When the band was restricted from releasing new material by their record label in '91, they did release an album of songs previously unreleased and that helped immensely with the suffering and angst of not getting new music. Here in America, that album was called "Turns to Stone" and it deserves a mention. Here in the states, their 1st album release included the epic 9 min song "Fool's Gold" and it deserved a mention in that video as well

Brown and Squire have Utd as their team but they’re not big football fans like Mani and Reni, the latter is a huge blue.
In fact Ian Brown has said he likes City too and always wanted them to do well as his mum is a City fan.

I remember before the prospect of a second album from the Stone Roses, the rumour was that they intended to be like the Sex Pistols and only release one studio album as a singular outstanding piece of art.
The guy whose office they trashed wasn’t from Silvertone which was the independent label that they were signed to for eight albums. It was the guy who signed them for one single, which was Sally Cinnamon, which was the single prior to Elephant Stone, their first single with Silvertone.
The anticipation for hearing even a snippet from the second album is indescribable and would be beyond comprehension for people who have only ever really known music in the digital age.
It was announced that Love Spreads (the first single from a the Second Coming) would be debuted on a specific radio station at a specific time on the evening of a specific day and we were all sitting waiting by the radio for it coming on. I was at work in the cafe of a short crossing ferry and lucky for me, the radio debut happened halfway across, so no-one wanted any tea by then.
The Second coming was released at the end of ‘94 and I think just about everyone I knew bought a copy but it generally wasn’t loved in the same way that the first album was but it wasn’t hated either. I suppose the anticipation was the issue really as it had been teased for so long that a second album was coming, that there was no way that it could ever live up to the anticipation of an entire generation.

It was the Offices of FM Revolver, the first label that put one single out that they did the paint job on, not Silvertone the 8 album deal label. When the first album came out, we listened to it constantly. I still listen to it, The Second Coming was a good album, just not a patch on the first - but how do you follow something like that up? Coupled with the amount of time between releases just took the fire away. Their first album is in a-lot of people top 10s, it's in mine. Mani went onto join Primal Scream, John Squires founded the Seahorses and also released a number of solo albums as well as being a successful artist. Reni 'mysteriously' left the Stone Roses pretty much disappearing from the music scene, despite being considered by many to be the best drummer of his generation - he had a short-lived band called The Rub that didnt release any material and rejoined the Stone Roses for their 2011 reunion and shows in 2017. Ian Brown has had a number of solo albums and collaborations as well as a media career.

I’m from Manchester. There’s probably no single reason why so much culture came from here, people say there’s something in the water but it’s probably a number of reasons.
The weather is usually a bit cold, overcast and a seemingly constant light rain, we get the odd sunny day in July but you’ve got to be resilient if you prefer warmer sunnier climates.
Post industrial Britain had many northern towns that struggled with mass unemployment and a hard-hit working class.
Football and music is where lots of young men found an escape. It’s why the North West is such a hub for football and lots of great musicians came out of northern England. Bands likely started to inspire each other too.
I’m biased but people from Manchester are generally the coolest in the country, in terms of clothes and attitude (especially City fans 😉).
But if you’re going to point to a single thing that lit the spark of the Manchester music scene, it’s the Sex Pistols, obviously the London punk band, gig at the Free Trade Hall in the late 70s.
Despite the attendance being only 20 odd people, I think 4/5 famous bands and musicians were formed from the gig.
Half the audience went on to have chart success and become stars, taking inspiration from what they saw… basically the Sex Pistols blew everyone’s head off that night.

LEGENDS. To their marketing, they were unheard and not even a real band and they rented a garage which was on a main road. Everything they did was built around John Squire, who was weirdly one of the best guitarists of all time

Man I love the Stone Roses, John Squire guitar work is awesome, so much Hendrix influence. So when you look at some of the bands that came out of Manchester long before them you can see how music is a major player in Englands northern towns( Liverpool produced, IMO the best ever). So, bands like The Hollies, who's Graham Nash became a legend in the USA . Then we have probably the Kings of 70s disco sound, The Bee Gees, although they left Manchester for Australia when still young, they formed there first band, the Rattlesnakes in Manchester. 10cc from Stockport, a stones throw from Manchester also had great success stateside. A little further south, in the Midlands the birth of heavy metal, Black Sabbath & Led Zeppelin to name just 2 of the greatest. Thank you for this piece you have put together & if you want to see how "the Stonies" were admired, there's a movie called Spike Island in which 4 lads who dream of starting a band from there love of the stone roses music is quite an interesting insight of the influence they had.

