I was able to visit this wonderful exhibit recently. You MUST see in person. Bisa Butler is phenomenal!
Indeed, I have no words but phenomenal is a start! Wow.
When I heard this exhibition discussed on radio this morning, I had to find it online. I'm BLOWN AWAY by the sensational Bisa Butler and the products of her artistry. I've never seen anything like these wonderful portrait/quilts and am inspired to see if I could create something similar in crochet, no matter how clumsy the result. The ability to inspire is rare. Thank you, Bisa Butler.
Very, very, very illuminating. Liberating and ephemeral.
I am moved to tears. Bisa Butler's work is absolutely stunning.
ME TOO!!!
I was also, tears of joy, pride and love - this was one of, if not the best exhibitions. I wish it were here longer so I could have brought students to see themselves!!!!
This looks AMAZING. The detail - the person who said they could feel the spirt of the people is right on. I can see that even online. Stunning.
What a blessing Bisa is to the culture of her ancestors, my ancestors. As a new quilter, she has inspired me to create from a deep sense of purpose and love. I am in awh of her work and accomplishments and extremely excited for her growth in the time I have been following her. My birthday gift to myself this year is going to this exhibit which also happens to be in my favorite U.S. city.
I am so fortunate to have seen this incredible exhibit last month in Chicago. It was beautiful and so powerful. It was wonderful to hear Ms. Butler’s own words just now. Very moving.
Wow, so beautiful thank you for this beauty.
As a quilter myself I can share that her work is awesome and even more, that these quilts are in a gallery at the AIC- not just in the textile area, which has much less exposure, or in a less well known museum-
Wow absolutely breathtakingly beautiful!
Wow those are incredible. Go Chicago! Go Bisa!
"..into a daybreak that's wondrously clear I rise. Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave..." Maya Angelou ❣
Stunning. Wonderful to know the back story, too. Thank you.
Pictures are so real. Colors and shading is exquisite.

Amazing work and inspiration. Thank you for sharing.
Very impressive, Great Thanks (Очень выразительно, большое спасибо)
What incredibly sensitive, powerful work!
Stunning, brilliant work. Such an amazing art form! I would love to see this exhibit in person.
Thank you so much! I’m showing this to my great aunt, an old woman who makes quilts as works of art, too.
The differences between the two artists could not be more-yet each “found their own soul” as Bisa says here, and produced an item that you can hold in your arms, and it could keep you warm.
Bisa’s are more stunning, iconoclastic, unforgettable, I humbly submit.
Awesomeeeeee!! Beautifully done I'm very impressed,
I'm just watching the CBS article about you. There are artists, but for you to sew such beautiful photographs into quilt work pieces of such magnificence...Well as far as I know. You are atop the world in that arena...
Beautiful...just beautiful.
Absolutely so incredibly moving and beautiful. Bisa Butler, wow! I also felt the spirit of the people in your work. I feel forever changed by spending time with your art in Chicago a few days ago.
So much appreciation & respect for your talent & what you’ve created that I’m at a loss for words to adequately express. Just incredible! I must see this once we can get out again.
These are wonderful. So glad I found them.
Color & texture, sharp. I love the roses.
I was so lucky to see Bisa's show at my local Katonah Museum of Art. It was astonishing! Bisa is a portraitist first, Artist first, quilting is just the medium of her creative expression (and what an expression that is). xoxoxo LOVE you Bisa!!!
p.s. The Gordon Parks foundation is near to me as well, so fortunate for that as well!
My, oh my!!! Thank you, Sister!
I surely hope I can see this exhibit in person before it leaves Chicago.
