    As an avid cyclist in Maine, I think I'm FINALLY starting to learn. Just take January and February off!! Your lost conditioning will be more than made up for by renewed enthusiasm come spring. Also, it keeps you more motivated to ride through the holiday months knowing there's a break on the horizon. Just don't put on weight.

    The upside (from my perspective) is living in a place with amazing natural beauty that has bike trails.

    There's always some place with better weather and some place worse. I'm glad I don't live in the far north but I live in Saskatchewan and stopped riding about a month ago. I spent a couple of weeks in the Halifax area this September and I'm very envious of what you have for riding, both trails and weather. Stay well, and dry.

    Have you thought about flipping that stem so it has a positive rise? It might look really goofy, but it might make pulling up the bike for jumps a little easier. It would be cool to see you try it in a video.

      @Leonid12k Před rokem +3

      No positive stems on this channel, back breakers and wrist destroyers only

      Hell, back in the '90s we ran 130mm+ stems on our XC hardtails. The idea was getting weight over the front wheel so the bike didn't loop out on really steep climbs. Where I ride, 80-90% of our time is spent climbing long steep mountains. I've always enjoyed climbing as much as descending. Its inevitable and necessary. Might as well get used to the pain. Its all time spent in the bike!
      The older I get, the shorter and taller my stems get. I don't give a shit what it looks like if I can ride all freakin day! FUNCTION >form!

    Definitely worth upgrading most entry level frames. I have a 2021 Rockhopper (base) frame that I put a Reba RL 120 tapered fork (using EC44 lower headset), a Shimano XT drivetrain, and cheap carbon wheels on and it’s a killer ride. Light, agile, and down-country enough to shred some descents.
    Glad to hear the Poseidon is working out great as a DC bike. Can’t wait to see them hit the market.

    Is the Norton a hardtail mtb or a dirt jumper? What really is the difference, outside of dirt jumpers usually being single speed?

  • @johnnydoe66
    @johnnydoe66 Před rokem +2

    Yeah, as I get older, the less I like the cold. I am turning 56 next month and it's getting easier to just look at the thermometer or the frost on the neighbor's roof and just say "Nope!"
    In my defense, I did order a pair of windproof/fleeced cycling pants off Amazon to keep me from doing that as easily though. Especially after redoing my rim tape, valves, and installing new Continental tires on my plus hardtail.

      Haha, 61 years young livin in sunny Wackofornia. I ride any time, all winter, but I rarely feel your pain! 26 degrees is about the coldest ride I've done. I enjoy skiing most in the nastiest, coldest, and stormiest conditions. Actually the warmer, wetter rides are lots more uncomfortable for me. They can even cause hypothermia easily when you're soaking wet constantly.
      I'm moving to Colorado soon though. Ive done rainy, hailing or snowy hiking/biking/fishing/camping trips there in July that were far colder and more miserable than my winter rides at home. My riding buddy in Minnesota is hardcore. They only do snow rides when the temps are below 25 degrees, otherwise the snow is too soft to ride in.

    Studded tires, hoss. Maybe Panaracer will make some, but until then Nokian and Schwalbe make decent MTB studded tires. Go fat tire and try the 45 north studs, they are a hoot.

    Ever thought about making some homemade rope spoke laced wheels? Think it'd be right up your alley; i really enjoyed the Ali Clarkson video on it and would love to see your way of going about it.

    • @rollinrat4850

      There's a company I know who makes a Kevlar string trail repair spoke. I wanna say it called Fiberfix?? I have one in my long distance kit. Never used it. I build my own wheels too well!
      It might be an interesting experiment but a real PITA on a practical level. Why reinvent the freakin wheel?? YET AGAIN???
      If you figured out how to make the two metal ends , 32X!, that attach to the hub and rim, you could conceivably build a wheel out of Kevlar fishing line!
      It would be a 'perfect wheel' for an eccentric clown bike wheel!

    Could you just buy it all at once? Sure, but you'll need all the money pooled together or get it all on credit. Either way you'll have to tie up some money for a long spell and commit to it.
    Getting a responsible priced bike and taking your time upgrading it makes your money more flexible. e.g. if something pops up that you weren't planning on, then you can just hold off on that next upgrade until you get things sorted out.
    I've done it both ways, "all at once and a lot of it on credit" being the later, and my money is going to be tied up for another year now, which makes life's road bumps a lot more stressful.

    • @rollinrat4850
      @rollinrat4850 Před rokem

      It makes most 'common sense' to simply ride and wear out what you've already got. Take care of it and ride it until it's non functional. While doing that, decide on your upgrades and save up for them over time, then wisely and carefully spend your hard earned money. IGNORE the marketing BS that's everywhere in the bike industry. Think for oneself!
      Of course, if stuff is not up to the task, it breaks. Then that's a good excuse to upgrade to more durable stuff.
      When you think hard about it, it's the RIDER (their fitness and skills) that makes the biggest difference. Its not the freakin bike. That's just a simple machine. An inanimate object that does nothing without the rider aboard.
      I work in the bike industry. What drives me nuts is all the marketing BS LIES. The materialism and the waste that is generated. The bad joke known as 'quality control' in the larger bike industry. Its bad enough to make me ashamed for my chosen sport. Its amazing how much good usable stuff goes into our dumpster on account of 'upgrades'! I use up as much as I can or save it and give it away.
      I can acquire and afford the highest end bikes and hardware I want and get most of it near cost. But I want, lust, or lose sleep over none of it.
      There's only one brand bike in my shop I'd ever even consider buying. Ive still managed to restrain myself. Still riding my decadeS old bikes because they haven't worn out yet!

    Really interested in what the final geo and price point will be. Esp given being sold as a frameset, how its going to stack up to say, a Canyon Stoic, which is probably the major competitor at what I'm guessing is going to be the price point, but will have full build dealer savings. Or something like a Ragley Mmmbop, although shipping from Chain Reaction will probably push the price of those up out of being competitive in North America.
