In this week’s episode, I take you along on my recent Landscape Photography Road Trip throughout Oregon. Being selected as an instructor at the Out of Oregon Landscape Photography Conference was one of the top honors of my photography career and something I'm super excited about! The conference lasted four days and I decided to stay an extra three days afterwards for a bit of a landscape photography adventure. This was my first trip to Oregon and I’m already looking forward to returning again in the very near future.
In this video, I document my landscape photography road trip that started in southern Oregon and slowly moved northwards. During this photo road trip I get the opportunity to photograph incredible coastal sea stacks and some of the most vibrant autumn leave covered waterfalls that I've ever seen. I created some amazing friendships throughout my time in Oregon and I'm super excited to have this video as a sort of memoir documenting my time there.
I don't get the opportunity to go on photography road trips like this often, but it was nice to have the flexibility to just wander anywhere I wanted without any set schedule. And, what better state to do this in than the great state of Oregon. This landscape photography road trip is something that I'll never forget and I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it!
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.
Thanks for watching everyone!
-Mark D.

I'm partial to New England. Where else can you find varied places like mountains, small towns and oceanscapes and four distinct seasons so close together? There are other places that are great like Idaho but for variety close together, I like my home region of New England.
Keep up the great work Mark!
SeattleSlew77 Thanks so much!!
OK, great video production but you guys really need to name drop ~ what hotel in Eugene?
I live in Oregon and Mark you just brushed the highlights-- Central Oregon around Bend, the High desert areas--The Painted Hills, Columbia Gorge, Alvord Desert, the Steens Mountains, Willamette Valley, Crater Lake etc, make this a photographer's paradise. Come again and enjoy.
Michael Iles Indeed it certainly is a photographers playground!
And dont forget the Blue Mountains! Elkhorn range, Wallowa range, Strawberry range, the Ochocos.
Jackpot! My two favorite landscape photographers in one video.
I have always made all of the excuses in the book as to why I cant go out and try to take pictures; mostly out of fear, but you sir have inspired me. I take for granted all the cool spots I have available to me living on the Oregon coast, and my goal is to get out there and practice. Keep up what you're doing, I cannot stress enough as a young adult how influential your videos are to me!
reminds me of when I went to Idaho I stopped at a motel 6 in Reno and the beds reminded me of metal straps nailed to a wood frame. I got to Boise and for the same price I stayed in a place that had a king size bed, with a thick mattress and was very nice.
I’m so glad you got to see more of my home State. Loved that trail and the falls with color.
It was great hanging out with you again Mark! It was such a good week!
Pretty cool, I live a hour from Silver Falls State Park.. The summer is pretty dull, you went at the best time of year.
Really enjoyed this, your thinking in the field and process!
Great to hear - thanks for watching Paul!
great video!!! really looking forward to see those shots !!!
Miles To Vlog Much appreciated- thank you!
As always great content, lovely images , beautiful experience of watching you hike to the coast and making images in the midst of those rich fall colors. Mark, this was fabulous!
Anuja Sharma Thanks so much Anuja!
Liked the vlog. Gavin always makes me smile.
Thanks so much! Gavin's a super cool dude!
Loved this video. The autumn (fall) colours were amazing. I spent the morning at the beach today and the light was disappointing. This video reminded me that even the pros have the same problem. You can't control the weather. It's also good to know that despite the effort you guys go to, to only get 2-3 shots after several hours is normal. I know how satisfying it is when you just get 1. I would love to see the finished images some time!
Deborah Evans Yep, it’s amazing how much work goes into just getting that one great image! Next weeks video will be all about the photos captured and editing them👍
Mark...some great images and Gavin always comes through with his special brand of humor.
Brad Zaruba Thanks Brad! Agreed - such a good guy!
Ahhh Love Oregon what a beautiful place . I love shooting in inclement weather. The waves whipping the rocks I could sleep on the ledge where you were working. Just wouldn't want to wake up on the wrong side of the bed.
Would have loved to seen more of your still photos. But otherwise entertaining...thanks for sharing.
Loved this video!! PNW is a definate must on my photography travel list! The image from this trip you shared on IG is stunning!!
Christal Sigrid You’re the best - thanks so much Christal!
I am glad that you enjoyed our Silver Creek Falls. fall is a good time since the summer tourists are gone. And.... I from Silverton.
