  • Shooto is considered a hybrid martial art derived from Shoot Wrestling. It is focused on all aspects of fighting: striking, stand-up grappling and ground fighting. Practitioners are referred to as shooters or shootists. Shooto rules have evolved with time, are different depending on the class, Class C and D are amateur and have more restricted rules more similar to their first events, while professional classes are now true mixed martial arts competitions. Shooto weight classes are different from those of the United States Association of Boxing Commissions, which are used by most MMA promotions.
Shooto was brought to America in the late 1980s by top student of Satoru Sayama, Yorinaga Nakamura. He began teaching Shooto at the Inosanto Academy in 1991, and is the instructor of Erik Paulson, Ron Balicki, Dan Inosanto, Larry Hartsell, and many others.

I personally feel because Erik Paulson was fighting, it was in the lesser known Shooto (which in my opinion was pro mma back when Brazilian Vale Tudo and early UFC was brawling in cages), the Gracies refused to let him compete in the UFC and at the time, he didn't have the right connections to talk to Pancrase and fight there, would be the main reason he doesn't have as many followers as he shoud.
This forced Erik to be held down in lesser known promotions, some of which had really kooky rules. In the WCC, the Gracies denied Erik Paulson to compete unless he was willing to fight in the "strikers" division, as Renzo was competing at that event in the submissions area. Erik had to fight without submissions in the heavyweight division, where he was undersized. He also had to have a ponytail, as he had a job as a stuntman and it was required for the job. He beat the first guy and in the second fight, the opponent grabbed the wall to prevent takedowns, which was allowed and was the only thing that prevented Erik from ground and pounding him. Tragically, those two fights are on CZcams, along with his loss in Japan Vale Tudo to legendary fighter Carlos Newton and more commonly showed than his various victories in Shooto.
Erik arguably fought some of the toughest competition in Shooto and if I recall correctly, was the first American to win a Shooto championship. Even his loss to Matt Hume (again, posted more frequently) was due to a very controversial head cut that didn't seem to hurt or faze Erik and Erik had been dominating Matt Hume until that point.
So in short, Erik is a humble and quiet guy that pretty much got blocked from nearly everything but Shooto and in Shooto (more well known in Japan than anywhere else), he did exceptionally well but the promotion wasn't the best at promoting it's sport, even though they had great athletes and professional fighters.

I have been learning martial arts continuously since 1978 and in my experience there is no one else in the world with more knowledge on this subject than Eric Paulson.
    Thank you for sharing

The lack of exposure this channel has is criminally underrated. Watching Erik's demonstrations on repeat has given me such a crazy base when I started BJJ.
