- The music alone would be so expensive it'd bankrupt whoever touches it. This anime has a 20 minute intro. It's literally an MTV music video in anime form. No seriously, when does the anime start? This intro has been going on for like 20 minutes. Wait, this IS the anime? This? This is it? This is as close to a perfect anime as you can possibly get. It's like MTV was injected straight into my veins. Quite possible the most 80's thing ever produced. Yes, even more 80's than California crisis & Akira.

The story of Cipher is set in mid-1980s America, mainly New York City. It concerns the lives of former child stars twins Siva (Jake Rang) and Cipher (Roy Rang), who mysteriously began to trade places until the two became synonymous with each other. Anise Murphy is a classmate of Siva's, and shortly after becoming acquainted with him ends up entangled in a bet to see if she can tell the two apart after living at their apartment for two weeks. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

HA!

Cypher or shiva is their stage name..one of the twins' real name is jake..so he probably said jake
The reason behind them kissing is actually talked about by the end of the manga where *[SPOILER]* even they admit they didn't know why they started doing it other than the fact that they were "forcing" their brotherly affection to cover up the fact they both had unresolved animosity and anger towards one another that they couldn't reveal. After being separated from each other for awhile and opening up about these dark feelings after they reunited, their relationship became a lot more "genuine" and they stopped kissing.
Now that's some fascinating stuff to follow up "they ain't gay"
So, the couple equivalent of an unresolved argument but you continue to play nice to try to remain amicable but the anger is still stewing...but with brothers.
I laugh, since I now know the creator thought Americans did this, but I am desperately curious to know where she got her research! Then again...even with the advent of the internet, my teenage self fifteen years ago just thought English was spoken all over the world and of course they spoke it in Japan! America is the richest country and countries all want to do business with us, thus they learn English to do so, that's why English is so popular!
And then I was slapped in the face when I found out that not only was English not spoken there (nor in most countries of the world), they don't even use the same alphabet! And they have three writing systems! My dreams of possibly living in Japan died that moment but it's good I got the wakeup call when I did. I would've been an absolute weaboo, with only my viewing of anime (at the time, starting with Americanized 4Kids shows and ending with fuedal-era Inuyasha) and a copy of "Memoirs of a Geisha" to go by; a very depressing sight indeed.
"I hate you, bro!"

@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley EDIT: SORRY, just read the rest of your comment, it was cut off on my phone. Actually, no the author didn't think that Americans did this. Only one character in the manga ever sees them kiss and it's made clear that she thinks it's odd. Even she's confused by it. The author herself actually travelled frequently to NY and knew a lot about American culture. A lot of the pictures and characters are based on actual celebrities during that time or things she saw during her travels there.
Old Comment: Yeah exactly. But this was literally years of unresolved issues between them developing since they were kids. Emotions they couldn't identify or really admit to themselves until a traumatic event separated them and they had to be honest with themselves about who they were as individuals and not as "twins". It taught them how to connect with people and each other in a more authentic way.

I recently finished the Cypher manga and it's actually really good. I'd highly recommend it. As for why it had so much footage of the twin towners, it's because the twins are constantly compared to them (as in one can't stand without the other). Which is also why I believe the manga has never and will never receive any kind of re release or modern anime adaptation. I can't believe 9/11 resulted in no modern reprints of such a great manga.

Minako Narita is a well known 80s mangaka who was well known for her romanticised version of USA. She always depict USA especially new York and Los Angeles where she depicted those cities as vibrant city full of hip youth doing hip 80s stuff. She loves adding stuff like how diverse and exotic the city is. Also I noticed that many of her main character in her Manga is awkward Japanese girl thrusted into wild western lifestyle and catch the eye of handsome androgynous main male character that's considered the prettiest at the university or school and attract both female and male. The story tend to linger around doing nothing before they sped up the story near the end.

And I will say this about the creator. She had her vision and she fought for it. She wanted things to be authentic as possible to depicted the United States right down making sure everyone spoke English. I'm not surprised if one of her original plans was to have it animated and designed to appear more like a Western comic or animated movie if she wanted to go that far.
Oh god, this is the anime that my grandma bought when I was still visiting her. She popped this into her semi-working laserdisc player for me and my bro to watch coz she thought we'd like it. People who champion subs over dubs: *hurts self in confusion*
How so? Subs are nicer because they sound stays the same as the original creators desired it to be, and won't get reinterpreted or changed. If the original creator wanted it to be English, thats fine too.
In this case, the sub IS the dub. Dubception... or something...