Now that's what I call fun! and what a location! Yup, you just keep getting better and better, and now hobnobbin' with the other top shooters! .oh oh...and teaching too! Wow!
Many thanks Steve - it was such a good week!
Really enjoy watching this video.
Many thanks Richard!
Nice video Mark. And good work keeping Gavin on a short leash. I have never been to Oregon or Wash. so need to plan that trip for the Fall color someday soon. Safe travels.
JR Long Thanks so much! It an amazing corner of the country for sure!
Great vlog Mark! Another place to add to my ever growing bucket list!...Juicy!!!!!! 😀👍
For sure! Got to check out that area!
I’m super glad you got to experience Silver Falls in the Autumn time! I’ve been pretty fortunate to live 20 min away and I always enjoy seeing others seeing it for the first time. Next time you need to do the Trail of Ten Falls there! I’m super excited to see the pictures you took from there 🙌🏼
Oh man I would love to live that close to Silver Falls - we had a great time there!
Another great video Mark! Gavin cracks me up! LOL. I wonder sometimes what kind of people give some video's a thumbs down, are they competition, jealous or what. I guess I'll never know unless they respond to this comment. As far as I could see there was absolutely nothing wrong this video.
Much appreciated Dennis - I have no idea either, I suppose you just can't make everyone happy.
Great as always looked an absolutely fantastic place look forward to the next one thank you
You've showed us great locations, looking forward to see the shots. On the camera display look cool already :-)
Thanks so much!
Wow, so much eye candy with those Autumn colours! 2 things we don't have in Australia......heaps of water and native autumn colour.....ooohh, maybe 3 things... that look on Gavin's face when he has found a juicilicious composition!
Haha! I know - hilarious!
Woaw thank you! Amazing bravo
Thanks so much - thank yoU for watching!
These vids are my favourite, just going out to a beautiful area and taking some pics and chitchatting. Can’t wait for the shitty virus to be gone so I can start doing this myself and also watch new vids like this
The best video in your channel. Awesome places. Beautiful locations. Nice water falls, streams ...
Wonderful. You are so lucky.
Enjoy.
Ravi Chandran Thanks so much Ravi - you’re the best!
Great video Mark, nice to see you out on the road again and the combination with Gavin was fun. Love the composition of the waterfall, tree to the left - looked great even on the camera. Thanks again.
Many thanks John! I'll be reviewing the photos in next weeks video, where you'll be able to get a closer look!
Now that is some STUNNING coastline and those waterfalls were spectacular made even more mystical with the brilliant Autumn colours in the trees 😍 I think the word "WOW" came out of your mouth MANY times 😃 Once again fantastic video Mark 👍 You and Gavin seemed to work perfectly together... Thanks again from Australia 🇦🇺
Thank ya Shane! Super glad to hear you enjoyed the video - it was such an amazing location!
Thanks Mark, I really enjoyed this video and as I can see you enjoyed that trip too.
Wow, beautiful location. Great video.
Susan Firth Thanks so much Susan!
This was a great one, Mark. Cool seeing you out on location with all the various Y7T guys (think I caught a glimpse of you in a Nick Page video too). Must have been a great time.
Thanks Karl - pumped you enjoyed it man! Nick and Gavin were both super cool fellas to be around - had a great time with em!
Great video.. really enjoyed it 👍
Get out and visit the McKenzie River area with Blue Pool, Sahlie Falls and Toketee Falls. Worth the visit to Oregon!
Planning and getting to the location and understanding the scene properly are essential skills....then explaining it while vlogging is what sets you on a legendary league, Sir! Awesome tips!
While you were vlogging on the Bandon Beach, behind you was a reflection of three seastacks and the light had a blue-purple-pink shade going on. I would love to have to shoot a long exposure there :D
Congratulations to Glen. His comment was really motivating! Dad and Son enjoying photography together.......that's what happiness truly means!
Thanks so much for this - super comment, which really means a lot!
Incredible video & what an experience for you!
Thanks Mom - such a great time!
Looks like you had a great trip. I enjoyed the video.
I sure did! Appreciate you watching David!
That's stunning.
Its Gavin! Amazing how we follow all of you guys...you, Gavin, Thomas, Nick, Adam, Mads, et al. Its like family! Ansel would be proud!
We just got back from Oregon. Portland, Newport, Netarts. Super glad you were able to journey out there. used all your teachings while shooting . Forever grateful brother!
Andre Houston Thanks Andre! Loved my time spent there and cannot wait to return!