There's also the album Garage Flower which was recorded in the mid 80s but not released until the mid 90s because they weren't happy with how it sounded at the time. There's early versions of a couple of songs from the first album on it. It's worth a listen

You think that even in the 1980s one album per year was too much? A few magic words for you - Prince, Frank Zappa, Anthony Braxton, Sun Ra, Horace Tapscott, Cecil Taylor...and, erm, The Fall, Zoogz Rift, Sleep Chamber, Psychic TV, Nurse With Wound...is that enough evidence to the contrary?

Well, if you use your brain, the Smiths presented as the type of band that were art students.
As much as everyone liked their music and Johnny Marr is a proper geezer, working class northerners weren’t like Morrissey and co.
They were like the Stone Roses.

Stone Roses were brilliant band for the time, even magnificent, but their diehards are many and they aren't too different to soccer ultras. You say a bad word anything conaidering the band or the quality of a record or a performance be ready to meet your end.
Of course one could say this goes with any band's fans, but there's something peculiar about the Roses -people. And I LOVE roses, especially the period surrounding the debut. Singles, b-sides, outtakes, almost everything.

A lot of detail missing from this video but most of it is right
..the paint wasn't thrown over the record boss who had them for 8 albums, it was the label who put out one singlethat got the paint because when the band became big they just kept re-releasing the single with a terrible music video the band had nothing to do with.
During the time when they were banned from recording they all grew apart, had kids, moved to different areas from each other and when they did finally get together to do an album everything changed, the gang mentality was gone and I heard the wifes and girlfriends all despised each other.
The other (kinda half confirmed by most of the band) rumour is they were all indulging in different drugs (Ian was smoking Snoop Dogg levels of weed, John was on Coke, Mani was drinking and doing Ecstasy and Reni was doing smack).
Squire assumed control to try and get the 2nd album done and cut Ian Brown out of the writing process, they were all on different wavelengths and the 2nd album suffered for it... despite this I still think about 6 tracks on the album are top tier, some of their best work and if they could have somehow sailed the storm I still believe they could have done some amazing music together.
Their debut album, is for me anyway, the greatest debut album of all time, and their impact on British culture was enormous, you could say it went beyond their music, their style, their fashion, the hats! can still be witnessed 35 years later.

This was the time for the start of my music journey and it started with the Stone Roses album which was life changing about the way I felt about music. I am still really waiting for the second Album because I waited until my music taste was wider and Nirvana and other bands would take me away from caring about the 2nd album by the Roses which was not to my liking probably because of the effect of the first album. Once Oasis released their first album I was done with the Manchester scene and Oasis were not to my liking. so that Roses album and other Manchester bands of that time with the indie scene and Dance scene merged and the roses and of course the happy Mondays were at the forefront of that scene but then that was it for me after finding Joe Division and New Order from the earlier Manchester scene meant Oasis just seemed boring.

The Stone Roses are the best band ever...Ian Brown (Godlike Genius) has some fantastic songs as a solo artist...I'd suggest giving "F.E.A.R" (masterpiece)...."My Star"..."Stellify"..."Just Like You" and "Keep What Ya Got" a listen...Mani went on to join another great band called Primal Scream with Bobby Gillespie...John Squires formed a group called "The Seahorses" and had a few good song...best being "Love Is The Law"...he is dropping a album on the 29th Feb with Liam Gallagher called Liam Gallagher & John Squires that I'm looking foward too

Wrong contract. The 8 album contract was with Silvertone but they threw paint all over the offices of FM Revolver who they had just a one-off release deal with. They did that record, they released it on FM Revolver and how much of a 'right' he then had to re-release it to cash in on their later success when they were now on Silvertone is debatable without seeing the actual contract. According to the Roses, he had no right ... but they would say that, lol. I'm more torn about it because I actually quite like Sally Cinnamon

I have to say your hate for Oasis, from someone not from the UK and not understanding the context they came from US very odd. Every band in stone way draws upon those who they grew up listening to, even The Beatles, especially in their early years were, as you put it, derivative.
When Oasis appeared on the scene it was very different to what had been before. I'm not going to justify how they acted, they grew up in poverty with an abusive dad, so I think you judge them too harshly.
At the time I thought the way they acted up was disrespectful to fans, especially in the US when on tour they cancelled dates, but I think to understand them you should watch the documentary about them, because I don't think without knowing their background you are giving them a fair go.
I think there's a documentary called Supersonic available here on CZcams, also I've called Definitely Maybe on their own CZcams channel. You should definitely watch them, and maybe some other videos on their lives, because I don't think without knowing their background you can really make a judgement on them. I loved their music but didn't like them. Now I know their life stories I can understand why they were how they were.
