The thumbtack can certainly come in handy and define songs that need it, otherwise, when a song doesn't need it, it's just (to me) a much better, fuller, warmer and more musical sound.

Yes, I agree Jonathan. There is no right or wrong, there is just a different tone and sharpness you get with the thumb when using a thumb pick versus the flesh of your thumb. The thumb pick is essential for Travis Picking IMO, but outside of that I prefer the flesh of my thumb for everything else I fingerpick :)

I think using your thumb you can tune the sound of the bass by controlling how long your thumb nail is. Picking with your thumb you can can control the portion of nail and flesh to give the sound that you want.

Hi V Ph. Yes, I love the sounds you can get with the thumbnail of your picking hand :)

Agreed. But with practice you can have even more precision with a thumb pick once if feels as fluent as your thumb nail

@@Riley_Rawlings_official true that the thumb pick gets easier with practice, however you can be just as precise with the flesh of your thumb. It's a different tone/sound you get thumb pick versus flesh of the thumb and what you prefer for any given situation is up to you :)

I want to buy a thumbpick for playing harp harmonics.
    1. Is the BumbleBee thumbpick suitable for?
    2. Shape: Jazz or Teardrop?
    3. Made in light, medium, heavy or X-heavy?

Hi Adu Yuen, Yes the Bumble Bee Thumb Pick is suitable for Harp Harmonics. Jazz or Tear drop is really whatever you like best. Same as the gauge of the pick. I personally like the Heavy picks because my harp harmonics sustain more compared to the lighter picks. I bought a selection of the Bumble Bee picks to see what I liked best. This is a good website for buying the picks: www.thepickshoppe.com/store/thumbpicks/fred-kelly/fred-kelly-bumblebee

I don't play finger style but I do play with my hands but I can't find any thumb picks that suit how I play. I use my thumb for upstrokes but it always scratches and bruises it so are their any picks that can work as a big thumbnail like a flamencos finger picks but for the thumb

@tosdy8480, I'm not sure if I am entirely sure what you mean.
I use Fred Kelly thumbpicks which are great. You might want to check those out.
I use my thumb for up strokes too, without a thumbtack. I'm not sure how you bruise it by doing this. Can you explain further?

I am a beginner and I am not sure what to use. I want to practice with my thumb only so can you tell me how to get a better sound with my thumb(without a pick). can you help me?

@user-di5vv4bx3, IMO unless you are Travis Picking, as in the style as I outline in the video, use your bare thumb.
You can always add the thumb pick later if you want, no biggie :)

Would you use a thumb pick for a sorta harder country song like Jolene by Dolly Parton? I lean towards yes, now when I am learning the Partisan by Leonard Cohen I should not use it, would you agree?
My problem is I cant grow out my thumb-nail (so flamenco is out) and I miss the sound of that.

It's really a personal choice Argo. For me, I only use the thumb pick with traditional Travis Picking stuff. So for the songs you mentioned above I would not use the thumb pick, but that is not to say if you did it's wrong. Listening to those songs I'd say the guitar player is not using a thumb pick