Great video Mark, I look forward to seeing the finished images!
David Akoubian Thanks David! It was great getting to hang out with you in OR!
@@MarkDenneyPhoto likewise, as always it is great to see you. We need to meet up in the Smokys sometime.
Thanks Mark! Very inspiring video! I will be going to back to Fall Creek Falls next fall thanks to this video! Really enjoy your channel.
JL H Great to hear that you’re enjoying the channel!
Photogasmic
I'm moving to Oregon next year, and am super excited for easier access to great landscape photography destinations in the PNW. Can't wait to watch this video!
Micah Dickinson You’re so lucky - that area is insane!
@Jee Vang I'm not afraid of my homeless neighbors, don't mind paying my share of taxes, and am a political/cultural fit for the region.
I'm here to talk about photography and the beauty of nature, not to debate politics.
@Jee Vang I lived in PDX for 10 yrs (33 yrs ago), then had to moved back to TX against my wishes. There are "political issues and horrible drivers" everywhere you go. Regarding taxes, PDX has no sales tax, so that's a plus. I hope to get back there next year, finally! The homelessness issue really says more about our system than it does them, IMHO.
Oregon is the most photogenic state I've lived in, by a long shot. Also, great microbrews!
The PNW is one of the most beautiful parts of our country ☺️
That's how I felt when I left California for UT. Best decision I've made for my life and photography.
Whatta beauty...............
Paul Drevnytskyi Thanks Paul!
Great episode, would be nice to see some of your processed images. Can't believe Lardcastle had boots on ?..
Thanks Andy! I'm planning on making a video dedicated to processing my favorite images from the trip!
Boots are not appropriate footwear.
A superb video. Thanks
Great to hear that - thanks David!
So glad you were able to visit one of our candy shops so to speak here in the PNW and in the fall no less. Beautiful time of year to shoot the waterfalls. Congratulations on breaking 60k subscribers! It’s been great watching you grow your channel. Take care and keep on keeping on!
Thank ya Chuck! Really appreciate that friend!
Hi Mark. What a fantastic video ! Much prefer your vlogs when they're field based, particularly when the location is as beautiful as this. Keep 'em coming please Mark.
Tim Scanlan Many thanks Tim! Great to hear ya enjoyed it!
Brilliant mate 👏 really really enjoyed this as always. Keep it up 👍👍
Thanks so much Gavin - really appreciate it!
Great work Mark. You're getting up close to my neck of the woods. The PNW is second to nowhere especially in the fall with a little wet weather and foggy skies. Looks like you had fun. Congrats to your V6 winner. I like my set up and hope he enjoys his new tool. Cheers -Bud
Bud Betz Much appreciated- thank yoU!
Great video, very interesting to see the thinking process!! Hope we get to see some of your best images from the trip in the next video?!
Marie Micol Thanks so much Marie!
Hey Mark, great video as always. Great to see you taking photos in outdoor conditions. Would have been great to see your pictures after you took them, like Thomas Heston does. Already look forward to the one next week.
Gérald Zammit Thanks Gerald! I’m planning an image review/editing video on the images for next week👍
Great video Mark!
The colors look amazing. 😲
Thanks Mickey! Colors were insane!
I really liked photographing the coast of Oregon, Crater Lake , and the Columbia River Gorge. And I could get used to not pumping my own gas.
Haha! Yes, not having to pump your own gas is a nice bonus!
@@MarkDenneyPhoto Although it does feel a little weird just sitting there while someone else does the pumping. :)
Always happy to see people enjoy my home state. I only live about an hour and a half from Silver Falls, but I have a hard time convincing myself to go shooting there since it's so photographed. I should really get over that and look for more of the less expected compositions.
Robert Launder Oh I loved it there! You’re super lucky to live near so much beauty - I’m jealous!
I think we get desensitized, I'm shooting mushrooms this year.
This was awesome.
cwalter24 Thank yoU!
Great video Mark !
bio7021 Thanks so much!
The weather you saw was the craziest weather we have had here in the PNW since last November. Gotta come back in the summer time !!!
That's what I've heard! I'll certainly be back in the near future!
Great video. Love the locations! I’d like to hear just a tad more about your settings, lens choice, and thought process on each shot. And would love to see the video cut to even just a brief preview of the edited final.
