Lesson Type: INTERMEDIATE. Another Bass guitar tuition video from Phil Ireland of Breaking Waves, watch & learn how to play this iconic bass run from this classic Paul Simon track!
+Robbi Kumalo Hi Robbi, Bakithi changed my life. I was 6 years old traveling across the USA the year Graceland came out and my mom had the tape playing in the car nearly the entire 8-day trip. That South African sound was like nothing I had ever heard in music and to this day, it is without question my favorite album. At the time, I didn't even know what a bass guitar was, I only knew that I loved that sound that was filling my ears, it was so unique, so different. I knew I wanted to make that sound, I wanted to know what it was. A few years later, I saw the video of Paul Simon's 1987 concert in Zimbabwe and that's when I saw Bakithi for the first time, with sunglasses, a headband and that fretless of his. Then I saw him play that same solo that's on this video. I remember thinking that was the coolest musician I'd ever seen to be able to do that. I remember thinking "I want to be that guy!" I didn't want to be a guitar player, a singer, a drummer or anything else, I want to be what Bakithi was. That was it, the day I decided to play bass. It took many more years but my mom finally bought me a second hand bass and I started my own great journey with the instrument. I've now been playing for over 20 years, the bass has been a gift that has filled my life with happiness, it has taken me to many wonderful places. My favorite lines to play are the ones your husband wrote. Several years ago, I was at the NAMM convention and I saw that Bakithi would be there to endorse U-Bass but I missed him. I am still bummed I did't get the chance to thank him. Robbi, I am a bass player because of your husband, he is my #1 influence and I cannot imagine my life without that. He is very much loved by so many of us! Would you please thank him on my behalf? All the best to you! -Evan
Robbi Kumalo Robbi, Thank you! I know that was a lot of words for me to write but I never thought I would get the chance to thank Bakithi. It's truly something I've wanted to do for some time now. God Bless you as well Robbi! - Evan
So I've played bass for some years now but never got onto slapping, but after 5 days of practice I finally have the solo up to speed. Thanks for the lesson
Thanks Phil. I've been trying to work this out from an inaccurate transcription and it was driving me nuts. Thank you for showing me how it's actually done :-)

Thanks man, need to learn this for an 80's gig.
It's kind of funny to see Paul SImon pretend to play the slap solo part in the music video.

I've hated for years . Now I can nearly play it , I love you.
Btw is it all triplets? Rest on first then ghosties yeah?
16th notes (semiquavers), a rest on the first note of each beat should give you a better feel, (rest) E & A (rest) E & A etc.
be sure to know hes playing the open strings aswell
wow Warwick
nice hair phil
