    This looks very practical and useful, and I think it's perfect for times when you have to sleep on the couch. The only thing I don't like about covering it that way is that you lose a lot of the aesthetic value of the piece. For example, my sofa is a Bellini sofa from Manhattan Home Design and one of the things I like the most about it is its tan leather upholstery, but anyway, in cold weather I usually cover it with blankets to try and make it cozier. I think I'll start doing it the way you do it. Thanks for the tutorial!

    Question: could the drop cloths be dried in a dryer with just air, no heat? I have a 1/2 size washer so I will have to go to a laundromat and the thought of lugging large wet material is daunting. BTW, I have heard that rinsing with vinegar added softens the drop cloths. ???

      I have also heard vinegar is a good fabric softener! I have only used it for towels but don’t see why it couldn’t work for the drop cloth as well.

      Hm for the seat area maybe a long dowel that you can tuck under the main back seam? That might help lock it in place. And then maybe do some small hand stitching on the sides to keep it in place? Or those small button snaps you can hand sew onto the sides. Not totally sure if that would work but just some ideas!

  • @sonshineandsong
    @sonshineandsong Před 2 lety +1

    Hello! I just love this video instruction. We spent a lot of money recovering our living room furniture and the upholsterer botched the job terribly. It pains me to look at it so I keep it covered. We also chose a rough fabric that bothers my skin. Just another reason to cover it. I have a crochet blanket stretched across the seat of the big couch, a fleece blanket across the sitting area of the recliner, and a messed up table cloth over the love seat. With accent pillows, the couch looks nice, but the love seat is a problem, always slipping off and not the best color. The recliner is okay. So I am very excited to do your method. I was trying to get my measurements and decided to check how you calculated yours. I think you made an error in the left to right measurement. You have over 13 ft for your couch but only used a 12 ft cloth? Something doesn't seem right about that. Anyways it's so nice to have found your video. Thanks for sharing.

      Rug grips will stop your throws & tablecloth from slipping off the sofa etc.😁

      @@sarahholland2600 thanks but I already ordered material to make new covers. The table cloth is a gold color and I really don't like it, plus I want the couch and love seat to match.

      Oh no I’m sorry to hear about the upholstery gone wrong! I hope my tutorial helps with giving them new life. I went back to check my measurements and you’re so right! The length from left to right is longer. Fortunately the front to back length had so much excess it was able to cover the couch completely. My method can be used as a guide, but every couch will be different so keep that in mind! Try to find a cloth that is close enough to your measurements. It might be a bit of a trial and error go, but so worth it for the lower cost. Best of luck to you and thank you for your comment!

      @@stephyoungren Thank you for your sympathy. Maybe I missed something in your video about using extra to make up the difference. I will be watching it over again once my material gets here. You are so kind to respond to my question. God bless you. ❤🙏

      It is certainly important that if you already have a super cheap couch you use an expensive fabric as a cover. Because otherwise it looks really depressing, everything cheap, cheaper, cheapest? Of course nowadays people rarely spent time in their apartments rather they live in their offices and only come home to take rest.

      It’s from rugs usa! I actually don’t have it anymore though. I found it hard to clean and it matted over time.

    Great vid! Will the pins damage the couch at all? x

    • @stephyoungren
      @stephyoungren  Před 2 lety

      It really depends on what material your couch is. Mine is a looser weave fabric so the pins go in nicely. But it you have say a leather sofa it would definitely puncture the material and leave a mark. I’d do a test run in a non conspicuous area first to see how your couch holds up. Hope that helps!

    How did you know how big of a drop cloth to buy?

      I added 2’ on each side and got the closest one to that dimension

      Hi Sheila, I linked the exact ones I used in the description box. They are called “upholstery pins” and look like a little corkscrew. Hope that helps!

    I was looking for a pet protector for my leather sofas, all the pet protectors are so ugly and doesn’t protect side from scratches, this is a way better solution, thanks for the fold ideas I don’t have to cut anything.

    How would I do this on a modern vintage couch that is higher in the center.

    • @stephyoungren
      @stephyoungren  Před 2 lety +1

      Hm I’ve never tried with a couch like that. It might need to be a trial and error go since it’s a different shape than what I’ve shown. Best of luck!

    • @stephyoungren
      @stephyoungren  Před 2 lety

      Definitely don’t use the pins! I’m not sure of another approach since I have a fabric sofa. Maybe look into Velcro or heavy duty double sided tape? Although those might leave a residue behind… anyone else have suggestions for Ann?

      I’ve seen safety pins used. Just have to pin the fabric together from the underside, setting the safety pins in the folds so you keep the shape of the wrapped area.

    • @stephyoungren
      @stephyoungren  Před rokem

      Id say to use one cloth per section and just tuck and pin the seam rather than going over the seam where they connect if that makes sense. Best of luck!
