    Phenomenal video! I wasn’t aware that there are 4 different fuse types, some of which seem quite similar in appearance. That explains the Amazon 1-star reviews I’ve read on fuse taps which messed up the contact spacing (or fell out easily) from a fuse box! Also really liked your explanation of how to find which side of a fuse in a fuse box is the 12v source side. Cheers!

    Thank you for this video. I was having an argument with someone recently about whether there is a right way and a wrong way to insert a fuse tap. He insisted that the electricity flows through the fuses in series regardless of which way it was inserted (which defeats the purpose of having two fuses). I was trying to make him understand that when the fuse tap is inserted the correct way each fuse acts as its own circuit, but when inserted upside down the electricity enters through the "exit" of the OEM fuse slot and the "entrance" of that fuse then feeds the other fuse. Thank you for proving that I was correct in my understanding of how a fuse tap works.

    Good video to explain the directional part. Initially I thought that since fuses are not directional, so the fuse tap would not be directional. But, after your video, I realized that the current would flow directly to the dashcam instead of the fuse if I install it the other way. Also the neutral simply goes to chassis in cars, interesting. So that's why the battery has a wire connected to the body. Thanks for making the video. Now I can try installing the dashcam.

    I was watching to remind myself how to do it, bc the fuse rating was confusing to me. You didn't explain this. Mixing rating within the tap. That's OK though, I am sure I'll find it.
    I did learn about flow rate, checking which side of the fuse is hot, and matching it to the flow direction of the tap. I didn't not know this, and it seems important.

      Agreed. Now that I fully understand how these work, I have to go back and double check some work that my "professional" mechanic did. He added a fuse tap to an empty slot that is not used from the factory. However, he put two fuses in the tap instead of just utilizing the accessory slot, so now the car's OEM slot is receiving power when it shouldn't be.

    Hello, great videos, to the point, no bs...Question: Is there such thing as a Fuse Tap (for low profile mini) that can handle 15A, or maybe 20A? All my local auto parts stores only carry Fuse Taps for low profile mini that carry 10A max. Any help or website than you know of, would be greatly appreciated

    • @SimpleDIYMedia
      @SimpleDIYMedia  Před 2 lety

      The reason you only find fuse tap that handle 10A is because the gauge of wire they use might be 12-14 gauge. This means the wire is what's limiting how much current it can handle. I have not seen any fuse tap that uses a heavier gauge wire. If you must tap a high current wire, you need to look into splicing and soldering onto an existing high current factory wire.

      Bottom fuse is the factory one. The top one just need to be higher rated than what the dashcam requires for current. Most dashcam draws less than 1 amp. So you can even put a 2A fuse at the top if you want.

    • @bobbybarnes1652
      @bobbybarnes1652 Před 2 lety

      The original fuse (that you pulled out to "borrow" power from) goes in the bottom of the fuse tap. Whatever you're powering with the tap (wire) determines what amperage fuse you use on the top. The vast majority of dashcams, including those with front and rear cams, are likely fine with nothing more than a 2A fuse. But check the manual for the camera to be sure! Don't run a larger fuse that you need.

    • @SimpleDIYMedia
      @SimpleDIYMedia  Před rokem

      The fuse amp rating you need is strictly dependent on the device you will be connecting and how much current it draws. If you are not sure, probably 5A or 10A will work for most car accessories. Also make sure the circuit you are tapping is able to support the current.

      Connect the ground wire to a grounding bolt under the dash. You can crimp a ring terminal on the wire to make install easier when placing it behind the bolt.