"What is Anime?"
Anime is...straight from Japan, totally unexpected, not kids' stuff!
They have "kids stuff" too but they also have something for every one. You love cooking? There are manga and anime series about that. You love ballet? There is at least one anime for that. You love adult stories but you also love cutesy stuff? There are anime series for that. Sometimes you can even get both adult and cutesy stuff in the same darn series if you look hard enough / know the title. And this is part of why I fell in love with anime , they some times have different ideas about what counts as a series for kids , they have options geared more towards adults , and a series or movie for every thing or just about any thing you can think of ...making anime so varied in story and even art style that there is something for every one. I will never understand people who hate on anime. Although they didn’t tell their father, he knew about it somehow. Consequently, one night, the parents got into a fight, the father went hiking for some reasons with the little brother-Cipher and he died because of bad weather (Cipher was still alive). The brothers thought it was their mother’s fault that their father died so they moved out and lived together. Unfortunately, Cipher also thought it was his responsibility for the death of his dad and he usually had nightmares about that night so he started using drugs to forget about it. The big brother-Siva, tried to help his brother to overcome it by forcing him to go to school as Siva and Cipher actually liked doing it (because acting was the only thing he loved and was good at). Finally, Cipher got rid of his addiction but they still went to school as Siva.

Whoa the thumbnail for this video has changed for me like 3 times!!
That's just how potent this anime is
Thank you so much for including those Tonegawa clips. I've seen Jay Kabira credited with that role for a while now, but I've never sat down to watch Tonegawa and the clips I found didn't convince me. But this...this is without a doubt that man.
I've been on quite a binge through your anime reviews lately. Would love to see more!!! :D
Danger zone?
As in, the song by Kenny Loggins?
*FOOTLOOSE*
1:01 Look how tiny his head is!!
Happy to run into this video, Cipher is my favorite anime.
I had no idea there was a manga of it as well though.
2:32 i had to pause for 2 min i cant stop laughing
After some time of waiting, the video is finally here. Thank you, Kenny!
Let's watch it for the boy
THIS WAS THE NARRATOR FROM TONEGAWA?! I did not expect that.
This is amazing, i'm yet to watch it if ever - but recently finished the manga and had to say it become one of my favorites, so seeing this video was a treat I'm not sure how i got, thank you!
great vid. also like the xabungle music. Dancing Xabungle is such a great album!
Here's an algorithm boosting comment for ya, Kenny
I love the art style though!! We need more of this, animes that are willing to be silly w out being too self aware. Reminds me of Heartcocltail was an actual anime.

You have actually convinced me to add this to my OVA challenge list even though I had disqualified it, I'm doing a personal challenge where I'm watching every OVA from 198X - 2001 that has english subs.
I’ve been curious about this one ever since you posted those clips. Shame there’s no broader story, but I do love me some Phil Collins. I might check it out.
Thank you youtube for recommending. My life is changed by this newfound vintage anime series
“no sound, and no visuals?” so.. a light novel
4:02 “ON SALL” yas
There are 3 other 80's anime you might want to check out (if you haven't already) which have a very similar music video vibe to them:
To-Y, based on a manga about a rock band, featuring loads of big J-Pop hits of the time. It also looks quite gorgeous
Machikado no Märchen, one of the earliest OVAs, with a very loose romance plot framing a bunch of very 80's music segments
Chocolate Panic Picture Show, which is actually a straight up music video based on an experimental gag manga with a serious case of blackface
There's also Noel's Fantastic Trip, which is a vanity project of children's songwriter Iruka which frequently halts it's story for barely related music video interlude, but it's a production for very young kids, so I don't know if it would be your cup of tea.
Anyways, keep up the good work!
That's a lot to work with. I'll see if I can get to some of that eventually.
Jeeesus this is like that pop team epic American movie skit but with funnier engrish and 40 minust long instead of 10.
IVE SEEN CLIPS FROM THIS VIDEO AND ITS CRACKED ME UP FOR AGES!!! AND IM SO HAPPY THAT I KNOW WHAT ITS CALLED NOW
2:01 Kenny now you GOTTA show us those AMVs you made
Thank you for the terrable videos. ^_^
I refuse to believe that any anime is more 80's than California Crisis.
2:19 Awesome Red Letter Media namedrop! Well done!
