of the Action 2. 3 and 4 are just like GoPro's. But, there is a new version of the Action 2 - with 128GB's of storage in the camera module, at the same price. So, it is a current model, just with a lousy name.
When you wanna do the beginner guide on mini 3
I am looking for a camera for go karting for small videos. Would you decide to choose this or a go pro
I guess it all boils down to personal preference I’ve been very pleased with my action 2. It works for me and how I use it both cameras would do the job nicely
It's available for a pretty good price now, so I've purchased one just now; the insta360 go3 is too expensive for my taste and still not the same image quality. It's odd they didn't market this more against the Go 2 as you say.
Very nice!
I am here for the same reason and I think I might buy the dji action 2 as I already have osmo pocket 1, 2 but the Insta Go 3 is too much...
The biggest downfall for me is that it’s webcam capable, but no USB-C to HDMI adapter works. It’ll be nice to have this as another camera angle when I’m recording with my ATEM Mini Pro.
Then how is it webcam capable? 🤔🤔🤔
@@a.k.3659 , USB-C
Just another thing, just got a ND 16 they are not safe are they, it pops off so easy, not good at all.
Have you been able to get a mini 3 yet
Not yet, apparently mine will be shipped out on the 26th so near the end of the month I should have it
What other alternatives are there? I need a really good compact camera for 4k vlogging but battery life is my buggest concern. A couple of hours wont do.
There’s really not a lot of options no action cameras have a great battery life. However you could always pick up something like a battery bank handle they can really extend the life of the Action Camera
@@AirPhotography Thanks!
Hey Shawn, just found your videos while trying to choose between a GoPro Hero 8 (yes 8) and the DJI Action 2. They are around the same price level here in Germany and I thought a long time that the DJI will be a no brainer over the GoPro Hero 8. Then I heard alot about the overheating issues and leaned more towards the GoPro. With your videos I'm in team DJI again. :D
As I think we have nearly the same use cases (more using it as a handy camera to record life instead of really using the "action" in action cam) and you using both of them (even two of both): What's your suggestion? Should I stick with the DJI? I'm a little bit afraid to take this cam on my trip to the maldives if it's overheating alot.. Especially underwater.
Thanks in advance! Keep up the great work :)
If it can help you. There is a heatwave right now where I live. Yesterday, i got my first overheating problem with the DJI Action 2. I was filming in 4K in direct sunlight and after 4min28sec of filming, the camera shut off. It was 35°C outside. I usually just shoot short clips (between 30secs and 1min30secs) and overheating has never been an issue so far. For "memories" shot around 1-2min, the camera is perfect. If you want to film for extended time (for example, an interview with someone) in a hot place, the camera isn't for you.
Yeah that’s a really tough call. Myself I don’t do a lot of extended recording but for my CZcams channel sometimes I’m recording for half an hour longer and I have not had it shut off on me yet and here in Canada daily it floats around 28° in the summer. And to be fair GoPros Suffer similarly from overheating. The only advice I can give is to record in 4K 30 when you don’t need 60 FPS it doesn’t generate as much heat. Also I have my high heat threshold turned on and I believe some European countries don’t have that option
@@AirPhotography Thanks alot for the advice! :) That's what I thought, as I'm just recording short clips and 4K 30 will suffice enough most of the time, I'm going with the DJI. After firmware update and with the protective case the temperature has really been quite well. We had ~40°C here in Germany in the past days and it has not overheated. To be fair, I haven't used it that much for now. By the way: I think the high heat threshold is deactivated in whole European Union. At least in Germany it's deactivated.
Thanks again and have a nice day! Let's hope Canada (or at least your region) does not face 50°C and more again this year. Stay safe :)
@@martincossette3025 Thanks alot for your help! As said below, we were facing around 40°C the past days here in Germany and the cam has not overheated, although I haven't really tested it that much. But as I'm also only shooting rather short clips, I think the DJI is a really good call - in my opinion the video quality is alot better compared to the GoPro 8. I will report back after my trip to the Maldives in December :) Thanks again, stay safe!
I was waiting for this camera cause I have the previos camera. But when I saw this dising I went to go pro. But not even gopro make happy just cause the fact that in order to use the front screen you have to do it in the menu. And you have the two screens at the same tame and that drain the battery even faster. So I preffer the first osmo action. Unluckily the first osmo action don't have the horizon leveling
go pro now a days is more for blogging that makes it heavier, i like light weight action cam.
So drone racing / mountain biking wise it sucks. Session5 was doing great there and got discontinued. I am on GO 2 now but could use better image quality without 100g + weight :/
Big point you missed is that it’s now a 70 pound cheaper (uk) than it originally sold for
Very good point
Here's a better point - the new version is still selling for less than the original version and has 128GB's of storage in the camera module.
@@markr041 ah man if only I had my Time Machine 😂
32g killed it for me. My projects are 12 hours long. argh!
So, get the newest version - 128GB's of storage. Good you waited...
Curious is most of the overheating issues come from just 4k?
I'm not super inclined to run 4k video. Id be just content with 2k, or even 1080 video. Does it still overheat at those levels as fast?
This question. Would love to get a comment from op
No overheat problems with 1080-2k. Even 4k 24fps is ok, if temperature is less then 25*
