    What an awesome hunt! Its actually really refreshing to see somebody on youtube shoot a spike buck! Too many food plot 10 pointers on TV have given todays hunters a warped perspective on what its all about. I love the big woods tracking. Keep it up! Cant wait for part 3.

      Thanks man!!! It’s a little tough on my ego haha….but a tracking hunt is a totally different ball game!! It’s really tested me over the years to see what this is really about for me. It can’t be about looking cool for ppl because I been getting my teeth kicked in for quite a few years 😂😂😂

    All bucks are trophy's! No matter how big, or small. It's the experience that you have is what matters. Nice job!

    Welcome to the club! I'm a New England hunter and spend as much time as I can tracking bucks in Northern Vermont, Northern NH, and Northern Maine. The 2 best pieces of advice I can give are don't give up and don't stop tracking. Nothing beats experience. If you fill your tag early in the season, keep tracking bucks. I've learned the most tracking deer after my season was over and had some really cool experiences even though I was unarmed and couldn't shoot. I track deer all winter (or as long as there is snow). If you only track deer during your deer season, and stop tracking deer once your tag is filled, you're missing some great opportunities to learn and improve. Stay with it man! Congrats on your first of many.

    Awesome Buck! And congratulations. The antlers are a secondary factor. It is the amount of work you put in to earn it. And the memories that are a bigger measure. Some of my best are also spikes-5 point range just because of the memories around them.

    Congratulations on that good looking monstah spike ! 🦌 I’ve seen this scenario many times . A big mature buck will allow a younger buck to help him work the hot doe . It’s quite impressive as he stays back a bit for safety and will loop on her to corral her but if you get in this situation again hang tight, great chance that bruiser is close by

    • @shanelizotte6318
      @shanelizotte6318 Před 6 měsíci +1

      I’ve seen that scenario as well. Here in Northern Maine the bucks will also travel through a lot of the same areas moving from doe pocket to doe pocket, regardless of size or age. If I can’t find a big track from the road I’ll take a small buck track because they’ll typically almost always cross a big buck track from travelling through the same places

      One tip w tracking is more times the shot happens super fast so target acquisition is huge,here in the North East most run a peep.I personally run a 2.5-10x40 on my 7600 carbine because i have a hard time seeing the bone. So u want your set up to be as soon as you pull up you see crystal clear thru whatever your sights are without adjusting your head all over to see the site,should fit like a glove.But all that aside ,hell of a job on your track! Congratulations. I been tracking a few years now and got my biggest buck to date last season tracking,7 pt 160lbs. Once you finally put all the pieces together tracking its so rewarding. Good luck on your next track!

    I'd love to know more about your tactics on this track: at what point on the track did you start the death creep? What was the indicator?
    How did you set-up on them for the second encounter? Guessed where they were heading and tried to cut them off?
    Did you find confirmation that it was the buck you were tracking?
    Also did you get your buck weighed?

      @swostillwateroutdoors  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Thanks!!! I started the death creep when I found the steamy hot buck poop! It was really fresh, so I knew he was close at that point! It’s a gamble because sometimes the deer is up moving and if you go into the death creep too soon you never catch him!
      I just went to the area they headed, I am still not sure what happened to the big buck because the track and poop were far bigger than the spike! Either way…I finally got it done hahaha

    • @swostillwateroutdoors
      @swostillwateroutdoors  Před 7 měsíci

      Deer numbers are definitely really low in northern Minnesota! You still find tracks, but it is very hard to find a big track. Age structure is just all out of whack. I think that the wolves are a part of that factor, they have put a big dent in the deer herd. Worst area I have seen for wolves is in the UP of Michigan!!

You need to take few steps look around then walk a little ways and once in a while grunt or bleat a doe call ( the can ) that way they will think it another deer and they might come back to you , that’s why walk , stop , look .

    • @buck19
      @buck19 Před 8 měsíci

      I've gotten wicked close on deer on the crunchiest of days. I just act like a deer and walk at their pace, which is faster than you'd think. My thinking is the only thing that tries to sneak around and be quiet is a predator.

    • @buck19
      @buck19 Před 8 měsíci +1

      With that said, if you are cruising thru the woods and constantly looking down at every track, your missing deer more than you know. Soon as you realize you're not paying attention, look around. I find the act of stopping gets the deer on edge.

    • @swostillwateroutdoors

      Yess! My mentor Todd Havel says on crunchy days you want to move as fast as you can and try to catch them off guard! also by the time they hear you coming you can close the distance a little faster! This is pretty nice videography, but I was startled by the overhead shot at 4:00… It’s illegal to use drones to pursue deer, and I think you’d have a tough time explaining to a CO that the camera is only for looking at you and not your surroundings. Maybe you actually staged that separately while not carrying a gun, which would be fine, but otherwise that’s probably a shot to avoid. The “invisible stick” cameras are pretty slick though.

    • @swostillwateroutdoors