Michael Duffy Thanks Michael! I’ll have a video out tomorrow discussing the images captured on this trip👍
Glad you enjoyed your time in Oregon. Silver falls park is pretty nice. Just North of there is Abiqua falls and Butte falls both very beautiful in the Fall and any time of year.Jeff in Oregon
We sure did! Can't wait to return!
Oregon is a great place for Landscape Photography. I've traversed the many landscapes west of Bend, Oregon a handful of times. Silver Falls State Park is the one area I often recommend people to see when they may only have a day or two in Oregon. The Columbia River Gorge, The Pacific Coast Highway and the Cascade Mountain Range have many wonderful Landscape opportunities to explore.
David Gilbert Such an incredible place David! I can’t wait to return.
Thanks for sharing this Mark. 3 areas on my list now that I live in Oregon (as of a couple weeks go.). South Oregon Coast, Bandon (Shore Acres State Park) and Silver Falls State Park. Very cool. Now I am all the more motivated to get to these places. May be too late for the autumn colors at Silver Falls. But the best time to photograph big waves on the Oregon Coast is in the Winter. So it is time to start planning my trips. Oh, and I had to laugh that so many of you from the conference are using the new Shimoda packs.
Glad to do it Dan - appreciate you watching it! Loved my time along the Oregon Coast and can't wait to return!
Great video Mark, bummer that I missed Silver Falls this year, some great color. Also a real treat to see Gavin sans flip-flops (being originally from Hawaii...we call them slippahs). I enjoy your channel! Mahalo.
John Woods Many thanks John! Great to hear ya enjoyed it. Mahalo friend!
Nice vlog mate👍🏻 nice to see you meeting up with Gavin
PhotoNinja Thank ya buddy! Glad you enjoyed it👍
I am glad that you enjoyed our falls. I am from Sillverton. Just FYI, the recent fires didn't get to the falls.
Very nice! I might have to arrange a trip to Oregon to visit my son that is studying in OSU and a photo expedition. Nice video indeed!
Great video at some beautiful locations. Nice to see you meet up with Gavin's sensible twin!!!
Thanks Gordon!
This was fabulous, Mark.
Thanks so much Jann - worked really hard on it, great to hear the positive response!
Cant wait to see the focus stacked composition final image 😃
Thanks Jimmy! I'll be reviewing the images in next weeks video.
@@MarkDenneyPhoto awesome! I did my first landscape focus stacked image following one of your how to videos. Thanks for the simplified and clear understanding of how to go about image stacking/layering to get tack sharp images 🙏 I tagged you in my image on IG. It's not epic but it's a start.
Fall can be really hit or miss on the Oregon Coast. I don't live too far from Silver Falls. I was there in the Spring but have not been there since. Can't wait to see your photos from your trip.
Don Dytewski Thanks Don - appreciate you watching the video!
Terrific video!
Drsef50 Thanks so much!!
You were here in my stomping grounds, so cool! Come on back any time, we have some awesome places in the PNW you should check out.
I can't wait to return - loved it there!
I love Oregon lived here like my whole life
I love it as well!
I need to get to the North West. That place looks insane! Great vid Mark
Thank ya Brett!
great video mark
Lewis Crawford Many thanks Lewis!
Wow! A fototripper cameo where he's actually wearing proper shoes. Oregon looks like an awesome photo playground. Rock on!
tjsinva 🤣 That’s a great way to describe it - photo paradise!
I just got back from being on vacation for 3 weeks, I click on your page to see what I have missed and I see Gavin in the thumbnail. I'm like, NO WAY! Probably the top 2 CZcams photographers I follow together in a video. I will admit that you 2 together is quite a contrasting pairing though. This would be like my photography lottery trip hanging with you guys and taking amazing pics.
travis branum Haha! Thanks Travis! It would have been great to have ya along as well!
Like Always great share!!! I live on the Florida coast so near water all the time and salt air! When near the surf (never gone in) but I always use clear trash bags on my sticks and use a 2 1/2 gallon ziploc bag, put the camera in and rubber band it around the lens, you can see everything on the camera. IF IF you want to change a lens just put everything in a clear trash bag. The last thing I want is salt air inside a $2K camera. I have been doing this since the 70's with film cameras, yes a few laughs by passers by but everything still works 50 years later even the old sticks! also have an old photographers vest and keep bags in back pockets also dark trash bags to cover boardwalk lights at night doing MW captures. That place in Oregon is great for MW's with the sea stacks, use Planit Pro tide section to see as a sine wave of the tides in the hour section way better than using a tide chart in a paper.
