    The fact that a BlackBerry dug out from the underworld has a better camera setup than most current tablets scares me!

    The front facing stereo speakers were brilliant. I don't think anyone else did that at the time and few do today. Forward firing speakers sound so much better than back or bottom firing (Switch Lite, PSP1K). I've got the fancy official leather envelope case on mine and it's not disintegrating yet. Everything BlackBerry made felt premium.

    I got one for Christmas once and loved it. Blackberry has a great idea with the UX here, ahead of it’s time with gestures but no app support or it would be huge!

  •  Před rokem +19

    I remember seeing this for the first time in a store as a teen. The gesture control was mind-blowing to me. Also loved the form factor, and the stereo speakers.
    It had amazing features such as extended display mode for the HDMI and true multitasking. (eg: starting a video recording and changing to an other app didn't stop the recording)

    The PlayBook was a classic example of something great that should have appeared on the market while BB was dominant. Considering it came out in 2011, the fact it has an HD screen, rear and forward facing cameras 1080p, a dual core processor, hdmi (1080p output), dock, predictive keyboard, dual speakers a great connectivity platform with your BB and other AV equipment is impressive. Added wins also include drag and drop files in a wide range of accepted formats and all in 2011, it’s hats off, but the rot for BlackBerry was already irreversible.

    I loved my Playbook. Got it clearance priced. Set it up to run Android apps. Even developed a few apps for it myself, and sold them on the store. Used it for years after it had effectively ended any practical use case scenarios as a portable Sega Genesis (thanks to an emulator and Bluetooth controller) and e-reader (thanks to the Aldiko app). It was my best little travel companion, and got used to pass much time on flights when I traveled semi-regularly for work.
    EDIT: I just remembered, I also used it with VNC to connect to my computer at home. Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo, and a TV with an HDMI port, and bam, I was in business.

    i'm a crackberry (i'm still using a KeyOne and a Q10 today) and i remember there was a very short period of time when, for some reason, only the wealthiest (and hippest) people i know owned a playbook
    it was 2011, so it was the tail-end of blackberry's prestige years, and owning a 9700 (which i've had) or a 9900 still meant more than having an iphone
    i think a big part of this mystique was the fact that the playbook is less of a stand-alone tablet, and more like a big extra screen for your blackberry; you NEEDED to pair it with your blackberry to be able to access your email and calendar. which means people who bought this either didn't know what they were getting, or they were blackberry loyalists who already have disposable cash.
    another thing that this did which was revolutionary at the time was that this runs on a primitive version of the BB10 os (this was the first ever blackberry device running QNX), and it was one of the few tablet devices (or any mobile devices for that matter) that runs a FULL desktop internet.
    that was a huge deal at the time.

      @aussiefurbymogwaifan6621 Před rokem

    One of the worst issues (for me, at least) was that you could not let the battery go completely dead because it needed a bit charge to recharge. I let the battery completely die before knowing about this and had to send in to Blackberry to get "fixed". I have no idea why a table (or any electronic device) could be sold with a major flaw like this.

  • @dtimekeeper

    I had one for a bit before I resold it - the interface was pretty fluid for its time, it was compact and the web browser was one of the few that still supported Macromedia Flash at that time. The PIN field in the Contacts is for the BlackBerry Messenger PIN (user ID) numbers.

    Blackberry was ahead of its time with its software and functionality. Blackberry 10 brought in gesture-based OS. Apple and Android were still utilizing buttons to do everything. Now they utilize gestures in their operating systems and everybody acts like they started it. I remember people back in the day when using blackberry 10 complained of having to use gestures in order to navigate the operating system. And now it is commonplace and people couldn't fathom going back to buttons. Also, the pinned in the contacts was for your blackberry pin. Which was used for blackberry Messenger.

  • @ooo4me
    @ooo4me Před 7 měsíci +1

    LOL the PIN number field was nothing to do with credit cards... each device had its own individual personal identification number. BlackBerry devices supported direct PIN-to-PIN messaging. If you knew the PIN of your recipient's BlackBerry, you could compose an email message using the PIN instead of the email address. Kind of like a friend code.

    I would love it if we could get some of that old tech working in the current day. It'd be easier to hold due to the bigger bezels and have all the ports that we need to connect it to anything, plus the front facing speakers. I'm betting that case wasn't official since it was disintegrating pleather, an all too common thing these days.
