  • How To Change a Hayward Super Pump Motor Bearing and Seal
If your hayward super pool pump is making a loud noise, that means that the pump seal has failed and is leaking water back on the front motor bearing. Its best to replace a leaking pump seal as soon as you can, because it will cost more to replace the pool pump bearing.

Great reference video. Every few years (think it’s been about 4 now) my pump starts getting louder and the impeller doesn’t turn as freely. I always have to debate buying a new pump vs paying the local pump repair shop at least $100 to do this. I hate to discard the pump for such a simple and cheap part. Going to give this a try. Thanks….

Sometimes at opening a pump will seize because the seal dried out a bit. I have a short video on that. czcams.com/users/shortsVVdGBQRMHVQ

Pump/Motor bearing replacement is the same on all pool pumps. And. If I have to tell you to turn the pump power off, you shouldn't be even trying to fix the pump.

I used this video as reference yesterday to change both bearings in my Hayward Super pump. Two bearings cost me $20 from a local pump repair shop and I bought a China Made 3-1/2 gear puller to get the front bearing for another $20. I had a smaller gear puller in my tool box that handled the rear bearing. One caveat for all who attempt this repair at home, be very careful with the long bolt rods that tie the back of the pump housing to the front. I snapped one trying to undo it. It broke at the top of the threads. I ended up brakng the remains off int the threaded bore. I was able to put it back together, but no it's being held with only three rods rather than four. Fortunately for me, the rod the broke was on the bottom side, so I have two rods on top holding the motor housing in tension, which is good. No issues on start up and the pump is super quiet now. The motor is over twenty years old and if I can get a few more years out of it, I'll be happy. Had I had a little more patience, I would have waited 24 hours for penetrating oil to have worked its way into the rod bore and I would have also applied some heat to it to see I could have removed it without breaking it. My gear puller also dulled the threads to the centrifugal switch screw bore. Fortunately, I had a cheap tap and die set to chase the threads and get that switch back in place. If you have some mechanical expertise and the right tools, this is a pretty straight forward repair for the average handyman.

I’m curious, how is this holding up? We used to replace bearings for customers with Hayward pumps 20 years ago and now I have my own pump that is getting loud. I think I remember them coming back a year or two later. It’s worth it in any event, with how high pumps have gotten.

If your talking about the 2 screws for the back cover, its because they don't come out all the way but most people will force them out. It can mess up the threads.