Good to see you shoot Silver Falls State Park...shot Kodachrome there back in the day and there were plenty of other falls there that you missed. And you must do Columbia Gorge...Multnomah Falls...next time you come out here.
Such a great park - just wish I had more time to explore there! So much to photograph!
I am going to travel to the Oregon coast next year, so many trips planned just to take pictures!
You're going to have an incredible time - such an awesome state!
Very enjoyable video Mark! Might be a slight bias as I’m an Oregonian and have photographed those areas over the years. Glad you enjoyed your time here and as you have found out, there’s a lot to take in and our weather is fickle as can be. Cheers!
Much appreciated John! I can't wait to return for some more photography fun!
Great video Mark, beautiful places for photos. Please show us the photos when you get home and details of the locations. Gavin?
Jim Bembinster Thanks so much Jim! I’m planning an image review/editing video next week to chat about my OR photos👍
Great meeting you at Out of Oregon.
Phillip Ziegler It was absolutely fantastic getting to spend some time with you Phillip! Hope our paths cross again in the future!
And now I want to go back out and photograph the fall scenery.
Me too - cant wait to return!
hey ya made it to the PNW how cool is that even if it is just Oregon. Washington has just as many wonderful places if not more lol hopefully one day you can make it out here again and really explore the PNW
Ohanzeetokala I hope to return very very soon!
Great video. I live how you shoot your photos. You live your 100-400 lens. Have you tried the Sigma 150-600 lens? It is a slower lens but I love the reach.
Was so stoked when I saw you on Nick Pages most recent vlog! Love it!
Many thanks Dan! Glad to hear ya enjoyed it!
They both share the same great content 😁👍
I’m so IN for the next time you’re out in the great PNW! Let me know. I’ve got some sweet spots I know you’ll appreciate. Haha
SETH!!!! Hey buddy - For sure!
Hey mark, really great video!!! The locations looked impressive and the pictures must have been a joy to watch! Where were the waterfalls located? I'd love to have the chance (when i get up there) to make the trip and take some pictures!
Thanks so much! This was at Silver Falls State Park.
Lol at the bed bugs...😂😂
Washington and Oregon are alike! Should take a trip to Long Beach, WA great pictures!
Oregon must see, The Gorge, Silver creek FALLS, Clear day just right you can get MUlti mountains. Mt hood, The fields of Red Clover i think it is clover LOL. And then other side of mt range you have a desert. Lava caves, China hat mt is near the Pumas rock desert. it is all that rock that floats in water. Then of course Goonies, Astoria with the long bridge and the Columbia River outlet into the ocean, Old fishing docks...... all a few hours drive from each other.
Awesome video
Thanks Sam - really appreciate that!
Nice to see someone else thinks shorter exposure for waterfall sometimes looks better. Usually people go nuts with exposure and the water is completely loosing its character. Looking forward to check out the images.
Yep, I usually like to have a little detail in my water images as well!
Man I wish we had Autumn colours in Australia like u do in the northern hemisphere. Could make an awesome video if we did.
Autumn is by far my favorite time of year!
I'm so glad you did this with Gavin. My Mount Rushmore of photography channels would be. Yours, Phototripper, Adam Gibbs, and Attilio Ruffo. (Thomas Heaton gets honorable mention)
Wes Wheeler Oh wow! That’s some incredible company - appreciate you including me in that👍
I have loved Oregon virtually my entire life, but I didn't finally get to move here until I was 48 years old. It truly is a photographers paradise, with beautiful and varied scenery everywhere. I live in the Portland area and do not get to Southern Oregon as much as I would like to. I was curious as o where you were in the first part of the video. Can you be more specific, other than one and a half hours South of Bandon? Thanks!
Congratulations to Glenn King!
This video was quality Mark, enjoyed it thoroughly.
It's nice to see Gavin and you collab, I don't know how there was no shenanigans in this, maybe it was the $75 room or the fact he actually had boots on and not flip flops that kept him grounded, lol. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we see your acting skills on Gavin's "show", lol. Looking forward to you first appearance 🤪😜
SOOooo, when are you coming to Canada? 😜😃
Hahaha! Thanks Will - pumped to hear ya enjoyed it! Hopefully sometime in the not so distant future!
@@MarkDenneyPhoto Oh you'll be seeing the Dennmeister in my videos ;)
