My First Gibson: Lee Ving of Fear

- Formed in Los Angeles, CA in 1977, punk legends Fear were responsible for shaping the sound of California hardcore punk. In his early years, Fear frontman Lee Ving began learning country influenced guitar in Philadelphia with his teacher Anne Brown. It was during this class he heard the song "Guitar Boogie" played on a Gibson Les Paul and shortly after was making arrangements with his parents to purchase his very first Gibson.

It's crazy how technically educated Lee is at guitar. Blues, rock, country. The fact that he got turned onto such a simple genre like punk pretty late in his career is a testament of how addicting punk music can be.
I saw FEAR perform at the Whiskey Au Go Go back in the mid 90s. He was mocking the audience in between songs while giving a lesson on basic music theory. He was saying "see here, this is a half step. Do you know what half step is?" and then he laughed and said "now get ready, here comes a whole step. which chord is this?" Lee understood that the audience was really clueless about music.
Hell yeah
Everybody needs to believe in something
Lee Ving is a legend and a hero of mine from my teenage years Glad to see he’s still going strong today! Long live Lee
Lee Ving is a fucking legend man, loved his banter on stage.
No way, Lee Ving?? Fear rules.
yea guess what hes my grandpa
@@aubreyjames3951 Your grandpa is a fucking legend
@@aubreyjames3951 Yeah fucking right
I regret missing Fear back in the 80's when I was a teenager. I envy anyone who's ever seen them...
I met Lee Ving while walking out of a festival show Fear had just got done playing. I walked up to
him told him I was a big fan and he shook my hand. I then said I was really a big fan when
Fear played..... My mind went blank, I had a million things going through my head, Fear in
the Decline of western civilzation, Fear playing on Saturday night live indroduced by the Ed Koch,
him playing his part in the movie Clue. He looked at me patiently what seemed like forever and I
finally blurted out the Decline, He laughed and said cool, I then said you are a Punk Rock
Legend, and he said Thank you that is very kind. I got a few pictures with him as well. He was super polite and pleasant. Sometimes
its terrifying when you met someone you idolized as a kid, if they are a jerk it will ruin many
memories, thankfully Lee was a class act and I am still a huge fan of his work and his work with Fear.
This is exactly why i love Fear so goddamn much
hes my grandpa
@@aubreyjames3951 hahaha awesome! Fun fact me and my girl wandered around psycho 2019 looking for him cuz we heard he was there and it was waaaaaay more worthwhile than seeing the goddamn misfits, haha
@@raz0rthr0at thats cool im glad u could see him
@@aubreyjames3951 we didn't, but it was still better than the misfits!
@@raz0rthr0at oh im sorry u didnt get to meet him :(
Lee ving stumbled on the stairs at a show he played on st marks back in the 90s when he fell i grabbed him and kept him and his les paul from crashing. The guitar weighted more than him in his leather jacket.
Thank you for saving the Les Paul!
^^^ you think you care a little about Lee.....classic Gibson
Dude! How awesome is that?!?!! 👍⭐️👍
One thing that was great about the earlier punk bands is many had rock and roll roots, and you could hear it come out in their music. Fear is a great example of that.
Never knew lee had formal training in roots music, but that figures, that country, bluesy elements of thier music just sound too spot on. Definitely the most musically talented of the old l.a punk bands
X has that influence too, the guitarist Billy Zoom even worked with Gene Vincent
FEAR's alright... if you like guitars
ummm
This interview is so wholesome
So stoked to have seen Lee this last weekend opening for The Misfits. We had no idea he was going to be there and when we rolled in my buddy looked at me and said “oh sh…. Fear” and took off running a dead heat to the pit. The look on his face was priceless.
FEAR! So true..each time I have seen FEAR back in the 80s Lee Ving played a Gibson.
"Gods gift to rock n roll" well said.

Good story lee...les paul customs w 3 pickups rule..i got a 78 model..sounds massive..the guys in our band dig it..every mon.at rehearsal they always say"man that guitar is killer"...
Saw Fear at a Punk Rock fest in downtown St. Pete Florida back in 09,I got to have a small conversation with Lee about John Belushi and he told me how down to Earth even on the powder.
Take notes from this man kids because Lee Ving is the definition of true Punk Rock!

@@ItsMrMcFly omg haha i love that song he always sings it when hes at my house hes my grandpa
He did metal before his career took off with Fear, an LA punk band. He did a side project called MD.45 with Mustaine in the 90s, but later on, Dave erased his vocal tracks. He's done rock, metal, punk, country... Mostly known for punk.
Fear is a punk band, but they had SERIOUS chops.
As a matter of fact, when Fear was getting off the ground in the late 70s/early 80s many punks at the time did accuse them of being "heavy metal."
I love Lee Ving. He gave up so much to be part of the Punk scene. It was the only true sound for A true man
