  • Today, I’m taking you onboard Malaysia’s National Airline,
on this short 2 hour domestic hop from Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Lumpur on their brand new Boeing 737 MAX 8.
We’ll see exactly how it’s like travelling with the new Malaysia Airlines, from the seats, to the brand new in-flight catering in economy class.
Would I recommend travelling with Malaysia Airlines after their big refresh?
Stay till the end to find out!

Not gonna lie here, the new cabin's hard and thin structure isn't really a big issue if MH deploys it for short flights, like KL-Langkawi, KL-Kuching, KL-Singapore, KL-Miri and maybe even slightly longer flights like KL-Jakarta, KL-KK and KL-Sandakan, etc.
However, it would be a potential issue if they were to deploy it for longer flights like KL-Perth, KL-Colombo, KL-Manila, KL-Cochin or just any flights that's 3 hours and above and, lets not forget, night flights where passengers would want to sleep.
In some occasions, some people may find the removal of in-flight screens a major deal-breaker, judging how this would not really make MH any different when comparing with its domestic competitors Airasia and Batik, and it would show a big difference when comparing it to international competitors like SQ that operates flights to the same destinations as MH.

The removal of the IFE has been a thing in a lot of airlines, especially American ones, for years now. The IFE is a complex system that requires maintenance and it is actually very expensive. Not to mention it gets obsolete quite quickly compared to consumer electronics--this is because the certification requirements will take years to complete (even as something as simple as a coffeemaker takes anywhere between 24 to 36 months and millions of dollars to get to certification.) This is why it is expensive and also why you tend to get crappy screens on IFEs.
Instead, because almost everyone possess some form of electronic device that can connect to wifi, flights would just offer access to the plane's intranet for free to access entertainment options. It's not as big of a deal breaker as you might think if you own a smartphone, tablet, or a laptop you trust.

Immigration for Sabah & Sarawak different from West Malaysian (Peninsular) where you need enter using social pass like entering country. This was because of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 before where the immigration autonomy is handle by Sabah & Sarawak. You can google more about it.

Well in kuching airport, there is 3 separate security lines. 1 for flights within sarawak and another one for flight within malaysia and the last one is for international flights

I'm flying Malaysia Airlines for the first time in just a couple days. Though I most probably won't be flying on this 737-8 specifically, it still gives me a general idea of the 737 and what to expect. Very informative and well edited!

Immigration requirements for sabah n sarawak are different frm peninsula and it has always been tht way..malaysian frm peninsula can enter sabah n sarawak by showing id card or passport but still need to gk through immigration. As for no ife in the new cabin american airlines and qatar airways are doing the same..not sure if this is oneworld thing to make their service consistent...

Well with MH buying the flying coffin the only alternative now is to fly AA which is exclusively Airbus. Boeing may have “fixed” the problem for now but how long before another incident with this plane? Also MH uses Airbus for long haul flights.

@@tiadaid Lol that has nothing to do with the aircraft quality. It was because of a combination of pilot and maintenance integrity. You should read more about it since you suggested it without a clue what you were even cross referencing.

No, not worth travelling on this newly installed blue grey seats. The seat are uncomfortable, flat hard as plank and heat insulating seats. Take note that these design can be found for route more than 2 hours (Seoul, bali, hanoi, Yangon, Bangkok, jakarta, manila etc- not only on domestic flights). What is the half Dashboard dangling between business class and economy class? To balance the plane? Those cheap looking design and bad quality look cheap on a National carrier. Not to mentioned, the removal of in- flight entertainment (IFE)screen and asking customer to connect to the lousy wireless IFE to enjoy the entertainment on your own devices. The wireless IFE always does not Work even the flight attendance resetting them! Also, How many phone/ iPad is required for a family with kids of 3-4 travelling on board to enjoy the im flight entertainment (if its connect and Work). Also, no headset provided with all this changes. Other inconsiderate passanger happily blasting their audio publicly while watching their downloaded entertainment. The whole journey is so noisy and no peace of mind and the flight attendance just allow them to do so. Furthermore, the flight safety demonstration is done manually. Malaysia airlines is going backwards instead of moving forward improving.
Malaysia airlines claims that with the slimmer seats, removal of IFE screen, half dashboard between business class and economy, wooden cutlieries etc= lighter plane= less fuel consumption= more sustsinability/ eco friendly. But the ticket Fare does not reflect this. Its so called sustainability or eco friendly is just a scam. Just consider other flight provider if can. I feel embarassed with all this changes and they called themselves a National carrier of Malaysia? Just a joke and a piece of an embarassment as Malaysian.
