Raymond Chandler's famous detective Philip Marlowe was brought to life for radio on June 17, 1947.
The average wage was around $,2800.00 a year and gas would set you back 15 cents a gallon. Times were good and radio was the source for news and home entertainment. Marlowe was considered to be more "hard-boiled" than the other radio detectives at the time and was soon a favorite for audiences. Van Heflin and Gerald Mohr each played Marlowe with Mohr taking over once the show moved from NBC to CBS.

Thx for playing these in order... much appreciated!
Thank you đ
The dialog is great no filthy language
đ
I wonder if any of these actors suspected people would still be listening to their performances nearly three quarters of a century after the broadcast.
Crime is a suckers road and those who travel it wind up in the gutter the prison or the grave they never learn
Lolâ€ïžâ€ïžđ
Marlowe telling like it is!đ
there's no other end
I like the addition of the railroad footage. The old cars you 2 know how to add scenes of actual life to the art while we listen. Thatâs a gift. Iâve fallen in like with the writer Raymond Chandler & the actual investigator that inspired Phillip Marlowe. Iâm sorry that this comment is a bit long winded. I just know when it says from Hearth & Home OTR itâs going to be a great wholesome time. Everyone should be buying you two a coffee or contributing what they can. Your attention to detail is tedious & thoughtful. Basically we donât deserve you , Thank You !
Thank you for the kind and encouraging words! I'm always working on creating new videos for the shows. I'm so glad that you enjoy the channel! đđ
Itâs true you & your mate do produce such great & quality work. I had to let you both know itâs seen and appreciated. We are not worthy you sacrifice lots of time ,energy & eye strain to help us take our minds & hearts off of the world for moments maybe hours or a few minutes here & there. Thank You it means a lot to us peace, love & health my friends.
I got it and enjoyed. Did you reference Home Movies? "Fallen in like"
I love Phillip Marlowe stories
Adult bedtime stories. Thank you.
That's wonderful!
The difference between tv & radio or reading? TV requires little or no imagination.
Radio.... theater of the mind...
One of my favorite series. Thanks so much!
Awesome! There's more to come, stay tuned!
ThankYou so much for this offering! The Old Radio plays were favorites of my late Mother and her Brother when they were in their teens. Now I enjoy the detective stories especially the Philip Marlow Detective radio plays voiced by Gerald Mohr!
Wow! I'm glad it brings back great memories! Thanks for tuning in!
I remember a song from the 50's by robin luke called "Suzy darling"
Very enjoyable! Not only do I love to listen to the old radio detective shows, but the vintage scenes you have playing are wonderful to see. The cars are so beautifully designed, unlike the modern crap they have now that all look the same. Thank you for all the work you put into this for us.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for tuning in!
In some ways the old ways may"ve been better. Or perhaps it's noir nostalgia & atmosphere.

My pleasure, thanks for tuning in!
Hi everyone, I love just about all old time radio. It also helps keep my mind off real life. I guess itâs good therapy
Sound quality is so good, it must be digitally mastered, filtered, improved somehow!
Thank you, I do work hard to clean up the audio. I'm still learning but I run each show through at least one filter to make the sound louder and clearer!
đ I tryđ
The first show quieter parts were harder to hear, even with earbuds in & some background noise...
Also, had some Bufferin buffering moments.
@@terrencemccoy8219 funnily, yar statement on buffering also had a buffering moment : D

Mr H. Howdy. Have you heard of a show named
Life With the Lyons?
It's much like Father Knows Best. Or
The Nelson. Ozzie and Harriett? It's British I think. I just read my first one. Old time cute. đ»
Elgin. IL. m

A guy in our outfit in the Army overseas in Germany took a 45 bullet in his chest just above the heart, I never saw so much blood in my life, it was an inch deep, cuz his heart keept on beating, till there wasn't any blood left in his body.
So sad we don't speak like this anymore đ„ș. âââââ
So true
Speak for yourself. Lol đ
No one ever did. Thatâs why Chandler is special.

In grades 9-12,
I had a shop teacher (Mr. Fleming) and five varsity coaches (Coach Businius, the Scramaglia bros. Coach Chongonian and Coach Vuttone) in the 1970's that spoke just like that.
I use it myself and call it the "Benevolent Gym Teacher" pep talk when I find myself having to admonish my younger clients.

Gerald Mohr is the ONLY voice for Philip Marlowe I will accept. Itâs too bad audiobooks werenât around back then due to technological limitations. I would give anything to have listened to him read the novels.

What city is that film from ?
They are from old public domain clips I found online and lightly restored. I think it is Chicago and New York.
Thanks
I enjoy the OTR but they're just as full of sex, drugs and violence as what's on today. It's just that it was radio and censored. đ€Ł
